To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES KEMr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovem'ents in Locks, of
' which the following is a speciiication.
My improvements relate to locks of the character set forth in my concurrent application Serial No. 258,701, filed Oct. 18, 1918, in which a rotatable hasp cylinder is adapted for engagement with the jamb staple or equivalent stationary securing* means, the object being to attain a Simp e but strong and durable 'burglar proof lock of few parts, in which the operative mechanism is pro-- tected and concealed in locked positionf-my present linvention consisting in the specific construction and arrangement of parts herein described and claimed. v

The casing for the operative parts consists of the base plate B, which is screwed to the door D, or other closure to be protected, and
inner side of the cover C, which is screwed to the base' plate B, after the latter is secured to the door D. b, b, Fig. 8, represent the holes in the base plate B, for the screws by which said plate is secured to the door D; and b', b', the female threaded posts which receive the screws by which the cover C, is secured to said base plate B.
The cover C, is formed with a semi-cylindrical recess c, for the accommodation of the hasp cylinder H, the ends of which latter are formed each with a radial recess k, (Fig. 12 for enga-gement with trunnion bosses c (Fig. 3) on the cover C.
rllhe hasp cylinder H, is essentially hollow in 'that it is formed with the longitudinal recess 7L', and lateral slots h2, opening thereinto for the accommodation of the arms s, s, and cross bar s', of the staple S, as will be understood by reference more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 7, of the drawings.
The staple S, is protuberant from an angular base plate S', which is secured to and countersunk in the vjamb J, of a door frame or the like as indicated in Figs. 2 and 7,-the lock as before intimated being secured by its base plate B, to the door or other closure D, and it is secured thereto insuch manner that the end of the casing in which the hasp cylinder H, is mounted will overlap the staple S, and its plate s when the door or other closure is turned to closed position. It is to i be noted in this connection that edge bx, of the base plate B, at this end of the lock terminates short of the edge c, of this end of the cover C, so as to leave an opening in the lock Casin through which the staple S, may project w en the hasp cylinder H, is in proper position to receive said staple.
The peripheral surface of the medial portion h3, of the hasp cylinder H, between the opening it', and lateral slots h2, h2, is formed with gear teeth h4, for engagement with Vrack teeth r, formed for the purpose `on the adjacent outer end r', of the rack bolt R. The rear portion of the latter is formed with lateral bearing arms r2, r2, which rest against the inner side walls of the cover C, as shown particularly in Fig. 1; while the forward medial portion of said rack bolt R, is supported in a recess 02, provided for it in a standard c3, forming part of the cover C, as shown more particularly in Fig. 6, the recess being closed by a cap strap c4. This method of supporting the rack bolt R, insures the proper alinement thereof, and prerack bolt R.

The rear portion of the rack bolt R, is slotted to straddle the cover post 05,being formed with parallel edges r3, r3, Which contact Vwith said posthc5, so that the latter also acts as a guide and lateral support for the The rear of the slot in said rack bolt R, is enlarged to accommodate the bolt actuating cam arms 7c, Z, of the key arbor K, and latch spindle L.
The key arbor K, and the latch spindle L, are positioned in axial alinement, but are not connected .avith each other in any manner, the latch spindle L, being journaled on the body plate of .the cover C, While the key arbor K, is journaled on the base plate B, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2.
Pivotally supported on a trunnion r4, on the face of the rack bolt R, next the base plate B, is a spring paivl P, formed with a lateral bearing extension or tongue p', (shown in Fi 13) which protrudes through vthe recess r, formed for it in the rack bolt R, and into the path of action of the aforesaidboltmactuating cam arms 7c, Z, of the key arbor K, and latch spindle L. The pavvl spring` 7J, tends constantly to thrust the paivl P, into the position shown in Fig. 14, with the side Walls of its notch 292, in engagement With the stationary post c5, thereby locking the rack bolt in retracted position and against longitudinal movement in either direction, asshown in F ig. 111. The pawl P, is also formed with a shoulder p, for engagement vWith said post c5, if the paWl is released by the withdrawing of the cam arm la, when the bolt R, is in the forward position as in Fig. 1&1, thereby locking said bolt against retractile movement until the paivl is again depressed. i
When either of the bolt-actuating cam arms Ze, or Z, are turned in the right direction outof normal position, thereby contacting with the bearing tongue 10', ofthe Spring paWl P, thelatter is depressed so as'to release it from engagement with said fixed post c5, (see Fig. l) freeing the rack bolt R, when the continued ymovement of the cam arm (7c or Z) by'reason of the engagement of its free end with the side Walls of the recess rs, thro-Ws the rack bolt R, forward, 'causing it to rotate the hasp cylinder H, and secure the staple S, if in positiontherefor.

Furthermore all the operative vparts of the locking mechanism are inclosed and isolated when connection is -niade-'With ,the staple; and the parts are simple, inexpensive and not liable toy `(ilera-ngement under ordinary con ditions of use. l
It `Will be seen that the distinctive feature of my present invention as compared With my concurrent application for Patent Serial4 No. 258,701, hereinbefore referred to consists in the combination with the rotatable haspV cylinder H, of the rack bolt R, formed With the slot r, and recess T5, and provided With the spring .paWl P, formed with the notch p2 and deten't p3, in conjunction with 'the key arbor K, formed with the cam arm Zt', 100 and the latch .spindle L, formed With the cam arm Z, for the purpose and operating in the manner set forth.
What Il claim as my invention and desire to secure fby Letters` Patent is,-
1. 4. The combination with a jamb staple or equivalent stationary securing means, of a lock comprising a rotatable hasp cylinder adapted to embrace and engage with saidy staple, said cylinder being formed with peripheral teeth, a rack bolt formed with teeth engaging said cylinder teeth and with a recess, a key arbor having a cam arm engageable with said recess, alatch spindle having an arm also engageable in said recess, a spring pawl having a shoulder, means for engagement therewith for withdrawing the cam arm of the key arbor, and means for depressing said pawl to disengage it from said means to free the rack bolt.
5. The combination with a jamb staple or equivalent stationary securing means, of a lock comprisinlr a rotatable hasp cylinder adapted to em race and engage with said staple, said cylinder being formed with peripheral teeth, a rack bolt formed with teeth engaging said cylinder teeth and with a recess, a key arbor having a cam arm engageable with said recess, a latch spindle having an arm also engageable in said recess, a spring pawl having a shoulder, means for engagement therewith for withdrawing the cam arm of the key arbor, means for depressing said pawl to disengage it from said means to free the rack bolt, and means whereby when the rack bolt is shot to locking position a double locking is effected.
