Specification of LettrsPatent. Patented Ap a-8,1919.
Original application and December 2,191 Serial No. 134,714. Divided and this application filed *June i5;
1917. -"Seria1No. 175,008. I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THADDEUS -S. GR-IMEs,
of Columbus, in the county of Muscogee and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vGrinning-Ribs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it'appertainsjto make and use the "same. i
I have found in ginning that lint will accumulate from the underside of the ribs and gather between and around the ribs at the ends of the ginning spaces, that -=is,;where the ribs are attached to the ribrail. This causes a choking in'the ginning'spaees be tween the ribs and retards the eflfective action of the saws. Myobject is to overcome this difficulty.
Figure 1 shows the general design of the rib and Figs. 2 and 8 are detail perspectives showing its attachment to the rail.
.The rib 1 is shown secured at its' lower end to a rail 2, its upper end being supported by a rail 3 which will be understood to be intended for use adjacent a ginning The arrangement and operation of the ribs may be as shown and "described in Letters Patent No. 1,244,196, issued on my application October 23, 1917,0f. which this case 1s a division.
The rail 3 is-forn'led with a strip a at its edge adjacent the saw cylinder, that is, at
the point of engagement of the ribs. s Each rib is formed with a lug 5 -to bear against the front face of the rail and is rabbetedto receive the strip 4; The extremities 6 ofthe ribs are rigidly secured to the rail,
The ribs have recesses 7 extendingtoward their ends 6 from points just. over strip 4, the oppositely disposed recesses-coacting to form widened slots at the meeting edges'of adjacent ribs. At their points ofcontact close contacti j 4 It will be understoodv that the main porthe recessed portions constitute channels permitting of the ready united at the rear of said strip.
with the inner edge Sof the strip,"hoW Y I, j
and rearward therefrom; the ribs are 1n tions of the rib arelsujfigienflyspaced. to
permitrthe' gin saws to rotate throughthem. V j
. I so otthe point 9 at which the ribs c'loselyconj tact with each other.- This renders it impos- It'will be noted that the strip 4; is in advance sible for the lint to be pulled throughjthe joint between the" ribs. It is prevented from doing so by the stripf The slots formed by release ofthecotton partially pulled through- I by the "saws and enablesth is cotton to get back into the roll boxy I claim as myinvention:v '1. The combination with a pair of ginnin said rail having a strip at its forward edge, said ribs extendin'gover being spaced apart in advance of, said strip and beingclosely ribs, of a rail to which said ribs are secure 2. The combination with a pair of ginning i ribs, ofa rail to which said ribs are secured, said ra1l hav ng a strip at ts forward edge,
. said ribs having recesses formedin their adv ace'nt surfaces, at a polnti above SELld StIlP I and extending rearward thereof.
3. The combination with a'pair of ginnin .ribs,.ofya rail tog-which. said" ribs are secure said rail having-"a strip at its forward edge, I
said ribs having lugs bearing against the front; ofsai'dsrail andbeing cut away t0"i'eceive said strip, the adjacent faces of said j ;1 s01 w said strip and having shoulders at the rear ribs being spaced apart over and in front of edge of. said strip in-c1ose contact withthe Y latter and with each other. k j I i timony whereof I have signed this specification.

It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 1,300,162, granted April 8, 1919, upon the application of Thaddeus S. Grimes, of Columbus, Georgia, for an improvement in Grinning-Ribs, an-error appears in the printed specification requiring correction as follows: Line 65, claim 1, after the Word over insert a comma and the Word and; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
Signed and sealed this 29th day of April, A. D., 1919. I
