K awue/ntoz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR. G. WEE, F TOMAHA'WK, WISCONSIN.
LIITING-JAGK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR G. WEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tomahawk, in the county of Lincoln and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings' wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the movable member.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a cross section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1, showing the means for detachably connect ing the base to the ratchet bar.
Fig. 6 is a detail view.
As shown in these viewsthe device consists of the upright or ratchet bar 1 having the ratchet teeth 2 thereon. This bar has its 'lower end seated in the socket 3 in the base member 1 and said bar is removably held in said socket by means of the spring controlled latch 5 having its pointed end engaging with a hole 6 in said bar. By this means the base may be detached when the device is to be used as a wire stretcher or whenever desired. As will be seen from the drawings the ratchet Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Application filed May 29, 1918. Serial No; 231292.
bar is of I-shape so as to provide a recess 7 on each side thereof.
The movable member 8 is provided with the guides 9, one on each side portion, for engaging the recesses 7 so as to prevent the movable member from having a rocking movement on the ratchet bar and thus cause the wearing of the ratchet teeth by said teeth commg in contact with a part of the movable member. 10 is the operating handle pivoted 1n the movable member and provided with the pair of dogs 11 for engaging the ratchet teeth, said dogs being pivoted in the handle, and spring controlled as usual. Each dog is rovided with a laterally extending lug 12 which is adapted to be engaged by a cam member 13 plvoted on the pivotal pin of the handle. This cam member is provided with a cam art 14 for engaging with the lug on the holding dog and-a double cam part 15 for engaging with the lug on the lifting dog. The part 14 is formed by a substantially U shape recess in one side of the member at'the center thereof while the part 15 is formed of a double curve adjacent the end of said member. This cam member is operated by means of the plate 16 pivoted to one of the side parts of the movable member and having a lug 17 thereon engagingwith a cam opening 18 in the cam member. This plate has an extension 19 which passes through an arc-shaped slot 20 formed in one of the side parts so that the said plate may be actuated from the exterior of the movable member. A spring 21 holds the cam member in its two positions with the dogs in lifting position and in lowering position.
When the extension on the plate is moved to one end of the slot the dogs are moved to a position where they will raise the movable part on the ratchet bar when the handle is operated. When the extension is moved-to the other end of the slot the dogs are so positioned that the movable member will be lowered when the handle is operated. In this position of the dogs and when there is no load on the jack the handle may be raised to its highest position to throw both dogs out of engagement with the teeth so that the movable member may be lowered quickly. As before stated the guides operating in the recesses or grooves will prevent any side play of the movable member and thus protect the ratchet teeth from wear. 7
22 is the handle member bolted tothe top is carried by of the ratchet bar. This handle member is.
.provided with a groove 23 ad'acent one edge of the bar in which is remova 1y secured one part 24 of abolt cutter. The other part 25 5 of this bolt cutter is removably secured in the movable member so that when the member is raised the cuttin edges of said parts will coincide to cut a olt. P1pe clamping aws 26 are removably secured to said mov- 10 able member and the handle member adjacent the oppositeor ratchet edge of the ratchet bar. 27 indicates one member of a wire stretcher carried bythe handle member while the other member 28 of the stretcher the movable member. These wire stretching devices may be made in any suitable manner.
It is thoughtfrom the foregoing'description that the advantages and novel features 10 of my invention will be readily apparent.
at I may I desire it to be understood 1:
make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
' What I claim is A lifting jack comprising a ratchet bar having ratchet teeth thereon, a movable member embracing said bar, a handle pivoted in said movable member, a pair of dogs carried by said handle and engaging the teeth, a lug on each dog, a cam member having a sub- .stantially Ushaped recess in its side engag- OSCARG.
