Elpecifieation of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. d, infill.
Application filed May 27, 1920. Serial No. 3%,706.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that AMnnioUs C. ll lILLs, din, deceased, at the time oi his death a citizen of the United States, and resident oi? Rochester, in the county of Monroe ant lltate oi New York, had invented certain new and useful Improvements in Easels, oi which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to easels and has for an object to provide a construction which is inexpensive to manufacture and is of simple form. A. further object of the invention is to provide an case]. which may be made from sheet material and which will effectively hold a card or other article against accidental. displacement therefrom.
To these and other ends the invention con sists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view at the easel with the two members thereof lying in one plane;
Fig. 2 shows the easel'in side elevation;
lFig. 3 shows the easel in front elevation with a card supported thereon; and
' Fig. 4i shows the easel from the top.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 and 2 indicate two members forming the easel and in this instance made from a single piece of sheet material scored at 33 to provide a hinge connection between the two members. Each of these members is provided with a resting edge in this instance at right angles to the hinge 3. Each memher also has a supporting portion 5 formed by one edge of the sheet material at an angle other than the right angle to the hinge connection 3 for engagement with the card or other article 6 supported on the easel. lllach member Further has two overhanging and oppositely extending projections 7 under which the card 6 received at its upper and lower edges, these projections lying in the plane of the member by which they are carried and acting to bind against the front face oi? the card in the manner shown in Fig. 3 when the t vo members oi? the easel are at angles to each other, thus preventing the removal of the card. To remove the card (ithe members 1. and 53 are moved into parallelism on their common hinge 3, thus permitting the card to be withdrawn in the direction of its plane. When the material is scored as shown in the present embodiment. the members i and 2 tend naturally to separate to produce the binding engagement with the card. it is apparent however, that the invention is not limited to making the two members 1 and 3 from one piece of material nor to the illustrated manner of forming the hinged connection between the members. I t is apparent also that the invention is not limited to making the members from sheet material, although this has been found to be the least expensive construction.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a simple and inex- 7 pensive construction which will etlectivelv secure a card or other article against accidental displacement. A. constructirm is provided which will readily adapt itself to manufacture from a single piece o'l aardboard.
Nhat l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. An easel comprising two members hinged together and each having a support 111g portion against which. the baclr of a tlat article may rest, and oppositely extending projections at the ends of said portions having overhanging portions for binding against the an article as the 8 nont face of members swing outward on their hinges to confine the article on said supporting portions the projections at the lower end oi: each member being farther removed from. the hinge than that at the upper end of each member so that the article occupies an inclined position on the support.
2. All easel comprising two members hinged together and formed from sheet material, each member having a supportiwr edge at an angle to the hinge against whicav the back oi. a flat article may rest, and each member also having at the ends of its supporting edge, oppositely ex inding overhanging projections for binding against the front taco of an article resting against said supporting edges as the members swing outwardly on their hinge, thus confining the ar ticle on the supporting or s against free movement thereon. the proect ns at the lower end of each member being farther moved from the hinge than that at the upper end oi? such member so that the article occupies an inclined position on the suppmrt.
