Description
F. THUMAN.
GAS PRODUCER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE I3. 1917.
1,398,609, Patented Nov. 29, 1921.
FREDERIC THUIEAII, OF LQN'DQN, ENGLAND.
GAS-PRQDUCER.
Application filed June 13,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
vBe it known that I, Fnnonnrc THUMAN, a citizen of the United States, and residing in London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Producers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas producers,
and especially to water-gas producers, of the kind inwhich the ashes and clinker are mechanically removed from the base of the producer by the well known means of a ro--. tatingbase-plate upon which is mounted a grate that. projects into the fuel' bed and servesas an ash crusher. In such gas pro ducers the ashes are generally raked from off the base-plate or scooped out of the ash- .pan by a fixed or traveling rake or scoop.
In as producers of this kind serious dam age 0 en arises from the overheating of the grate, usually caused by allowing the hot zone of combustion to descend to the level of the grate, and it has been proposed to cool some such grates by water circulation, water v of the grate inlet and outlet pipes being provided. This danger from overheating is particularly liable to occur in water-gas generators equipped with rotating grates of the above description, owing to the high temperature at which the process makes it necessary to maintain the fuel bed. I
Now according to this invention a rotating grate, which serves as an ash crusher and also as an air and steam twyer, is provided with water inlet and outlet pipes carried by the grate and coaxial therewith where they are coupled to inlet and outlet mains, the said pipes being connected to passages through which the water circulates and cools the grate or such part of it as are liable to become overheated, so that the risk of damage is reduced and the temperature kept below that at which clinker is liable to form on it.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures- 1 and 2 show respectivelxliii plan and sec- Specificaticn of Letters Eatent. Patgntefl N 29 1921 1917. Serial no. 174,482.
of spur gearing g, and shaft 71, which passes through the side of the ash chamber by the packed gland e' and is driven in any suitable manner.
Upon the base-plate is mounted the grate which is formed with water-circulating channels If, and with openings Z for the distribution of air and steam to the lire. De pending centrally from the upper part of the grate is a straight pipe m, that is also connected to the hollow cylindrical portion of the grate by a branch m and surround' ing the pipe m and attached thereto just below the grate is a pipe at which is connected to the two sections of the grate by a branch 1 and extends through a stufiing box 0 that is fixed to the wall of the ash chamber and has its gland 0 formed as a. junction box with two compartments, the
pipe at terminating in the upper one and the pipe'm extending into the lower compartment.
The cooling-water is brought under pressure through an inlet main 9 into the lower compartment and passes thence through the plpe m rotating with the grate into the pas sages 70 While the effluent water is taken from the passages a of the grate by the pipe n, which incloses the pipe m and passes intov the upper compartment of the gland or junction box 0 and thence through an outlet main 1", the discharge end of which is above the level of the grate. The pipe n is pro-- tected from contact with the hot ash in the chamber '0 by a tubularextension ofthe stuffing box 0. i
The ash rake s is adjustable from the exterior of the producer. The ash falling into the hopper c is periodically removed by the attendant.
' The air blast to the generator is supplied through the valve controlled inlet t, .and the steam by the pipe to and sprayer '0.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature ofmy said invention and in, what manner the same is to be per-' sages arranged in series and provided in the grate instep wise arrangement and having a .Water inlet and a Water outlet, water inlet }and outlet mains, and water inlet and outlet pipes connected with the water inlet and outlet of the passages and carried by the provided with an ash crusher and a twyer,
closed Water circulating passages arranged in series and in step wlse arrangement and provided in the grate and having a Water inlet and a Water outlet, Water inlet and 10 outlet mains outside of the generator, Water inlet and outlet pipes connected with the inlet and outlet of the passages and With said mains and carried co-axially of the grate and extending through the Wall of the generator, and a tubular covering arranged through the Wall of the generator for protecting the pipes from contact With hot ashes, substantially as described.
