Be it known that I, WALTER I. MURBHY, a citizen of the'United States, residing at New York in the county of New Yorkand State of ew. York, have invented certain new and useful 'Improvements in Corruated'Sheet-Metal Car Ends, of which the ollowing isa specification. u
My invention relates to a sheet metal end structure for :railway cars, more particularly for box cars, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a ycar end structure composed of one or more metal sheets, preferably of a plurality of. sheets, overlapped and secured together, said sheet or sheets formed with vertically disposed strengthening and rigidifying corrugations or projections so diSPOSBd as to afford a maximum reinforcement midway between vthe side walls of the car.
In a vertically corrugated sheet metal car end the corrugations serve as bea-ms to transmit any cargothrust to the car framing, and also, to a certain extent, as posts to carry the roof load. Both stresses are likely to be greatest near the vertical center line of the end. The rtions of the end structure adjacent the side walls of the car are rigidified and strengthened by the corner posts and therefore do not require the reinforcement provided by the corrugations to the extent, at least, that the middle portion requires such reinforcement. In vaccordance with my present invention the middle portioniof the end is formed with corrugations or ribs of maximum depth while the side portions of the structure are provided with corrugations of lesser depth. In order to facilitate the fabrication of the end structure it is made up of a plurality of sheets, each sheet having corrugations of the same depth but the corrugations of the middle sheet being deeper than those of the sheets on opposite sides thereof.
A further object is to provide a sheet metal end structure composed of a vertically corrugated end sheet or sheetsoccupying the middle portion of the end and flat metal sheets at the extreme sides of th-e end structure.
The invention consists 'of the new and improved constructions, arrangements and devices shown in the drawing hereto 'attached and to be hereinafter described and claimed for carrying ont the above stated objects and such other incidental objects as will be hereinafter referred t0.

The end structure is composed, in this embodiment of the invention, 'of seven sheets or strips of metal designated 15, 16, 16, 17, 17 and 18, 18 which are overlapped on vertical lines and joined together by means of rivets 19,. The low-,er edges of 'the sheets are inturned to provide flanges 20 which are secured to the end sill by bolts 21 or other suitable fastening devices. In'this preferred -forno ofthe invention the sheets 18, 18 at the sides of the end structure are fiat, that 1s to say, are not corrugated and are formed on the outer vertical edges with flanges 22 secured to ,the corner4 postsv 11 by bolts 23. The sheets 17, 17 are formed with vertically disposed .corrugations 24 which are relatively shallow. The plates 16, 16 are `formed with deeper'` corrugations 25 and the center plate 15 is formed with still deeper corrugations 26. The corrugations of each sheet are of the same cross sectional configuration.
The upper edges of the sheets are preferably bent over inwardly on lines corresponding to the slope of the car roof to provide anges'27, 28, 28, 2929 and 30, 30, these flanges being secured together by rivets 31 to constitute a rigid member or structure which widens toward the side walls of the car Jfor supporting the ridge pole 13 and purlins l and for giving rigidity to the upper portion of the -end Wall panel, this flange structure, inlefl'ect, taking the place of the usual end plate of the car. T heflanges 30 are secured to the side plates 12 by means of angle brackets 32.

I claim:
1. A sheet metal end structure Afor a-rail- Way car, comprising an end panel formed with a relatively deep vertical corrugation adjacent the vertical center line of the end and formed With a shallower vertical corrugation on either side of the same, said structure being provided at-the top With inturned flanges'to support the roof of the car and at the bottom With inturned flanges for attachment to the under frame of the car.
2. A sheet metal end structure for a rail- Way car comprising a plurality of sheets secured together and formed with relatively deep vertical corrugations adjacent the vertical centerline of the end, and'With shalloWer vertical corrugations on either side" of the same, said structure being provided at the top with inturned flanges to support the roof of the car.
3. A sheet metal end structure for' a railway car comprising a plurality of sheets of metal joined to each other along vertical lines, the side sheets being flat and the center sheet corrugated.

A sheet metal end structure for a rail- Way car comprising a central sheet and side sheets overlapping on vertical lines and secured to each other Aand to the frame o f the car, said sheets being formed with vertical corrugations, uniform for each such sheet, those of the central sheet being deeper than` those of the side sheets.
7.*A sheet metal end structure 'for a rail- Way car comprising a plurality of s heets,
overlapped on vertical lines and secured together and to the frame of the car, and formed with a plurality of vertical corrugations which terminate Within the edges of the sheet and extend substantially from the floor to the roof of the car, and which are deepest at the center portion and shallower adjacent the opposite edges of said structure, said sheets being formed along their upper edges With inturned flanges to rigidify the upper vmargins thereof to support the roof of the car.

A sheet metal end structure for a rail- Way car composed of a plurality of end' sheets overlapped and secured together along vertical lines, the center sheet being formed with corrugations1 of maximum depth, the sheets adjacent thereto With corrugations of lesser depth and the sheets at the extreme sides of the end being flat, the upper and lower edges of said sheets being bent inwardly to provide for attachment of the end to the frame members of the car.
23. A sheet metal end Wall panel for a railway car provided With a plurality of groups of vertically disposed rigidifying projections, the projections of each group being of substantially equal size and the groups of projections arranged so as to give the center portion lof the p'anel greater strength and rigidity than the side portions thereof.
