Be it known that I, JosnrH VINCENT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Fresno, in the county of Fresno and the State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a washing machine, having for its object the easy and thorough washing of clothes by means which will not tear or mutilate the fabric being washed. I accomplish these objects by means of the device hereinafter described and illustrated on the accompanying drawings which are hereby made a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an end view of the washing machine complete. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the swinging members used in the washer. Fig. 4 is an under view of the float.

In said drawing B is the outside form of the box or tub which is preferably rectangular in shape, having sides B and B the bottom B and the top or cover 13. The inside of the box is corrugated on its bottom, such corrugations being indicated on the drawing as 25. C and C are a pair of swinging members pivoted near the lower inside corners of the box B so that they can be swung toward the center line of the box B and so the water will be thoroughly agitated. To accomplish this readily I have formed each of these swinging members with a back 4 having a plurality of perforations 5. and inside corrugations an L extension 6 on the bottom with a pivot member 7 at each end thereof, and an extension 8 on the top. The extensions 6 and 8 are set at an obtuse angle to the back 4 as shown. At each end of the box B I have formed sockets 7 into which pivotal extensions 7 will fit. 9 is a weight attached to the back and near the top of swinging members C and C 10 is a strip the thickness of pivots 7 used for the purpose of preventing the clothes or fabric from being drawn under the hinge formed by socket 7 and pivot 7. 6= and 8 are brace strips for strengthening extensions 6 and 8.

11 is a float which consists of a corrugated base 11 and a weight on the top 11". This float has a plurality of holes 5 there through. The weight ll should not be so heavy that float 11 will sink. 14 is an inside flange in box 13 near the top. D is a block on stand D which is supported by legs D F are springs which rest on the block D and which carry box B 011 the top. It will be noted that by filling the box with water or suds approximately to the flange 14, then placing float 11 on the top of the clothes with the corrugated side downward, by rocking the box the float 11 will move back and forth over the top of the clothes thus giving them the same character of treatment they would receive if rubbed lightly on a wash board, and the swinging member C and C will also have a movement back and forth with the water, and a. portion of the water will go through the perforations. This movement of the water and gentle agitation of the clothes over the corrugated surface is effectual in thoroughly cleansing the clothes and imparting a rocking motion to the box through the spring F and is accomplished with a minimum effort. The box can be rocked by hand means, a handle G being shown for that purpose, or it can be done by foot, a depending pedal E being shown for that purpose. E is a weight on pedal E to give the rocking motion momentum. Other means for imparting this motion not shown may be used.

Inasmuch as better results are accomplished by using hot water, I have attached a small derrick to stand D for the purpose of lifting the float out of the tub. This derrick consists of an upright fulcrum 20, at the top of which is pivoted a lever 21, having a balancing weight 22 at one end and a suspended book 23 at the other end. 23 is n eye into which hook 23 can be inserted to raise it out of the box. 23 is a rod connecting hook 23 with lever 21.

I claim as new and ask for Letters Patent upon:
