IGNITENG- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22, 1921.
Application filed-January 7, 1921. Serial No. 435,6?7.
To @ZZ whom. tf/may concern.' I
lie it 1inimvn that l, EDWARD JUnnowsKr, a-citiaen ot Poland, residing at Baltimore, in the county t Baltimore City and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful improvements in lkgy'nitinp)` Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to' certain new and usei'nl improvements in igniting devices and is particularly designed tor the ignition of jas lights employed tor the lighting of cigars, cigarettes, etc., although capable ot general application.
rllhe principal object oit' the invention is to provide a. device of this character which shall be extremely simple and durable in construction as well as eilicient in operation and capable of being cheaply and easily manutactured as well as placed into use.
Another object ot the invention is to provide an igniting device tor `.gas burners, making use of. operating` mechanism including lazy tongs. with yieloable means to normally maintain laf/.y tongs collapsed with the ioniter per se ot the device lowered at one side ot the burner, and means tor manually extending the lazy tongs so as to elevate and laterally move the igniter per se and to immediately instantaneously actuate the latter when thelasy tongs have been fully en tended with the in'niter por se directly above the outlet ot the burner.
A. 'further object ot the invention is to provide an improved igniter construction and coper tive mechanism upon lazy tongs Vwhereby the device is normally in a lowered inoperative -position and whereby, when the igniter is raised to an operative position, the igniter' per se will be actuated, the cooperative connections betweenthe lazy tongs and the igniter 72er se including a trip device and means for automatically resetting the trip device when the igniter per s@ is lowered.
Other objects will become apparent as the nature ot the invention is better understood, and the saine consists oi'i the novel form, combination and arrangement ot parts herematter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
Y In the drawings, wherein like reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure l is a side elevational view of a gas burner equipped with an igniting` device constructed' in accordance with the present invention, with the igniter ver se inits normal or lowered inoperative position,
F 1g. 2 is a top plan view ot the device shown in Fig. 1, Y
Fig'. 3 is a rear elevational view thereof,
Fig. 1lis a `detail View oi' the igniter per se, partly in top plan and partly in horizontal section,
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. l with the igniter per se in its raised position ust prior to release of the trip,
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view showing the upper portion ot the device shown inFig. 5, after release ot the trip,
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the pivoted igniter member,
Fig. 8 is a similar view of the Hint carrying-link,
Fig. 9 is a similar view of the trip `operating' catch for the pivoted member shown in Fig. 7,
llig. l0 is a similar view of the trip carrying link which releases the catch of Fig'. 9, and
Fig. l1 is a similar view of the milled or rough steel member which is carried by the pivoted member of Fig. Z and which is yield- -ingly engaged by the liint carried by the member .shown in Fin". 8.
Referring more in detail to the several views, the igniting device ot the present invention is herein shown, for the sake `ot illustration, as operativelv associated with a gas burner tip 5 provided on the outlet end ot' a gas supply pipe 6, the burner 5 beingformed with an integral miner 7 removably carried by a sleeve 8 which is threaded onto the pipe 6 in the usual manner. The present invention embodies an angular supporting strip 9, the horizontal end ot which is apertured so as to be slid onto the upper end ot the pipe 6, where it is secured in place betweenl the shoulder l0 ot said pipe 6 and the lower Vend ot the sleeve 8 which is threaded thereon.
The vertical end portion ot the angular supporting member 9 is provided with a longitudinal elongated slot il which is engaged by a guide pin l2 carried by one of the links ot the lazy tongs 13 whereby rectilinear movement of the parts is insured, and whereby lateral swinging movement oi the lazy tongs is prevented which would otherwise occur as will be apparent. The lazy tongs is connected with the vertical member ot the sup-- port 9 by means of a pivotpin le which passes through the two lowermost crossed links and which is rigidly supported by saioL support 9, the pivot pin 14 being` in line with the .slot 11 and immediately below theV latter. V'lfhe pin 14 is or" such length as to receive the coils of the axial tensioned spring 15,V and the extreme ends of this spring are bent to engage beneath the lower edges of said lowermost crossed links of the As shown in i 1.0i. 8 one of the u ermostV n x n n s. a .links of tne lazy tongs 13 is made consider- ,ably longer than Vthe rest, this link being designated by the numeral 17, and the upper end portion of this link is bent upon itself to extend laterally as at 1.8 toward the burner tip 5. The link is then bent at right angles as at 19, 20 and 21 to provide a substantially rectangular portion forming a flintfholder. ^ilined openings 22'are providedthrough the rectangular flint holder, andthe flint element 23 is secured in a sleeve 24 which extends through one of the openings 22 and which is removably carried upon the inner!v end ofl an adjusting screw 25 which is threaded into the other opening 22.
Still another pair of openings 26 is provided through the flint holder, and a pivotpin 27 is rigidly Secured in said openings, the pin 27 being of such length as to project through the dint holder for a short distance where it has a pivot member 28`mounted thereon, a spring 29 being interposedbetween the pivoted member 28 and a head 30 on the end of the pin 27, whereby the member 28 is yieldingly urged toward the flint holder. One end of' the pivot member 28 is formed into U-shape as at 31, and a roughened wedge-shaped plate of steel 32 or the like is forced tightly into this Eill-shaped portion 31. whereby the roughened surface of the steel 32'is presented in contact with the end face of the flint element 23, the spring 29 keeping constant yielding contact at this point. Another axial spring 33 is provided upon the pin 27 between the apertured portions of the flint holder, and one end of this spring- 33 is bent at 34 to engage the end ofthe pivoted member 28 at one side of the pin 27, while the other end of said spring 33 is bent as at 35 to engagethe adjacent end of the flint holder at the opposite side of pin 27. The spring 33 thus normally holds the member 28 substantially parallel with the apertured sides of the flnt holder, the bent end 34 of the spring 33 being arranged to engage the lateral portion 18 for limiting the upward tilting movement of the member 28 at that. side of the pin 27. The rough plate 32 is notched as at 36 to embrace a portion of the rectangular end 31 orn the member 28 to insure againstV longitudinal displacement of' the plate 32 from said U-shaped end.
rThe other upperVV link of the lazy tongs is Vconsiderably shorter than the first and is indicated at 37, the same being pivoted at its central portion to the longer link 17 and being stamped and bent adjacent its inner end to provide a pivot stud 38 to which one end of' a catch 39 is pivoted, the other end of said catch being` notched as at 40 to be engaged by the lateral leg 41 of a tong 42 which is provided upon the end ofthe pivoted. meinber 28 opposite that which is formed with the U-sliaped portion31. The end portion of the tong 42 is disposed in spaced relation to and parallel with another leg 43 on this end of the pivoted member 28, and the upper end of the catch 39 is bent at right angles as at 44 to engage the leg 43 and act as a stop for the member 28when said catch 39 is released. A lug 45 extends laterally from the free end portion of the leg 43, and a comparatively weak arial spring 46 is secured upon this lug 45 with one end bearing upon the leg 43-and its other end engaging the adjacent edge of tl e catch 39, whereby the latter is normally forced in forwardly swung position to cause engagement between the lateral portion 41 and the upper wall of' the notch 40. rlhe link 37 is provided with an end lug` 47 uponits outer or upper Vend arranged to engage the front edge ofl to rapidly wipe the roughened face of theV plate 32 across the end of the flint element 23, thus causing a spark directly above the burner tip 5. In actual practice, the downward movement of the plate 32 across the face of the flint element 23 causes the sparks to be projected directly onto the burner tip and insures ignition of the gas at the latter. As the flint element wears away, this wear is automatically taken up to a great extent by Jthe springl 29, and additional `adjustment can be obtained by screwing the'member 25 inwardly. As soon as the'spark has been obtained, the vhandles 16 are released, and the parts returned to their normal position as shown in Fig. 1.
