Be it known that I, HARRY. S. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of .Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and uselful Improvements in a Convertible-Car Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention constructions.- The general object of the invention is to relates to convertible car provide a car of the Hart convertible type `horizontal position to form part of the flat :door ofthe dump car, or swungfupwardly to an inclined position, in which case the doors form an extended wall of the central hopper.
In this particularaspect, therefore, the invention comprises a car having the stationary central longitudinal hopper portion rwith the swinging doors mounted along the upper outer edges of the hopper portion, which doors in one position form extensions of the hopper sides. ln this embodiment of the invention the hopper sides are com- 35 pleted by inwardly and upwardly swinging portions which in one position form a portion of the sides of the car.
The invention is illustrated on the accomlpanying sheets of'drawings, in which,--

Referring to the figures of the drawings, it will be understood that I have shown a convertible'car having sides including stakes thereof',y Longitudinal. sills 12 Yare mounted over and rest upon the cross beams 11.` The body of the car includes a central stationary longitudinal hopper 13 formed by an inclinedstationary side wall 14: and an iiiclined movable wall in the form of a door 15 whereby the load may be center dumped. When the car is used as a flat bottom car the central hopper 13 is covered. In this particular case the central hopper 13 is covered partially by members 16 which, when the car isarranged as a hopper car, rare used as hopper end walls spaced from the regular car end walls 17, as shown in dotted lines lin Fig. 2. The remaining portion of the hopper 13 at each endis covered by a movably mounted member 26,-which when the car is used as a hopper car is moved over upon the floor end portion 27 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.`
.The flat floor adjacent the central hopper 13 is formed by longitudinally extending doors 1S which are pivotally mounted at 19 along their inner edges or along the upyper outer edges of that portion of the hopper below the floorlevel. As shownat the `left hand side of the Fig. 1, the ioor ,door

.which position it is'located when 'the car is used as a fiat bottomcar.v The door 18 in this horizontal position, normally is arrested from an upward movement by a side chord 28located along the floor line, there being one at each side of the car acting as stops.
.In this connection it will 1oe noted thatthe doors 18, at their outer ends, are Vprovided with a hinged portion 18a-which must be folded over the door before the latter can .be elevated above a' horizontal position.
When the car is arranged as a flat bottom c ar, the side doors 20 are in a vertical position engaging the side, stakes 10, the car `sides also including stationary portions 21 located above the doors 20. When thecar is arranged as a flat bottom car the load may be dumped tothe sides thereof by dropping the doors 18, said doors being provided with suitable operating mechanisin including a chain or 'cable 22 `and operating shaft 23- carried bythe side of the car,V said cable preferably passing through guide castings 24: carried ,by the vside wall doors 20.
When it is desired to change the car from a fiat bottom car to a central hopper car the same is done by shifting the car side.`

It will be understood also that the temporary hopper iioor portionsl and 26 willbe moved from their full line positions shown in Fig. 2 to f their dotted line positions shown inthe same figure. -Heretofore with the central `hopper arrangement no provision has been made to dump a portion of the load to theisides of the car. However, by means of my im'- proved door arrangement the doors 18 may be 'lowered from their inclined position in which they form hopper sides to positions wherein ka portion `of the load .will be dumped to the sides of the car. If desired, the central hopper door 15 may be opened at the same time for center dumping. Y
It is my intention to cover all modifications falling within .the spirit and scope of the following claims.

In a car of the class described, al central longitudinally disposed stationary hopper portion, chords arranged at the sides of the car along Vthe Hoor line thereof, 'and doors hinged along theupper outer edges of said hopper portion arranged to take an inclinedposition to form a hopper side wall and to take a horizontal position orforming a portion of the floor, said doors having upwardly folding hinged portions! which normally engage the said chordsy to prevent upward movement of the doors beyond a vhorizontal position, said hinged portions being movable into a positionto permit Vmovement upwardly beyond said chords.

A car .of the class described including a body havingmovable side portions and movable floor portions Which respectively occupy vertical and horizontal positions when the car is arranged as a Hat bottom car and Which take an inclined position to form a hopper side Wall when the car is arranged as a hopper car, means for supporting the movable side portion in inclined position, and means associated With said side Wall door for supporting the movable floor portion in said inclined position, and said floor portion being movable for side dumping from an inclined hopper position and from a horizontal position.
