Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
AUGUSTUS S. AEMSTENG, oE NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT lN COTTON-BALE TIEMS.`
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,754, dated June 10, 1873; application filed May 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS SAMUEL.
ARMSTRONG, of the city of N ew Orleans, parish of'Orleans and State of Louisiana,.have invented a new, useful, and 4Improved Balelie; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in whichl Figure 1 shows one form of the device; Fig. 2, another form, being only a slight moditlcation of that Shown in Fig. 1, while Fig. 3 Shows the tie constructed in either of the above forms, and as connected with the ends of the metal bands which are to be employed in connection therewith.
My improvement, as will readily be understood, relates to a simple, economical, easilyconstructed, and at the same time an efficient device, by means of which the ends of metallic bands surrounding bales of cotton, hemp, rags, moss, hay, or other materials usually packed in bales, are connected or fastened after the said materials have been subjected to pressure.
Mylouckle or tie is constructed by folding in a peculiar and novel manner short pieces or cuttings7 of metal bands, which are similar, as to materials, to that which is employed for the band itself. For the construction of mybuckle or tie 'a piece of metal band of about eleven or twelve inches' in length is re- A quired, which is folded, as shown in Figs. l
and 2, so as to form the openings or links A and B, respectively, into the former of which one end of the metal band, of the kind in general use, is inserted and folded down before the same is employed upon the bale or package to which the same is to be applied. After the bale or package has been subjected to pressure, the metal bands to be employed in connection with my device are passed around the said bale, so as to bring the end thereof, upon which the buckle is permanently secured, through under the bale, and between it and the operator, who is to connect the opposite end of the said band with the said buckle, whereupon the said opera-tor with his left hand takes hold of the said buckle, and with his right hand slips the said opposite end of the said metal band through the opening B in its front or face side, and then folds the said opposite end of the said band upward toward the bale, so as to make a loop or oblate hook, and the connection or fastening is complete. l
with the form of dev-ice shown in Eig. 2, l
opening thereby created, and turned at an i angle of several degrees to the central line of the buckle, the same may be slipped back upon and `over the point of the end of the buckle which is upon the inside of the said opening', whereby the two ends of the Said buckle which overlap each other are securely held together, and4 the band can by no possibility slip from the opening'- into which it is inserted,
no matter to what extent the bale upon which4 they are placed maybe subjected to rough handling. .y
Having described my invention, its construction, and mode of application in practice, i
The buckle or bale-tie herein shown and described, for the purposes specified.`
A. STARMSTRONG.
