Be it known that l, NATHAN GUnnwrTsoH, a citizen of `Russia, and a resident of YWeidling, near Klosterneuburg, Austria, have 1nvented a new and Improved Button-Fastener, of which the following is a description.

My invention relates to button fastening mea-ns and particularly to a detachable fastener having a button head provided with a shank to be engaged by the fastener means or disengaged as may be desired.

The general object of the invention is to provide a novel fastening means that will securely hold the button in fastened position and whereby convenience is promoted in the attaching or detaching of the button.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciiication, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example oi the invention.

.ln carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, the button head 10 maybe of any suitable shape or design and formed with a shank 11 having aneye 12 therein. ln the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the shank 11 is rigid whereas in Fig. 3 the button head, which may be a military button, is provided with a shank 11a connected with the head by a hall and socket connection as indicated at 13.

The fastening means comprises a Vfront disk or plate 14 and a rear cover plate 15 therefor, between which a fastener spring is disposed as will appear. The plates 14, 15 are secured together at their peripheral edges as indicated at 16.

rlhe plate 11i is formed or provided with a centrally disposed thickened portion orY block 17 in which is a longitudinal slot 18 extending from the edges of the plate across the center. lnV association with said thickened portion 17 is a fastener spring 19 formed of a length of wire returned on itself f into approximately U-forin. @ne arm 20of the spring lies in the slot 18 and has longitudinal movement therein 'to engage ordisengage the eye 12 of shank 11 when said shank is projected rearwardly through' a central oblong hole 14a in the plate 14. rlhe other arm of the fastener spring 19 has an arched portion 21 terminating at its free end in a laterally directed dog 21LL which is adapted to engage either one of two notches 22, 22n formed in the adjacent side edge of the block 17. rEhe spring 19 projects through an opening provided by a cut-out 14h in the plate 14 and a corresponding cut-out 15b in the rear cover plate 15 to be grasped between the thumb and linger for sliding the spring longitudinally. The resiliency of the spring 17 holds the dog 21a in the notch 22 when the spring lies in the inner. position with the arm 20 passing through the shank 12 and in the outer position of said spring 19 the dog 21a engages in the second notch 22 to Vhold the spring against displacement. Adjacent to the rear notch 22a a lateral protuberance 28 is formed on the side edge of the thickened portion 17 to limit the outward movement of the spring 19 to prevent its complete separation from the plates 14, 15.

l would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, l do not limit myselfl strictly to the rexact details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be Vconsiderably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appendedv claims.

Having thus described my invention, 1 y

claim:

1. A fastener adapted to engage the shank of a button-head, said fastener comprising front and rear plates, one of which is formed with a longitudinal slot between the plates and with a pair of notches at a side of said slot, and a spring bent into approximately U-shape, one arm of the spring having guided movement in said slot to be moved across the center, 'the front plate having a hole intersectingl said slot for the protrusion of the shank of the head to bring the eye of the shank into line with said spring arm, the other arm ot said spring having an arched portion terminating in alaterally directed dog, said spring being accessible at the peripheries ci the plates to be grasped and being slidable to engage or disengage the shank of a button head, and to engage its dog with either' of said notches.`

Means for fastening a button head having a shank formed with an eye, said fastening meanscomprising an element having a hole for the entrance of the shanlnand a spring slidable in a plane approximately parallel'with said element at the rear side thereofand having guided movement thereon, said spring being formed With a dog, and said element having a pair of notches with `either one of which the spring may be engaged in its fastening position or in position disengaged from Vthe shank.

3. Means for fastening a button head having ashank formed With an eye, said fastening means comprising a front plate and a cover plate presenting cut-outs, a spring approximately U-shaped and movable longitudinally between said plates and accessible at said cut-outs, one of said plates havinga pair of notches, and a stop protuber ance adjacent to one notch, said springhavv ing a dog adapted to engage in either of said notches, said protuberance being in line With the dog to prevent complete separation 'thereof fromk the plates.
