Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Non-Flooding Attachments for Kerosene- Gas-Generating Apparatus; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in nonfiooding attachments for kerosene burners, or kerosene gas generating and burning apparatus; and in particular is designed for use with the kerosene gas generating and burning apparatus shown in patents to A. A. ltusteberg, dated November 4, 1919, #1320928, and to L. F. Bertrau, dated November 4:, 1919, #1,320,973, and my application for patent filed October 11, 1919, Serial Number 330,061.
One object of the present invention is-to prevent the back pressure chamber from being flooded with raw oil, in case the generating coil is not hot enough. One of the most serious troubles with the aforesaid apparatus, especially when operated by parties unfamiliar with their manipulation, is that if the oil is turned on too suddenly and before the generator is hot enough it will run into the back pressure chamber, and then it is difficult or impossible to start the burner until such oil is burnedout of said chamber. New users cometiines fail to get the generator started at all on this account and this frequently necessitates sending some one from the shop or manufactory to rectify this trouble.
Another object is to regulate the amount of gas admitted into the back pressure chamber. In the aforesaid apparatus no adjustable means was provided to vary and regulate the amount of gas flowing to the back pressure chamber, and while the gas openings and passages were intended to be made'in proper proportion, yet sometimes the generator becomes overheated; and in such cases it is very desirable to reduce the flow of gas to the back pressure chamber.
The present invention consists more particularly in a means for preventing flooding of the back pressure chamber, and means for regulating the supply of gas thereto; and h ewe reer eg aw g i str t one certain new and useful practical embodiment of the invention, which will hereinafter be described; and the essentials-of the inventionand novel features of construction and combination of parts are summarized in the claims.

The invention is illustrated as' applied to an apparatus such as shown in my aforesaid application. Such apparatus comprises a hollow casting 2, whose interior forms a back pressure chamber O, and said casting is provided at bottom with a laterally projecting hollow extension 2 which communicates with chamber O, and has an'opening in its top which is connected with the mixing tube by a pipe 1 as hereinafter explained. 1
Surrounding this casting 2 and back pressure chamber O is a generating coil or retort 1, which is heated by gas escaping from the back pressure chamber through aper tures in 2 in the wall thereof. Oil is supplied to the lower end of generating coil by any suitable means, preferably as described in my said application, and the gas escapes from the upper end of the coil through a small aperture in a head ortip 1 connected therewith. I
The gas issues horizontally from the aperture in the jet head into the open end of a mixing tube t; and air enters such tube adjacent the jet-head and mixes with the gas in traversing the mixing tube. This mixing tube is preferably connected by a short vertically disposed tube. 14; with the opening in the extension 2 of the back pressure chamber. From the mixing tube the gaseous mixtures are conducted by a pipe 6 to the point of utilization, such as a rivet heating furnace 5, as in my application aforesaid; but obviously the gases may be directed to any desired point of or means for utilization thereof.
Sei e ga wi l p s fro -the, suit ng ub through pipe 14 and into the back pressure chamber C, and escape through the apertures 2 and being ignited on the outside of the back pressure chamber will heat the generating coil 1, and convert the oil therein into gas.
As thus far described the apparatus is sub stantially the same as shown in my aforesaid application.
In the burners shown in the said patents and application there is a T in the mixing tube which has an opening in itsbottom for the escape of gas into the back pressure chamber, but any raw oil forced out of the gas jet head into the mixing tube runs into this T and down into the back pressure chamber flooding the latter and preventing operation of the apparatus until such oil is removed or burned out.
In the present invention in place oi": such a T I employ a novel fitting which in the construction illustrated approximately resembles a T with an exterior hollow collar and valve chamber and also effectively prevents flooding of the back pressure chamber and also enables the supply of gases'to the back pressure chamber to be nicely regulated as desired.
As shown the novel fitting has a horizontally disposed tubular part 4? which is internally threaded at its opposite ends for engagement with the sections 4 and 43 of the mixing tube. Part 4? has an opening 4* in its upper side for the escape of gas into a passage 4 which is formed in the wall of the fitting and extends partly around part 4 and communicates with a T portion a which depends below part 4 and at rightangles thereto, and has its lower end internally threaded for engagement with the upper end of tube 14, but has no direct con nection with the interior part .4 except through said passage.
In my improvement the opening 4* for the gas is in the top of the part 4* instead of the bottom, hence it is impossible for any raw oil to drain into the chamber C. If any raw oil should flow into the mixing tube, it can only pass on into the furnace 5 where it can do no harm, and will be quickly burnt out, and will not stop or retard the operation of the burner in the least.
In order to regulate the amount of gas which may pass from the mixing tube into the back pressure chamber, I preferably provide the fitting with a valve to vary the size of the opening 4* and control the flow of the gas through this opening.
As shown, a valve 4 is slidably mounted in a chamber 4 formed in the fitting at the upper side of part 4, and this valve may be adjusted by its stem 4* (as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. so as to regulate the amount of gas passing from the mixing tube into the back: pressure chamber. The outer end of the valve chamber 4 may be closed by a screw cap 4 and the valve stem may be packed as indicated at 4 The particular construction of this valve is not material, provided it is so constructed that by adjusting it the amount or" gas passing through the opening d can be regulated so as to keep the generating coil at that temperature which will give best results.
The invention, when understood, will be appreciated by those familiar with kerosene gas generating apparatus and burners and is not restricted to the particular constructicn shown herein, as the particular physical embodiment may be varied within the scope of the invention, to suit the particular design or construction of burner or generator to which the invention is to be applied.
VV hat I claim is:
1. In apparatus of the character specified, a fitting adapted to be connected with a mixing tube having an opening for the escape of gas located above the bottom of the tube so as to permit oil'to pass through the tube and prevent passing out of said opening, and means for regulating the size of said opening.
2. In'combination with a mixing tube and a generator having a back pressure chamher; an opening in the side of the mixing tube above its bottom connected with the back pressure chamber to permit oil to pass through the tube and prevent oil passing into said back pressure chamber. 7
3. In combination with a mixing tube and a generator having a back pressure chamber; an opening in the side 01 the mixing tube above its bottom connected with the back pressure chamber to permit oil to pass through the tube and prevent oil passing into said back pressure chamber; with means for regulating the size of said opening, substantially as described.

In combination with a mixing tube and a generator having a back pressure chamber; a non-flooding fitting connected with the generating tube and having an opening in its side above the bottom of the mixing tube and a gas passage connected with this opening, said passage connecting with the back pressure chamber to. supply gas for heating the generating tube, and said open ing permitting liquid to pass through the mixing tube and preventing liquid entering the gas passage, and means for regulating the size of said opening.
6. A fitting for the purpose specified comprising a tubular portion adapted to be connected with a mixing tube and having an opening in its side for the escape of gas, located above the bottom of the mixing tube so as to prevent oil escaping therethrough by gravity while permitting oil to flow through the mixing tube past the opening,
and a gas passage in the fitting connected with said opening; with a valve connected with said fitting for regulating the escape of gas through said opening.
7. A fitting for the purpose specified comprising a tubular portion adapted to be con nected with a mixing tube and having an opening in its side for the escape of gas, located above the bottom of: the mixing tube so as to prevent oil escaping therethrough by gravity while permitting oil to flow through the mixing tube past the opening, and a gas passage in the fitting connected with said opening; said fitting also having a valve chamber adjacent the opening, and a valve in said chamber adapted to regulate the size of said opening, substantially as described.
S. A non-flooding attachment for mixing tubes of oil burning apparatus comprising a fitting having a tubular portion adapted to be connected with and form part of the mixing tube, said portion having an opening in its side for the escape of gas located above the bottom of the mixing tube so as to prevent oil escaping therethrough by gravity while permitting oil to flow through the mixing tube past the opening, a T portion on the side of said fitting, and a passage in the fitting connected with said opening at one end and with the T at its other end, substantially as described.
9. A non-flooding attachment for mixing tubes of oil burning apparatus comprising a fitting having a tubular portion adapted to be connected with and form part of the mixing tube, said portion having an opening in its side for the escape of gas located above the bottom of the mixing tube so as to prevent oil escaping therethrough by gravity while permitting oil to fiow through the mixing tube past the opening, a T portion on the side of said fitting, and a passage in the fitting connected with said opening at one end and with the T at its other end; said fitting also having a valve chamber adjacent the opening, and a valve in said chamber adapted to regulate the size of said opening, substantially as described.
10. A fitting having an axial passage for fluid, and an opening in the side of the fitting above the bottom of the passage for the escape of gas; with means for regulating the size of said opening; substantially as and ,tor the purpose specified.
11. In apparatus of the character specified, a tubular fitting adapted to be connected with a tube so as to permit passage of fluid therethrough, and having an opening for the escape of gas located above the bottom of the tube to prevent fluid passing through the tube escaping through said opening; and means for regulating the size of said opening.
12. A fitting having a tubular portion for the passage of fiuid and an opening in its side for escape of gas, said openin being located above the bottom of the tubular portion so as to prevent fluid escaping therethrough by gravity, and a gas passage in the fitting connected with said opening; with a valve connected with said fitting for regulating the escape of gas through said opening, substantially as described.
18. A fitting having a tubular portion for the passage of fiuid, an opening in its side for the escape of gas located above the bottom of the tubular portion so as to prevent fluid escaping therethroughby gravity,.a gas passage in the side of the fitting connected with said opening; and a valve chamber adjacent the opening, with a valve in said chamber adapted to regulate the size of said opening, substantially as described.
14:. A fitting for the purpose specified comprising a tubular portion adapted to be connected with a mixing tube and having an opening in its side for the escape of gas, located above the bottom of the mixing tube so as to prevent oil escaping therethrough by gravity while permitting oil to flow through the mixing tube past the opening, and a gas passage formed in the wall of the tubular portion and connected at one end with said opening and extending partly around the tubular portion, substantially as described.
15. A non-flooding fitting having a passage for liquid, an opening in its side above the bottom of the liquid passage, for the escape of gas, and a gas passage formed in the wall of the fitting and connected at one end with said opening and extending around the fitting to the side opposite the opening, substantially as described.
16. A fitting having a tubular portion for passage of liquid and an opening in its side for the escape of gas located above the bottom of the tubular portion so as to prevent liquid escaping therethrough by gravity, and a gas passage formed in the wall of the tubular portion and connected at one end with said opening and extending around the tubular portion to the opposite side thereot and opening thereat; and means for regulating the size of the said opening, substantially as described.
