To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW B. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baldwin, in the county of St. Croix and State ot lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-`Jar Cover Removers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventiomsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
My invention provides a simple and highly efficient so-called fruit jar cover remover, which is especially designed and particularly adapted for quickly and easily removing the covers of fruit `j ars of the type generally known as Mason `jars, and which covers are applied to the glass `jars by coarse screw-threaded engagement. This device is also equally well-ada`pted for tightly screwing the covers on the jar.
(nrenerally stated, the invention consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

The numeral 10 indicates a clamping head formed with a flat stem 11 at its outer end and with a clamping segment 12 at its inner rlie clamping head 10 fits. loosely in the crotch afforded by inwardly diverging or outwardy converging arms 5 of the main yoke, and the flanged inner edge of the head 10 is formed on the arc of the circle of the segment 6 and like the latter, is provided with teeth or sharp edge ridges 13.
The stem 11 of the head 10 slides freely through the space between the upper and lower ears of the arm terminals 8, and the pivot pin 9 is passed through a slot 14 in said stem. Near the inner extremity of the slot 14, the head 10 is provided with a camengaging lug 15.
The numeral 16 indicates a cam lever which is placed adjacent to and on top of the stem 1l, works between-the same and the upper ear or' the head 8` and is pivoted on the pivot pin 9. -The short end of this lever 16 is formed on a curved line that is eccentric to the axis of the pivot and is arranged to engage directly with the lug 15 of the clampingl head 10.
The projecting end ci:V the stem 11 affords an extension to the arm formed of the outwardly converging portion of the main yoke. When the lever 16 is turned to the position shown in Fig. 1, the clamping head 1() will be Ifree for outward movement into such position that the device can be readily applied to or removed from the jar cover. When the lever 16 is moved into a position parallel to, or approximately parallel to the stem 11, the cam end oi said lever, active on the lug 1 5, will force the clamping head inward and cause the teeth 7 and 13 to so tightly clamp against or bite upon the cover Y), that the latter may be turned with great force either for the purpose of removal from or application to the jar. Then the lever 16 is approximately paral lel to the stem 11, the two@ may be held together' by one hand and by the same hand used as a lever extension to the converging portion of the yoke, thus affording a lever' of such length that a jar cover can be removed even when verytightly stuck to the jar, and moreover this can be accomplished without damage to the cover and without danger of breaking the jar.
` By reference particularly to Fig. 2, it will be noted that the teeth 7 and 13 are not on the arc of the cylinder, but follow a conical surface that has a downward flare. gives the proper arrangement for full engagement of the teeth with the downwardly flaring cover b and increases the range of adjustment for application of covers of different size.
What I claim is:
1. A cover remover comprising a rigid yoke-like body, having an internally toothed segment and an extended crotch, a clampinghead working in the crotch of said yoke with its stem projecting through the same andhaving at its inner edge a toothed Segment, and a lever pivotally connected to the crotch of said yoke and operating on said clamping head to force the same inward.
2. A cover remover comprising a rigid yoke-like body, having an internally toothed segment and an extended crotch, a clamping head working in the crotch of saidyoke with its stem projecting through the same and having at its inner edge a toothed segment, a lever working adjacent to the stem of said clamping head, pivotally connected to the crotch forming portion of said yoke and having a cam acting end operative on said head to force the same inward.
3. A cover remover comprising a yokelike body, having an internally toothed segment and an extended crotch, a clamping head working in the crotch of said yoke with its stem projecting through the same and having at its inner edge a toothed segment, and a lever pivotally connected to the crotch of Said yoke and operating on said clamping head to force the same inward,
the teeth on said yoke and clamping head being disposed around a downwardly tapering imaginary conical surface.
4. A cover remover comprising a yokelike body, having an internally toothed segment and an extended crotch, a clamping head working in the crotch of said yoke with its stem projecting through the same and having at its inner edge a toothed segment. the crotch forming portion of said yoke having vertically spaced ears, a pivot pin extended through said ears, the stem of said clamping head having a slot through which the stem pivot pin is passed, said clamping head having a shoulder near the inner extremity of said slot, a clamping lever pivoted upon said pin, working between the ears of said yoke and having a cam acting end engageable with the shoulder of said clamping head to force the same inward.
5. A cover remover comprising a rigid yoke-like body formed with a segmental cover-engaging portion and an extended crotch, a clamping head working in the crotch of said yoke and having a stem projecting through the same and a lever pivotally connected to the crotch formation of. said yoke and operating on said clamping head to force the same inward.
G. A jar cover device having in combination a rigid closed yoke member having :1n arcuate serrated portion at one end of its inner side, a concave segment disposed in its other end and having a stem projecting therefrom, a lever pivoted to said yoke member having one end bearing against said segment to move the same toward the serrated portion of said yoke.
