T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS M. HARRIGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Voodstock, in the county of lVindsor and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bundle-Tape-Applying Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a device for applying adhesive tape to bundles and packages of different kinds.

The object of the invention is to provide a compact, inexpensive device for the purpose of applying tape to bundles, packages and the like and for cutting off the tape so applied from a roll of tape. The novelty of the invention resides in utilizing the roll of tape itself to roll the portion of the tape which is being applied to the bundle against the surface of the bundle to which the tape is being affixed.

The invention further consists in moistening the adhesive material on one side of the tape prior to its being afiixed to the bundle and also in providing ameans which not only may be used to moisten the adhesive material on the tape, but may also be utilized to moisten the surface of the paper on the bundle to which the tape is being applied in line with, and in advance of, said tape.

Furthermore the device contemplates providing a cutter which can be utilized to sever the tape after it has been applied to the bundle.

Another feature of novelty embodied in the invention consists in utilizing a handle, whereby the roll for applying the tape is manipulated, as a container for water which is conducted to the moistening roll.

The-invention consists in the combination of elements set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims whereby the objects hereinbefore set forth may be realized.

Referring to the drawings:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved bundle tape applying device.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section viewed from the left of Fig. 1.

In the drawings, 5' is a roll of adhesive paper'tape which is rotatably mounted upon used to hold the end a shaft 6. The shaft 6 is fast to a carrier frame 7 whichl consists of two side pieces 8 and 9. These side pieces are joined together by the shaft 6, pins 10 and 11 and cross bars 12 and 18. The pin 10 serves as an axis for a felt moistening roll 14; to rotate upon and the pin 11 serves as an axis for a guide roll 15 to rotate upon. The pin 10 is provided with a plurality of small holes 16 and water is supplied to the interior of said pin. which is hollow, through a pipe 17 which is connected at its lower end to a head 18 upon the pin 10 and at its upper end to a passage 19 extending upwardly through a boss 20 on the carrier frame 7 and through a screw-threaded shank 21 thereon. A hollow handle 22 has screwthreaded engagement with the shank 21 and is adapted to contain water which feeds downwardly through the passage 19 and pipe 17 into the hollow pin 10 and out of the holes 16 in said pin into the felt roll 14, whereby said felt roll is kept moistened. A plug 26 has screw-threaded engagementwith the head 18 of the pin 10 and projects into the pin 10 and across the bottomv of the pipe 17 whereby the water may be shut off from the interior of the hollow pin 10 to prevent the moistening roll 1% from becoming saturated. The guide roll 15 is free to rotate between the sides 8 and 9 of the carrier frame 7. The carrier frame 7 is provided with a U-shaped arm 23, the cross bar 13 forming a portion of said Ushaped arm and to this cross bar is ailixed by screws or otherwise a cutter blade 24.

The operation of the device hereinbefore described is as follows: One end of the adhesive tape 25 is pulled outwardly from the roll and laidupon the bundle which is to be taped, a finger of the operators hand being of the tape in position upon the bundle. The handle 22 is grasped by the other hand of the operator and pushed along in the direction in which it is desired to apply the tape. The roll will rotate in the direction of the arrow a, Fig. 1, the tape will pass from the roll partly around the guide roll 15 as shown in Fig. 1, thence into contact with the periphery of the felt roll 11, and from the felt roll it will pass between the roll of adhesive tape and the surface of the bundle, all as shown in Fig. 1. In order that the tape should be held at all times'in contact with the moistening roll 14 independent of the diameter of the roll 5, a pin 26 is provided" and the tape passes between the moistening roll 14 and said pin 26 during theoperation hereinbefore set forth.

I claim:

1. An adhesive tape applying device having, in combination, a carrier frame provided with a plurality of arms, said carrier frame adapted to have a roll of adhesive tape rotatably mounted thereon, a handle on one of said arms, a moistening roll rotatably mounted upon another of said arms, a guide roll mounted on said last-named arm and adapted to guide tape from said roll of tape into contact with said moistening roll, said roll of tape being adapted to be rolled along the surface-of the article to which the tape is tobe applied and to thereby press the moistened surface of said tape against said article.

An adhesive tape applying device having, in combination, a carrier frame adapted to havea roll of adhesive tape rotatably a moistening roll rotatably mounted upon said carrier frame, means to guide the tape from said roll of tape to said Inoistening roll, said roll of tape being adapted to be rolled along the surface of the article to-which the tape is to be applied and. to thereby press said tape said carrier frame being adapted to be rocked. about the axis of said roll of adhesive tape, whereby said moisteningroll maybe brought into or out ofcontact with the surface of said'article. 3. 4. An adhesive'tape applying device having, in combination, a carrier frame, adapted to liavea roll of adhesive tape rotatably mounted thereon, said carrier frame having'a plurality of arms, a hollow handle fast to onerof said arms and adapted to contain liquid, a tube provided with holes in its periphery and extending into the interior thereof, a moistening roll mounted on said tube and means to connect the interior of said tube withthe interior of said handle, whereby said moistening roll may be moistened and means to shut off'the water from said tube.

5. An adhesive tape applying device having-,in combination, a carrier frame, adapted to have a roll ofadhesive tape'rotatably mounted thereon, a moistening roll rotatably mounted on said carrier frame, means to guide said tape'from said roll of adhesive tape to said moistening roll,- whereby the'adhesive surface of said tape may-be moistened and a cutter fast to said carrier frame, said roll of tape being adapted to be rolled along the surface of the article to which the tape is to be applied and to contact with'said surface between said 1noistening roll and said cutter to thereby mois ten said tape'and apply the moistened'surface'thereof to said article and to enable said'tape to be severed.

Anadhesive tape applying device having, in combination, a carrier frame with a pluralitypf arms thereon, said carrier frame adapted to have a roll of adhesive vtape rotatably mounted thereon, a hollow handle adapted to contain liquid on one of said arms, a moistening roll on the other of said arms,- a cutter on another of said arms, means to guide tape from said roll of adheslve tape lnto contact with sald moistening roll and means to convey liquid 5 from said handle to said moistening roll, said roll of tape being adapted to be rolled along the surface of-the article to which the tape is to be applied and to-thereby .press said tape against said article, said from said handle .to said moistening roll,-

said roll of tape being adapted to be rolled along the surface of the article to which the tape is to be applied and to thereby press said tape against said article, said roll being adapted to contact with said article between said moistening roll and said cutter, and said parts being relatively so arranged that said carrier frame can be rocked about the axis of said roll of adhesive tape to bring said moistening roll and said cutter alternately into or out of contact with said article for the purposes specified.
