Be it known that I, JOHN H. \VAT'rnRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anniston, in the county of Calhoun and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Track-Sander, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sanding devices especially designed for use on locomotives or the like, whereby compressed air may be employed as a medium for forcing sand from the distributing member of the sand box, to direct the same to the tracks.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including an air jet disposed in line with the sand feed port from the sand box to the sand trap, to split the volumn of sand passing from the discharge pipe, causing the same to take lateral courses where the same is deposited on the rails. lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of a sand trap constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 22' of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the lower portion of a sand trap, to which the sand box is connected to supply sand thereto, the sand box being provided with sand feeding openings 6 disposed directly above the air nozzles 6.
The air nozzles 6 are disposed between a pair of discharge pipes 7, which discharge pipes 7 have their upper threaded extremities S disposed within suitable openings provided in the base, 9 of the sand trap, the upper section 5 of the trap being secured to the base 9 as by means of the bolts 10 and 11. Thus it will be seen that by removing these bolts, the upper section 5 may be readily and easily disconnected from the Specification of Letters Patent.

It might be further stated that the discharge pipes '7 also have extensions terminating in nozzles to direct the sand to the rails of the track CV61 which a locomotive supplied with the sanding device runs.
In the operation of the device, sand is directed to the sand trap at a point directly over the nozzle 6, whereupon the air passing upwardly through the nozzle splits the column of sand causing the same to take lateral courses to the discharge pipe 7, thereby insuring a proper distribution of the sand, and eliminating any possibility of lumps clogging within the discharge pipe 7., the force of the air blast through the pipe 13 being sufficient to break up such lumps.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as'new is 1. A sand trap including an upper section and a base, said base having openings formed therein, distributing pipes disposed within the openings, an air nozzle located between the pipes, said air nozzle adapted to split a column of sand entering the sand trap to cause the same to move laterally into the discharge pipe.
2. A sand trap including an upper section and a. base, said upper section havin sand feeding openings, lateral discharge pipes having communication with the sand trap, an air nozzle disposed under each sand feed ing opening, said air nozzle adapted to supply air to the sand trap in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of sand entering the trap, and cause the sand to be directed to the lateral discharge openings.-
