Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
Application filed August 3, 1920. Serial No. 400,948.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT R. HUM- PHREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Burnners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention in gas burners.
y improvements are particularly designed by me for embodiment in burners for gas stoves of the type shown in Letters Patcut to Alfred H. Humphrey, No. 1,245,347, dated November 6, 1917, and I have illustrated my improvements as I have embodied them in such burners although they are readily adapted and desirable for use in other relations.
he main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved multiple gas burner in which the gas may be admitted to all or to part of the burner members as desired. I
Second, to provide an improved gas burner having these advantages which is very simple in structure and simple to manipulate to secure the desired result.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a detail front elevation of a structure embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is an inverted view of the upper member of the burner manifold.
Fig. III is an inverted. view of the lower member of the burner manifold with the valve mounted thereon, the gas supply pipe being broken away.
Fig. IV is an enlarged detail view mainly in vertical section on a line corresponding to line H of Figs. II, 111', V and VI, with the valve in its closed position.
Fig. V is a. detail section through the valve on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Figs. III and IV.
relates to improvements Fig.- VI is a detail section through the valve on a line corresponding to line 66 of Figs. III and IV.
Fig. II is an inverted View of the upper member of a manifold of a modified form.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sect ional views are posed in front of the back wall 3. I provide a burner consisting ofa plurality of independent burner tubes 4 having tips 5 delivering to the radiating elements 2. The gas delivery. nozzles 6 are mounted upon the gas manifold 7 to deliver to the lower ends of these tubes 4, this arrangement being in general that shown in the said patent.
The manifold 7 comprises an upper memher 8 having a partition 9 therein dividing it into two chambers as 10 and 11. A bottom plate 12 secured to the member 8 completes these chambers.
The partition 9 in the structure illustrated in Fig. II is a zig-zag partition disposed so that alternate nozzles communicate with each chamber as clearly shown in Fig. II. The gas supply pipe 13 is connected to these chambers through a valve consisting of the casing 14 having ports 15 and 16 therein registerin with the ports 17 and 18, respectively, in t e bottom member 12 of the manifold, the port 17 opening into the manifold chamber 10 while the port 18 opens into the manifold chamber 11.
he valve 19 is rotatable in the casing and is provided with a longitudinal bore or passage 20 communicating with the supply pipe 13. The valve has ports 21 and 22 adapted to be brought into' register with the ports 15 and 16, respectively, of the valve casing. The port 21 is elongated or shaped so that it is fully opened prior to the opening of the port 22, both orts. being opened by the turning of the va ve stem 23 to the left or oounter-clock-wise so that the valve may be fully opened thereby delivering gas to all of the burners.
fixed stop 24 is provided to coact wlth stops 25 and 26 on the valve stem 23;, the stop 25 being in engagement with the stop 24 when the valve is opened and the stop 26 being in engagement with the stop 24 when the valve is opened.
This arrangement permits the delivery of gas to half of the burners to their full capacity or to all of the burners to their full capacity or a limited supply of gas to one set.
of burners with full supply to the other or the admission of a limited supply of gas to one set or group only.
In the modification shown in Fig. VII, the partition 27 is arranged so that the burner chamber 28 embraces the inner group of burners while the burner chamber 29 embraces or supplies gas to the outer burners. Other modifications and adaptations will no doubt be apparent to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates.
My improvements are particularly desirable for embodiment in gas heaters of the type illustrated as they enable the effective operation of the same as conditions may require with a minimum consumption of gas for the heat desired. My improvements are, however, capable of and desirable for embodiment in certain other types of heaters, but I have not attempted to illustrate or describe the s-ame as made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz.
