HLA. BOOTH.
VALVE LIFTER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 5, 1920.
Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
Homer l 00th To all whom it may concern 7N1 STATES .HOMER A; BOOTH, OF PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
VALVE-LIFTER.
Be it kno n that I, HOMER A. BOOTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Valve-Lifter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to valve lifters and has for its object to provide a lifter which is adjustable to different sizes of engines and is provided with a detachable valve washer engaging member thereby allowing various sizes ofwasher engagingmembers to be attached according to the type and size of engine on which the valve lifter is used.
A further object is to provide a valve lifter comprising a vertical member having its lower end curving inwardly and provided with a horizontally disposed ear to which may be attached various sizes of washer engaging members. The vertical portion of said member being provided with a slidable member having apertures therein through which apertures and any of the series of apertures in the vertical member a pin may be passed, said slidable arm having slidably mounted in the end thereof a head ed pin, the lower end of which is adapted to engage and hold the valve, and the upper headed end thereof being disposed beneath a roller carried by an operating lever by means of which lever the pin may be forced downwardly for contracting the valve spring.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the'spirit of the invention. 1
In th drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the valve lifter showing the same in position on'a valve stem.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the lifter.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the lifter, the roller end of the operating lever being broken away to better show the structure and the pin being shown in section. V
Fig. 4 is .a perspective view of the hori- Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 5, 1920. Serial No. 421,897.
zontal plate carried by the lower curved end of the vertical member.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one ofthe detachable washer engaging members.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a vertically disposed bar, the lower end of which is bent as at 2 and to the end of which is connected by means of welding as at 3 a horizontally disposed plate 4.
Plate 4 is recessed as at 5 so as to receive the end of the portion 2 and be welded thereon. Plate 4 is provided with an aperture 6, through which aperture a screw 7 passes and threads into a threaded aperture 8 in a detachable washer engaging plate 9, which washer plate is provided with a washer engaging recess 10 at its forward end and a notch 11 at its rear end which receives the end of the bent portion 2 and forms means for preventing pivotal movement of the washer engaging plate 9 on the screw 7. In various sizes and types of engines various sizes and types of washers are used, thereby by providing detachable washer engaging plates 9, the type of washer plate necessary for the particular kind of washer may be easily and quickly placed in position on the end of the bent portion 2.
Slidably mounted on a vertical portion 1 of the bar is a horizontally disposed arm 13, which bar is provided with a looped portion 14 forming a handle member and also forming in connection with the block 15 which is secured in said looped member, vertically disposed guides 16 in which the bar 1 slides. Horizontally disposed arm 13 may be placed in various positions upwardly or downwardly to accommodate the device to different types and sizes of engines, said arm 13 being held in any position'to which it may have been moved by means of a pin 17, which passes through the looped portion the vertical bar 1. Arm 13 extends forwardly and downwardly and terminates in a vertical portion 19 having a vertically disposed bearing 20 therein and in which bearing a vertically slidable valve engaging pin '14 and through any of the apertures 18 in handle member 14, said handle members being adapted to be graspedand forced toward each other so that the lever 14L may be rocked and the roller 28 which engages the head 22 of the pin 21 forced downwardly thereby causing a downward movement of the pin 21 in the bearing 20. This action causes an upward movement of'the bar 1- and the washer engaging plate 9. The washer engaging plate 9 being in engagement with the washer will force said washer upwardly and cause the valve spring 27 to be compressed, at which time the valve stem pin;28 may be removed. After the pin has s sides of the lever 24. Fingers 29 have their ends rounded as at 30 thereby upon an eX- cessive upward movement of the roller end of the lever Qet, allowing sa1d fingers to come 7 out of engagement with the under face of the head 22 and the roller end of the lever 24: so positioned that the pin 21 may be removed and a longer pin placed in a bearing 20 to accommodate typesof engine valves where a longer pin is needed.
From the above it will be seen that a valve lifter is provided which is positive in its operation, adjustable not only as to type of engine but adjustable to various kinds of valve stem washers and to various lengths of valve stems.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A valve spring contractor for valves of internal combustion engines, said contractor comprlsing a vertically disposed bar having its lower end bentto one side and terminating in a horizontally disposed plate, a de tachable valve washer engaging plate secured to the horizontally disposed plate, a vertically slidable horizontally disposed arm carried by the vertically disposed bar, means for securing said vertically slidable horizontal arm in various positions on the vertically disposed bar, the end of said horizontally disposed bar having slidably mounted in a vertical bearing thereof a valve engaging pin, said valve engaging pin being provided with a head at its upper end, a pivoted lever pivoted to the horizontal bar and having its end provided with a roller for engaging the headed end of the pin and arms carried by the pivoted lever adjacent the roller and extending downwardly and engaging under the head of the headed pin and forming means for raising the pin when the handle end is forced downwardly.
2. The combination with a valve lifter for internal combustion engines, of a detachable washer engaging member therefor, said washer engaging member comprising a plate having a washer recess at one of'its ends and a notch at its other end, said notch being adapted to receive a portion of the lifter and screw means for holding the washer en gaging plate detachably on the lifter.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name, to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
