Geo/ye f? m'yyinfon' GEORGE P. WIGGINTON, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGN'OR TO KALAMAZOO LOOSE LEAF BINDER COMPANY, OF KALAMAZOO, MIGHIGAN.
LOOSE-SHEET DEVICE. I
Application filed May 14,
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Gnonon P. WIGGIN- 'roN, a citizen oftheUnited States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Sheet Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in loose sheet devices.
My improvements are especially designed by me for the handling of loose sheets in accountin or record systems.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved loose sheet device which facilitates the handling or manipulation of sheets in the making of entries or records thereon and also which provides means for securely holding them in a book or binder for filing and, for reference purposes. y
Second, to provide a loose sheet device having these advantages which is very convenient to use and at the same time simple and economical in structure.
Further, and objects relating to structural details will definitely a pear from the de- ;tailed description to fol ow.
I accomplish the ob ects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure whic is a preferred embodiment 5 of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figur'e'I is-a perspective view showing the sheets arranged in a binder for filing or reference purposes. a
Fig. I is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 1 -1 of Fig. I, showing structural details of the binder.
Fig. II is a perspective view of the sheet body-removed from the binder but still retained or bound by the posts.
. Fig. III is a perspective view of the sheets arranged on the support with the posts remaining in the sheet body,
Fig. IV is a perspective view of the support partially broken away showing the holes in the side members through which the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. l, 1921.
1920. Serial No. 381,313.
posts inserted in the sheet body from the under side thereof may be removed.
Fig. V is an inverted detail view of the support.-
Fig. VI is a detail section on a line 6-6 of Fig. III, the posts being shown in full lines.
Fig. VII is a detail plan view showing the manner of offset-ting the sheets, the sheet guide member of the support being indicated bydotted lines.
Fig. VIII is a detail perspective view showlng a portion of the sheets in each holder with a part of the sheets in the receiving holder ofi'set.
Fig. IX is a detail perspective view of the sheet body with part of the sheets offset and the binding posts inserted for placing in the binder. I
Fig. Xis a detail section of afmodified form of binder embodyingthe features of my invention. L i
In the drawing similar-reference characters refer to similar parts -"throu ghout the several views, and thesectional views are taken" looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the sheets 1 are provided with holes 2 and notches 3 at their binding edges. The purpose of the holes and notches will be made clear as the description proceeds. I provide a binder consisting of covers 4 having clamping members 5 pivotally connected thereto and binding members 6 extending between the clamping members. These clamping members are clamped by the bindin sheets, the mechanism %y which this is accomplished being preferably that shown in the patent to Bushong No. 914,383, March 9, 1909, and as such mechanism forms no part of this invention, it is not illustrated or decommodate the sheet bodyf The posts are provided with disk-like heads 8 which engage the outer sheets, and are inserted from members upon the both sides of the sheet body constituting binding members adapted to hold the sheets together as a unit, as shown in Fig. II.
The posts have studs or projecting parts 9 at their outer ends adapted to engage the holes 10 provided therefor in the clamping bars so thatwhen the clamping bars are adjusted to the posts, the sheet body is secured or retained in the binder and at the same time when the clamping bars are separated, the sheet body is freed and may be removed from the binder as a unit as shown in Fig. II.
To facilitate the handling of sheets when removed from the binder, I provide a support designated generally b the numeral 11 and consisting of a pair 0 holders 12 and 13 each comprising an end member 14 and a side member 15 disposed relative to each other to provide the trough-like holders. The side and end members of the holder 12 are disposed at right angles so that when the sheets are arranged thereon with their ends abutting the end member as shown in Fig. VIII, the ,sheets are alined to receive the binding posts. To aline the sheets laterally, the holders are provided with guides 14, the guide 14' of the holder 13 being provided mainly to aline the posts with the openings 16 in the holder so that the posts may be withdrawn through these holes-see Fig. VIwhi lej the guide of holder 12 alines the sheets in an alined body or in an ofl'set relation so that selected sheets may be distinguished, for instance, such sheets as have had their accounts effected, and also the sheets are alined so that the posts may be reinserted in the holes 16. The holes and notches are arranged so that there are registering holes and registering notches when in either position.
The posts may be reinserted with the sheets in ofi'set position as shown in Fig. IX, and the sheet body placed in the binder which is provided with covers which are extended so as to protect the sheetsso ofiset, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. I.
In Fig. X, I illustrate my improvements applied to another type of binder in which the clamping bars 17 are secured to the covers 18 by flexible hinges 19, the clamping bars being connected by posts 20, the details not being shown as they form no part of this invention, and any suitable means for securing the binder members together to coact with theposts 7 being contemplated by me.
My improved loose sheet handling device greatly facilitates the handling of loose sheets for accounting purposes, as the'manipulation of the sheets for-makingrentries thereon is made very convenient. urther, the sheets are securely bound for storage and reference purposes when in the binder.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other modifications or adaptations Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
