Description
, J. T. BINKLEY.
FASTENING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED DEC-l0, 1919.
Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FASTENING DEVICE.
Application filed December 10, 1919.
To allwhom it man concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. BINKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastening Devices. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to a fastening device for use on sample-cases, suit-cases, or other containers.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved struction for releasably connecting, in a secure manner, the sections of a container.
The invention is illustrated, in its preferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a broken elevational View of a container equipped with the improved device, the sections of the container being shown separated slightly; Fig. 2, a section taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1, showing the container in closed condition; and Fig. 3, a broken sectional view, showing the inner sides of the walls shown in Fig. 1.
In the illustration given, A represents a container section comprising the body of the container; A, a container section comprising the closure, or lid, of the container; B, a dowel-clip secured to the outer surface of the wall of the section A; C, a socketclip secured to the outer surface of the wall of the section A; and D, a spring-clip secured to the inner surface of the wall of the section A. V
The container sections may be connected by hinges (not shown) in the usual manner.
The dowel-clip B is provided with a finger, or stud, 1, which is adapted to project into the socket of the member C. The finger 1 is provided at its inner or rear surface with a catch-engaging shoulder constituting a wall of a slot 1. The clip B is further provided with a flange 1 which is secured, by rivets 2, to the wall of the section A and to a metal flange. or valance, 3 with which said wall is equipped. The socket-clip C is provided with a hollow socket-portion at which is open at its upper end and adapted to receive the dowel-pin 1. The clip C is further provided with a flange 4 which is secured, by rivets 5, to the wall of the section A The socket-portion 4 is struck forwardly, forming a bowed projection. Ad-

device of simple con Patented Nov. 1, 1921. Serial No. 343,943.
jacent' the lower end of said projection, the flange 4P is provided with a perforation 4t through wl'iich projects the reduced end of a push-button 6. The body of the push-button is housed in a perforation 7 in the wall of the section A.
The spring-clip D preferably comprises a strip of sheet-metal of substantial thickness, having punched therefrom, and thus formed integrally therewith, a spring 8, which has its upper end turned outwardly or forwardly to afford a catch 8, which is adapted to engage the recess 1 of the dowel pin. The catch-portion 8 works through a slot, or perforation, 9, in the wall of the container section A. The inner or rear end of the push-button 6 bears against the spring 8. Thus, the body of the push-button is confined int-he perforation 7, being disposed between the flange 4 of the clip C and the spring 8.
The end of the catch 8 normally projects into the patch of the dowel-pin l, and the extremity of the dowel-pin is beveled, curved, as indicated atlO, so that the catch will be forced inwardly when the container lid is closed, and the catch will automatically snap into engagement with the-notch 1. Fig. 2 illustrates the manner in which the sections are latched together by the improved device. To release the catch and permit separation of the sections, it is necessary only to press inwardly on the button 6, thus forcing the spring 8 rearwardly and releasing the catch.
The improved device is simple, easily manipulated, and affords a secure latch between the sections of the container. The improved latching device operates automatically in the operation of closing the sections, being in this respect an improvement over the form of fastening device employing a loop, which must be manipulated by hand after the sections have been closed. It may be remarked, also, that the improved device presents no exterior movable parts, except the slight projection of the push-button, which is so disposed with relation to the projection formed by the socket 4 that there is no danger of accidental manipulation of the push-button.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only and no unnecessary limitation should equipped with a spring-projected,
be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with a container comprising sections having walls adapted to close together, of a socket carried by one of said Walls, a dowel carried by the other wall and provided with a catch shoulder, a spring-projected catch working through the wall carrying said socket and adapted to engage said shoulder, and a push-button movably connected with the wall carrying said socket and adapted to retract said catch.
2. The combination of a container-section equipped exteriorly with a rigid catch-finger recessed on its rear side, a container-section forwardly-extending catch working through the wall of said container-section and adapted to engage the recess in said finger, and a push-button movably mounted in the wall of said container-section and adapted to press said catch rearwardly to release said finger. V
3. The combination with a pair of container-sections, of a dowel-pin secured to the outer side of a wall of one section and pro-- vided at its rear side with a catch-engaging shoulder, a socket for said dowel secured to the outer side of the wall of the other section.
a spring-projected catch working through an opening in said last-named wall and adapted to engage said shoulder, and a pushbutton working through said last-named wall and serving to retract said catch.
4. The combination with a pair of container-sections, of a dowel-pin secured to the tion, a spring-clip secured to the inner side of said last-named wall and provided with an integral spring equipped with a catch working through said last-named wall, and a push-buttton adapted to retract saidspring.
5. The combination with a pair of con-V tainer-sections, of a' dowel-pin secured to the outer side of a wall of one section, a socketclip secured to the outer side of the wall of the other section and provided with an outwardly projecting socket-portion and with an adjacent perforation, a spring secured to the innerside of said last-named wall and having a catch working through said wall. and a push-button for said spring projecting through the perforation in said socket-clip.
6. The combination of a dowel-clip provided withmeans for attachment to the exterior surface. of a container-section and equipped with a depending dowel having a rearwardly open recess, a socket-clip provided with means for attachment to the 61(- terior surface'of the other container-section and having a socket portion adapted to receive said dowel and having also a push button perforatioma spring-clip adapted to be secured to the inner surface of said second-named container-section and equipped with a spring having a catch adapted to project through an opening in the wall of the container section andrengage said recess, and a push-button adapted to work through the perforation of said socket-clip and retract said spring.
