W. G. WALL. BODY CONSTRUCTION.
APPLICAIION' FILED JUNE 5. 920. 1,395,538. Patented Nov. 1, 192] I V v m INVENTOR. William G.W3ll
5 I ATTORNEYJ.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. WALL, INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL MOTOR CAB 8c VEHICLE CORPORATION, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, A CORPORA'ION OF NEW YORK.
I BODY CONSTRUCTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. June 5, 1920. Serial No. aasssr.
To all whom, it may e0 ncern:
Be it known that I, VILIJAM G. Van, a citizen of the United States, residing at In dianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana. have inventedeertain new and useful Improvements in Body (unstruction. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to body construction. more especially to the mounting of the automobile body upon the frame of the car. Hitherto the body of the car was mounted on the top of the frame which consists of longitudinal coannel or similar bars and cross bars securing the same rigidly together. Such body construction is compurin tircly weak and cau es the body to sit high on the frame. it eing among the objects of this invention to obviate such disadvantages and pr duce a structure .which is simple. rigid. and allows the body to be mounted in a lower position.
In carrying the objects of my invention into effect. l provide the ordinary metal frame and form the base of the body of beams, preferably wooden. set on edge. The body is so placed on the frame that the beams pass to the outside of the channel bars and parallel with the outer faces of the bars and are held in place by brackets on the. frame or by other suitable means.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and in which sh'nilar reference characters denote similar parts.
The single figure illustrates a perspective View of a portion of an automobile body em bodying my invrntion some parts being shown in section for olearness.
The longitudinal channel bars 1 of the frame have brackets 2 secured by bolts 3 to the lower portion thereof. The horizontal shelves t-of brackets .3 are a substantial distance below the top 5 of the channel bars.
The base of the body includes longitudinal beams 6 and 7 usually made of wood. which are set on edge. as shown and rest on the shelyes 4 of brackets 2. Members T are secured to the beams G and project a distance above the upper edges of beams (l and floor 8 of the body proper is secured in members 7 resting in depressions 9 formed in the upper edge thereof, so as to leave a space it) between the bottom of the ur and the top 5 of the channel bars. Th word it is zittizulieilto the body through mud guard 12 and sheathing 13 is secured to the outside of the body, the sheathing having its lower end looped and overhanging the top of mud guards or running board splashers 12. i
By placing the beams 6 on edge I form a more rigid body ba e with the use of no larger timbers than hitherto. and I am enabled to lower the body con i ilerably. due to the body base being iitted o er and on the outside of the frame. it. is uln'iOllF that various changes in the details of construction. such as the omission f beams T and allowing the floor to rest directly on lltil'. l. may be made in the structure described within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my said invention. what l cniim as new and desire to vsecure by Letters Patent. is:
1. In a body construction a frame. brackets secured to the outer face of said frame and having their top surface a sul stantial distance below the top of the frame. a body base supported by the brackets and extending above the frame. and a door sup ported by the body base at such a point as to owl-hang and be spaced above the frame substantially as set forth.
2. In a body construction a fume, a body base, brackets secured to the outer face of said frame upon which said base rests. in floor secured to said base. said floor being a substantial distance above the top of said frame. said base comprising beams, said beams being set on edge. and sheathing and mud guards secured to said base.
3. In a body construction a frame, a body base titted along the outer face of and parallel-with said frame. mud guards secured to said base, and sheathing also secured to said base. said sheathing overhanging the top of said guards.
In witness whereof. I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis. Indiana, this 2nd day of June. l nineteen hundred and twenty.
