(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. L., 1313.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S'ro'rr, a British subject, residing at Rochdale, county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop- Motions for Doubling-Frames, (for which I have filed application in England, May 12, 1919, Patent N 0. 134,174,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a stop motion for doubling frames of the kind in which in the case of ring frames each bobbin, and in the case of flier frames each flier spindle, is driven by a cone clutch by means of which the rotation of the bobbin of the ring frame can be stopped, and the flier spindle of a flier frame can be stopped by disengaging the clutch and simultaneously the top roller can. be raised out of contact with the bottom roller.
The invention is designed for application to rabbeth or self contained spindles and consists in the particular construction and disposition of parts whereby the rabbeth driving spindle may be permitted to continue rotation, while in the case of a ring frame the bobbin is stopped, and in the case of a flier frame the flier carrying spindle is stopped, and the'means by which the cone clutch is separated and the top roller simultaneously raised out of contact with the bottom roller.
The invention will be fully described with H referenceto the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a side elevation (partly in section) showing the invention applied to the spindle of a ring doubling frame.
Fig 2 is a plan of same.

The rabbeth or self contained spindle A is formed with a cone a on its upper end and is driven by a wherve a and the bobbin B is carried by a member I) with an internal cone at its lower end which rests upon the cone a forming therewith a friction clutch by which it is driven. The bobbin B rests upon the flange b of the member I) and is caused to rotate therewith by pins b projecting into side of the bobbin flange, or it may be otherwise connected therewith. The ring C is of ordinary con.-
struction mounted in a ring rail 0,.
The bottom roller E is carried in brackets in the usual way. The top roller E is carried in a U shaped bracket c, mounted on the end of a vertically sliding rod F, so that by raising the rod the top roller E can be raised out ofcontact' with the bottom roller To the lower end of the vertically sliding rod a lifting plate G is fitted, being adjustably attached by a bracket 7 to be raised and lowered with it. The plate G is provided with an aperture to embrace the cone a, of the spindle A, and is fitted on its upper side with a friction pad 9 of leatheror other suitable material. It is placed over the cone a and below the flange of the cone 6 so that when raised it will lift the cone 5 out of contact with the cone a and at the same time stop the rotation of the cone Z) and the bobbin B, while the rabbeth spindle A continues to rotate.
In a convenient position on the rod F a bracket H is fitted to which a hand lever K is pivoted by which the rod F and with it the top roller E and the cone and bobbin 6 and B are lifted when desired. The hand lever K is pivoted on a stud 7L and is provided with a fulcrum lo which rests upon an incline plane m on the supporting bracket M affixed to the beam M of the frame. As the hand lever K is raised the fulcrum is slides along the incline gradually forcing the rod F upward. A stop it on the bracket prevents the hand lever K falling below the horizontal. The hand lever K also serves as an anti-balloOningplate between the spindles.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, the rabbeth or self contained spindle is formed with a cone a on its upper end, is driven by a wherve a and a flier spindle A carried by the rabbeth spindle, has attached to it at its lower end a hollow cone 6 which engages with the cone a and by which it is driven.
The bobbin B is supported on a bobbin or builder rail in the ordinary way.
The rollers are similar to those shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the top roller is supported from the vertical sliding rod F which is constructed and operated as described in those figures.
The lifting plate G at the bottom of the vertically sliding rod F is of fork shape to embrace a neck on the cone 6 below the flange a and is covered with a friction pad of leather 9' aflixed to it after it is placed in position. The rotation of the flier spindle A is stopped for piecing by the lever G on the rod F raising the cone 72 from the cone a the rabbeth spindle A continuing to rotate.
The friction surface of the cone is increased by inserting studs of leather in the cones a and a 7 WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is In a hand operated stop motion for the spindles of doubling frames, the combination with a rabbeth self contained spindle, a friction driving cone and a driven cone member thereon, of a vertically sliding rod placed adjacent to the spindle, a bracket to support the rod and within which it slides, a bracket on the lower end of the rod, a friction brake plate aflixed to the lower bracket to embrace the driving cone on the spindle, and when raised to engage the driven cone member, a bracket on the'upper end of the sliding rod adapted to carry the top roller of the ma-' chine, a hand lever pivoted to the bracket on the sliding rod and a fulcrum on the handle resting on the supporting bracket, all so disness-es.
