MANICURING IMPLEMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, WILLIAM BENTON ETZWEILER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Penbrook, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and ments in a Manicuring. Implement, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toilet articles and more particularly to manicure implements.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efiicient device of this character equipped with safety nail cutters, whereby all danger of the fingers being cut is obviated.
Another object is to provide such an plement with a file having a cooperating guard to control the length of the nail be.- ing trimmed, so that the nails of all the fingers may be ofuniform length.
Another object is to provide a mamcure implement having a plurality of files equipped each with a guard, said guards varying in width so that nails may be trimmed different lengths at the will'of the user.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a man1- cure implement constructed in accordance with this invention, the parts broken out and in section,
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment illustrated, the implement 1 constituting this invention is composed of a steel plate of any desired shape and size, being here shown rectangular with the center cut out to afford lightness and which is pointed at one end, as shown at 2 to provide a finger nail cleaner, while its opposite end has a recess 3 extending longitudinally inward to provide furcations 4 and 5. The furcations 4.- and 5 are each slotted edgewise, as shown at 6 to provide spaced parallel fingers 7 and 8, the outer faces of which taper toward their free ends, as 1s shown clearly in Fig. 2.' Supported between the ends of the fingers 7 and 8 of each furcation is a knife 9 positioned and spaced from the terminals ofsaid fingers a distance suf- Specification of Letters Patent.

ficient to permit the insertion of the finger nail between said fingers to bring its end to engagement with the knife which is designed to'cut the nail and shape it to conform to the shape of'the fingertip. The
ends of the fingers form guides for the knife in contact with the nailand preventall possibility of the finger being cut. Y
Arranged on the opposed faces of the member 1, and extending longitudinally thereof on opposite sides tion ofsaid member are a plurality of ribs 10, 11, 1'2 and 13 which are spaced from the side edges of the member 1 and from the edges of the cutout portion different distances, for a purpose presently to be described. Each of these ribs has its outer face roughened or serrated to provide nail'filing surfaces. The plate 1 inside of said ribs between them and the walls of the slot 14 in said plate are also provided with roughened or filing surfaces, as shown at 15, the filing faces carried by the ribs being numbered 16. It will thus be-seen that there are eight of these filing surfaces, four carried by the ribs and four by the faces of the plates between the ribs and the opening 14 and that each of said surfaces is provided with a guard.
The guards for the rib carried files are provided by the side edges of the plate, as shown at 17 and the distance between the side edges of this plate and the various ribs varies so that guards of different widths are provided for limiting and controlling the length of the nail to be filed. The inner faces of. the ribs form guards for the plate carried files and said ribs are of different widths for this purpose, as is shown clearly in Fig. 3.
From the above description it will be obvious that the implement herein shown and described includes a plurality of nail files and cooperating guards whereby the nails may be filed different lengths according to the will of the user, the width of the nail to be filed being controlled by the width of the guard on the file used, it being understood that the edge of the guard is engaged with the tip of the finger adjacent the nail being filed and that the file is guided around the edge of the nail withthe guard engaged with the finger.
From the above description it will be obvious that the implement constituting this invention provides for cutting of the nails of the cutout porwithout danger of cutting the finger and for cutting them of uniform length. It also provides a plurality of files for trimming the nails different lengths, according to the Will of the user, as Well as an implement for cleaning under the nails. By the use of the implement every finger nail may be trimmed uniformly thereby adding greatly to the attractiveness of the hand.
s The guards may be of any desired width, being preferably of widths of one sixty fourth of an inch, gradually increasing up- -vvard to five thirty seconds, eight of such guards belng here 'shoWn:for cooperation with the eight files employed. p
This implement may also be made of .different sizes to adapt it tobe carried in'the g pocketof theuser or for homeuse it may be scopeof the claimed invention may bemade V made larger. 7 v I The preferred embodiment of the invention 'is disclosedin the drawings andrset forth in the specification, but it will be un derstood that any modifications within the in the construction without de artin from the )rinci le of the invention or sacrificin any of its advantages. y 1
