Description

ington, (Milldale Post Ofiice,) in the county of the usual position. The socket in this instance UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT DODS, OF SOUTHINGTON, (MILLDALE POSTOFFICE,) CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-SOCKET ATTACHMENTS.
specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,498. dated June 3, 1873; application filed April 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT Dons, of South- Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved \Vhip-Socket Attachment for Wagons and other Vehicles, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to afford a simple means of attaching whip-sockets in a more secure and durable way than heretofore employed. It consists in the combination of a short metal strap embracing the edge of the dash-board, a washer fitting against the same, and a screw, these being so applied to the dash-board and whip-socket that the screw passes through the washer, the strap, dashboard, and screws into the whip-socket, whereby not only may the latter be securely attached, but withal may be secured very expeditiously.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a back or inside view of the dash-board of a wagon having a whip-socket attached according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is the dash-board of a wagon or other vehicle. It is made in the ordinary way of a leather body stretched across an iron frame, and the whip-socket B is arranged on it in is made of wood or some other material that will hold a screw. On it near the top and bottom are fillets a a, which afford a greater thickness for the holding-screws to screw. in. C C are metal straps, which embrace the edge of the dash-board opposite the fillets a a on the whip-socket,-and their ends are opposite each other, and are contiguous to that portion of the dash-board just within the iron. On those ends of the straps which are situate at the front of the dash-boardthere are washers D D. The attaching-screws E E pass through these washers on their way to the socket and have their heads countersunk therein. They pass thence through the ends of the straps and the leather body of the dash-board and screw into the fillets a a on the upper and lower portions of the socket.
In this manner the whip-socket may be secured very expeditiously, and may readily be removed at pleasure. Moreover, all undue strain on the body of the dash-board is obviated.
What I claim as my invention is-- The combination of the straps C C, the washers D D, the screws E E, and fillets a a of the whip-socket B for fastening the whipsocket to the dash-board A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ROBERT DODS.
