To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADOLPH W. MARGI- LETH, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Cincinnati, in the county ofHamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Signs, of which the following is a specification.

An object of my invention is to produce an improved sign adapted for day and night use, in which the subject matter thereof may be changed at a moments notice without inconvenience and without having to rearrange the lighting equipment of the sign.

A further object is to produce a sign in which the intensity of illumination may be varied in accordance with the character of the subject matter to be displayed.

A further object is to produce an improved sign in which permanent and changea 1e advertisements may be displayed simultaneously with a single means of illumination for both signs, arranged for adjustment to increase or decrease the amount of illumination thereof.

These and other objects are attained in the sign described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;

Fig. 3 is a fragmental sectional view showing a modified detail of the sign embodying my invention.

My improved sign consists of ends 4 and 5 connected at their tops by means of a roof 6 and at their bottoms by means of a bar 7, the bar being attached to end part 4 by means of a hinge 8 and to end part 5 by any suitable means, such as the latch construction 9 disclosed in Fig. 1. The inner side of each of the end parts 4 and 5 is provided with the respective guide strips 10 and 11 in which a removable sign board 12 is mounted. At its bottom edge removable sign board 12rests in a groove in a stri 13 provided as an integral part of bar 7. lso connecting the ends 4 and 5 are permanent sign members 14 and 15, these sign members consisting of a frame 16 and a transparency-17.

mounted therein upon pivots 18 secured to each end, are lamp holders 19 adapted to carry electric lamps 20. Each lamp holder 19 is adapted to be rocked upon its pivots to bring'the lamps 20 into position to project their rays with more or less intensity upon theremovable sign board 12 or permanent sign board 17 as desired. Any suitable means such as set screws 21 located in end 5 and which bear against the ends of holders 19, may be provided for retaining the holders in their adjusted positions.

Guides 10 and 11 in which removable sign board 12 is mounted, extend above the roof 6 of the sign to provide support members 22 and 23 to which hangers 2 1 and 25 are secured for the purpose of hanging the sign on the bar 26 which extends from the building. The grooves in guides 10 and 11, when a single removable sign board is employed, may be narrow as shown in Fig. 2, but when a double removable sign board, such as disclosed in Fig. 3, is provided, the grooves and the guides are made of sufiicient width to accommodate the double signs. The double signs are intended in use when it is desired to employ four distinct signs on the removable board, the inner faces also having signs so that when the sign board is unfolded to display the inner signs, the signs which were originally on the outside will then be on the inner sides.

The latch of bar 7 is of such a construction that when in its normal position the tongue 27 engages the lower end of the groove in guide 11. A transversely extending slot 28 formed in guide 11 is provided for permitting the bar to be raised in order to disengage tongue 27 from the groove in the guide to permit the bar to be sprung to one side in order to bring it out of register with the guide so that it may be completely disengaged therefrom as disclosed in dotted lines in Fig. 1. By swinging the bar to its reverse position, the removable sign board may then be removed from the guides and may be turned to display the opposite sign or a new sign board may be inserted in its stead. If desired the removable sign board may be constructed as a black board upon which the merchant may place his advertise ments in chalk, of special sales and attractions instead of having a regularly painted sig'n. Upon the transparencies 17 the name of the merchant may be painted so that in the day time the sign, which is painted on the outer sides of the transparencies will show up plainly and at night the illumination of the lamps 20 will simultaneously illuminate the transparencies and the removable sign part. The illumination of the transparencies may be increased by rocking the lamp holder to bring the lamps toward them and the illumination of the removable sign board may be increased by rocking the lamp holders in the opposite direction, the set screws 21 being employed for retaining the holders in their adjusted positions.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

In a display sign the combination of sides, a roof connecting the sides at their upper ends, cooperating guide strips mounted on each side, each guide strip having a longitudinal slot parallel with the sides, a bottom strip pivotally mounted on one of the sides and having a groove in alinement with the slots in the guidestrips and registering therewith, a catch'on the free end of the bottom strip adapted to engage the guide strip on the other side, a sign board engaging in the slots in the guide strips and bottom strips, a frame depending from the roof on each side of'the guide strips and secured upon the sides, transparencies mounted on the frames, a lamp holder mounted between the frames and the guide; strips, and lamps mounted on 'the lamp holders adapted to illuminate the'sign board and the transparencies- V In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 8th day of May,
