Application led November 19, 193.9. Serial No. 339,061.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY MAsoN, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Leesburg, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence- Gripping Devices, of which the following is a specilication.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, economical and eifective device for use in stretching or erecting'woven wire fence.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure l is a plan view oi a fraction of the device.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line lI--II Fig. l, looking up.
F ig. 3 is a sectional `detail of the cam clamping member.
Fig. e is a perspective illustrating the manner of using the device.
In the views 5 and 5a designate two bars of equal length longitudinally bent to form a tongue onone and a groove on the other so that when they are placed to embrace the l'ence at its opposite sides and clamped together they grip the fence with a tight non-slipping engagement. The bar 5, which contains the longitudinal groove, has iXed to it at several points keepers 6 having inwardly turned lugs or hooks 6, while the bar 5 has journaled to it upon pins l2 at similar points circular members 7. Each of the circular members has at or near its rim two arcuate cam portions 7 that work under the lugs 6 so that when the circular member is turned in the proper direction the bar 5 is pressed toward the bar 5 to effect the clamping of the wire fence between them. The center of each of the circular members is provided with a square boss 8 to receive a socket wrench for turning the member.
Two of the keepers, (3 are shown as provided with an eye Q'adapted to receive the end of a drawing chain l0 the latter designed to be operated by a suitable winch or other tightening means.
ln practice an end of the 'fence is first secured to a stent post and then the device of my invention applied to the fence farther along and while lying on the ground. The device with the fence is then turned to erect position as shown in Fig. et and the fence stretched by drawing upon the chains l0. As soon as properly stretched the fence is secured to a succeeding post, all in the manner usual in erecting wovenwire fence.
The forms of the parts can be changedV without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
Vfhat I claim is:
l. A fence stretching device including, in
g combination, a pair of gripper bars, one of which is provided with transverse keepers having lugs turned inward toward each other to lie over the longitudinal margins of the bar, cam members pivoted on the other bar, said cam members each having opposingly arranged portions to work under. said lugs opposite the margins of the bars to squeeze the bars together.
2. A fence stretching device including, in combination, a pair of gripper bars, one of which is provided with keepers, each including lugs turned inward toward each other, circular members pivoted to the other bar, said circular members each having opposingly arranged cam members near its rim lto work under said lugs and means whereby said circular members may be turned.
