IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,342, dated May 27, 1873; application filed February 15, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, S. J. TAYLOR, of Rome,

county of Oneida and State of New York,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:

side of the rubbing-board, between which the clothes are washed. It also consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully set forth hereafter, by which a cheap, simple, and efl'ective machine is produced.

a represents the frame or box of any suitable construction, upon the bottom of which are arranged in a circle a number of rubbers, b. These rubbers consist of conical pieces of wood, pivoted to the bottom in such a manner that they can rock from side to side, so as to give and yield to the clothes, as they are being rubbed back and forth, and thus prevent both wear and tear. Suspended from the lid 0, by means of the revolving shaft d, is the rubber-board 0 having secured to its under side, as shown in Fig. 2, a number of rocking-rubber, g, the same as those attached to the bottomof the box. This rubber-board is secured to the shaft by means of the spider h, in such a manner as to allow it a free vertical play, and has a spiral spring, i, placed upon its top, so as to regulate its pressure upon the clothes. Motion being communicated to the shaft through the pinion l, the board can be made to revolve continuously around, or back and forth, giving a rubbing motion to the clothes placed in the box, which soon frees them from all dirt. By making the rubbers rock from side to side, not only is the wear and tear less, but a pressure upon the clothes is gained as the rubbing-board passes back and forth.
