UNITED STATES FERDINAND J. TILLMAN,

or srfLoUIs, MISSOURI.
HAIR-CUTTING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND J. TILL- MAN, a citizen of the United States of America, a resident of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Hair-Cutting Device, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a hair cutting device containing a comb and a cutting blade; said cutting blade being normally held out of alinement for cutting engagement with said comb by spring tension so as the comb can be used to hold the hair in position for cutting without being interfered with in any way by the cutting blade, there being a guide to bring the cutting blade in cutting alinement with thecomb, when so desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for an interchangeablecutting blade and an interchangeable comb.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for moving said cutting blade and comb into a position to be used independently of each other that is, the cutting blade can be used for shaving and the comb can be used for combing the hair, without one interfering with the other when so desired.
Other and further objects of this invention will appear in this specification and will be pointed out in the appended clalms, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a front view showing the hair cutting device being held apart by the spring shape handles.
Fig. 2 is a front view showing the device closed in resistance to the spring shape handles.
Fig. 3.is a side view of Fig. 1 of the hair cutting device showing the comb and the cutting edge held out of cutting alinement.
Fig. 4 is a side view of Fig. 2 showing the comb and the cutting blade forced into cutting alinement.
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line VV of Fig. 2 showing the comb and cutting edge forced into cutting alinement by the guide.
Fig. 6 is a view of the cutting device moved in an open position so as to be used independently but with the comb and cutting blade removed.
Fig. 7 is a side View of Fig. 6, partly broken away, showing the parts that hold the razor blade in place.

Figs. 17 and 18 are the screws for holding the comb to said handle.
Referring to the drawings. 1 designates a spr ng steel handle containing a rounded sprlng end 2, and loosely pivoted at 3 to another spring steel handle 1 that is rounded at 5 and containing an end 6 that butts against a pin 7 on the handle 1. spring handles are so shaped that they normally have a tendency to force open through their curve spring ends 2 and 5 as shown in Fig. 1 and also have a tendency to be forced out of alinement as shown in Fig. 3, but they are held in position as shown in Fig.1 and Fig. 3 by guide 8 that is loosely pivoted at 9 to the handle 1 and contains a stopping abutment 10 for limiting the outward movement of the handle 4. This guide 8 is held 1n the position as shown in Fig. 1 by spring 11 that fastens to a stud 12 one the guide 8 and a stud 13 on the handle 1. This spring has a tendency to hold the guide against a pin 14: on handle swung into the position shown in dotted lines of Fig. 1 when not in use, so that spring 11 will hold it against the pin 15. The upper end of the handle 1 has a thinner end 16, against which the comb 17 is adapted to be set. 18 is a plate that is adapted to be set over the comb 17, and 19 and 20 are screws that fit loosely through the holes 21 and 22 of the plate 18 and fits loosely through the holes 23 and 24 of the comb l7 and are adapted to screw through the threaded holes 25 and 26 of the handle 1, thereby securely holding the comb against said handle.
On the upper end of handle 4 is a depressed I partly the top plate Patented Oct. 11,1921.
showing where the comb is These.
1, but is adapted to be Kgfion which a spring space 27 in which the cutting blade 28 may fit. 29 is a short pin over which the hole 30 in the blade 28 may fit. 31 is a longer pin which loosely its through the hole 32 of the cutting blade and also through the hole 33 of the cover plate 3%. is'loosely pivoted at one end by a screw 36 to the handle 4:. Under the screw 36 is a spring 37 that has a tendency to hold the 7 plate 34: 'flat against the handle 4;. It will be seen that it the blade 28 is set in the. .depressed space 27 and the cover plate 34= is swung into the position as shown in Fig. 1', the spring 37 will have a tendency to force the pin 31 through the hole 33, and thereby holding the cover plate 34; fiat against the upper part o1 the handle a and thereby hold the blade 28 in position. 38 is a smallextension of cover plate 3d used for lilting the hole 33 in the plate 34 off the pin 31, when it is desired to move the plate 3a into position shown in'Fig. 6 for the purpose of re moving the razor blade. A is a holding arm that is alsopivoted at 3, having a stud .39
i0 is attached. The other is fastened to a stop-stud This holding arm A. can be operated with the thumb and pushed up against the plate 13, after the comb has positioned the hair the proper length for cutting and therebyfthe holding arm A holds the hair against the plate 18 while the cutting blade'28 cuts the hair. 7
What I claim is- 1. In a hair cutting device a movable cut-' ting edge, a movable comb, said cutting edge adapted to be moved outot traveling cut- "ting alinement from said comb, and a guiding member extending from said. co'mb'to 40 said cutting edge. v 1
2. The combination in a .cuttingjdevice containing a detachable comb and a detachable cutting blade; saidcomb and sai'dblade adapted to be swung in close proximity for 4- cutting engagement, but said comb and blade normally held out of cutting alinee end of spring 40 4.1 on handle 1.
ment. and a guide for guiding'them into proper alinement. V
3. A combination 111 a cuttlng device contaming a comb and a razor, their handles This cover plate 34;.
' that the comb and the razor may said l. The combination ot a cutting device COHCELIHIDO" twospring tension handles; one 7 handle carrying an interchangeable comb,
and the other handle carrying an intercha geable razor; said comb and said razor adapted to be used. independently oteach other and a guide for guiding-said razorinto cutting alinement with said comb.
5. The combination in a cutting device containing a comb and a razor; said comb and razor adaptedto be vbrought into cutting relation with eachv other and a guide for limiting the distance that they may be brought out of cutting relation for disconnecting them from said guide so dependently without interference from the guide or the spring tension. 7
6. In a hair cutting device, the combination of a blade, a comb and'a holding arm, said 'holdin'g arm being" movable and adapt: ed to hold the hair against the comb during the cutting action of said blade.
7. In a cutting device the combination of a comb, a cutting blade normally held out of traveling cutting alinement with said comb, and means cooperable' with said cutting blade and said comb for bringing the cutting blade into cutting alinement.
8. In a hair cuttingdevice, a holder bearing an interchangeable blade, a comb cooperable with said blade, means provided whereby said blade is normally held out of cuttingalinement with said comb, and other means forbringing said blade into cutting alinement. i v
9. In a hair cutting device,ia holder bear; ing an interchangeable blade, operable with said blade, means provided wherebysaid blade is normally held out of cutting alinement with said comb, other means for bringingsaid blade into cutting alinement, and a hair holding device cooperable wlth said blade-and said comb.-
