SNOWPLOW,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @et 4i, 192i.
Application led July 9, 1920. 'Serial No. 394,980.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS J. Bnow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snowplows, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the inventlon is to provide a snow plow or snow dispensing apparatus adapted for use as an attachment to`a truck or automobile or other power or motor driven vehicle for facilitating the movement through snow even when the latter is drifted in such a way as to afford a serious obstacle to trucks or other vehicles under normal conditions and particularly to provide a device of this type wherein the action with relation to the removal or displacement of the snow is in the paths of the wheels of the vehicles to effect a clearing of the tracks through which the wheels may readily progress, and with these objects in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts. of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1, is a side view of a snow removing apparatus embodying` the invention appliedin operative position to a truck.
Fig. 2, is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3, is a front view of the apparatus showing the relations between the complemental rotary members thereof.
Fig. 41, is a detail sectional view the rotary heads.v
The device consists essentially of the rotary heads l() having the spindles 11 which are disposed parallel with the path )of the vehicle indicated generally at 12 and substantially in the planes of the supporting wheels 13 and 14 of the said vehicle, said heads consisting of fans 15 having radially disposed blades 1G and adapted to. rotate in opposite directions and with the paths of the blades in intersecting relation so as to completely span the front of the vehicle covering a transverse area which is equal to or exceeds the widthof the vehicle and disposed in advance of the plane of the fans are the forwardly tapered angers 18 disposed in axial alinement with the fans and serving by movement in advance thereof, to loosen the snow which may have become of one of l drifted or banked in the path of the vehicle,
so that the lateral displacement or scattering of the same may e efectually accomplished by the relatively rapid rotation of the fans.
In the construction illustrated, the auger blades are provided with spindley portions 11a which are detachably connected with the main spindle members 11 by means .of sockets 18 carried by the former and fitted on the projecting front ends of the latter as indicated in Fig. 4, said sockets carrying set screws 19 to secure the complemental spindles in place, -while thek disk portions 15a of the fans are provided with sleeves 2() fitted upon the spindles 11 and correspondingly secured by set screws 2l.
The required rotary movement of the spindles may be effected by means of a special motor or by the driving motor of the vehicle as indicated at 22 in cFigs. 1 and 2, a transverse shaft 23 being connected by gear 24 with the rear ends of said spindles.
The fans as above indicated are adapted for rotation in opposite directions and preferably with their inner sides moving downwardly as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3 to the end that the snow is thrown outwardly at the lower sides of the paths 'of the blade 16 to effectively open the paths for the steering and traction wheels of the vehicle.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A snow removing apparatus for motor vehicles having complemental rotary fans disposed in advance of the vehicle and provided with forwardly extending augers tapering in the direction of their length lto provide forward penetrating extremities, the angers being arranged in axial alinement with the fans, and means for communicating rotary motion to the fans and angers. v
2. A snow removing apparatus for motor vehicles having parallel spindles disposed longitudinally with relation to the vehicle and projecting in advance thereof, fan heads carried by said 'spindles and provided with radial blades, the blades of said fans being disposed to traverse intersecting paths, and angers arranged in advance respectively of said fan heads and carried by the fan spindles said angers being reduced toward their forward penetrating extremities.
