This invention rel tee to an apparatus for heating water and generating steam and has 1 reference more particularly to a slag furnace means for utilizing the existing heat units in the slag of blast furnaces.
The primary object of the invention is to produce an apparatus which will enable steam to be generated by a heating medium such as slag which has heretofore been usually dispensed with in so .far as concerns its adaptation to this use. I
A further object of the invention is to produce an apparatus which will be capable of utilizing large quantities of slag for the purpose mentioned and particularly one whichmay be constructed ata relatively modest cost and economically maintained in operation. I
M The invention possesses further advantages and features which will become apparent as the description proceeds with reference to the accompanying drawings in 3 which- Figure 1 is a plan View of the preferred form of the apparatus showing one side of the same partly in section as on the line 11 Fig. 3.
Fig. 2' is a sectional view on the line 2-3 Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is also a sectional view on the line 2-3 Fig. 1 but showing the movable boiler sections moved outwardly to open the hopper.
Referring to the drawings in detail it is preferred to mount the apparatus upon suitable supports 1 and 2 which may be spaced apart to permit the discharge of slag from the hoppers of the apparatus to a receiver (not shown) which may be positioned beneath the apparatus.
The hoppers may be said to be produced by the two series of movable boiler sections 3 and the two long boiler sections 4 which are fixedly mounted above the sections 3.
The confronting ends 5 of the sections 4; as well as the confronting ends 6 of the sections 3 are arcuate or semicircular in shape so that when the sections 3 are presented inwardly their ends, together with the ends of the sections 4, will practically surround the outer circumference of the main or central boiler 7 which is supported along a medial line of the apparatus and extends from end to end of the same.
The space between the semicircular ends orfaces 5 and 6 of the boiler sections may be, said to constitute the slag hoppers and when the hoppers are filled the slag contamed therein will completely surround the main or sectional boiler :so that the entire circumference thereof may be heated and thus bring about a most efficient heating of the water therein for the purpose mentioned.

To fill the hoppers a pairof spaced parallel troughs 8 and 9 are arranged. along the top of the apparatus over the space be: tween the ends 5 of the boiler sections, 4 and the sides of the main boiler -7. Slag from any suitable source of supply may bev directed along these troughs to fill the hoppers.
Flexible connectionslO connect the boiler sections 3 .and the sections 4 and flexibleconnections 11 connect the sections 3 with the manifold piping 12 and 13 which extends along opposite lower sides of the apparatus.
As a convenient means of selectivelymoving the boiler sections 3 outwardlyto open the hoppers each section is equipped with a steam plunger 14 on its outside end so that steam may be admitted to the plunger housing on one side of the plunger for imparting a pull to the section to be opened and admitted to the housing on the opposite side of the plunger for imparting a thrust to the section to return the same to close its respective part of the hopper.
From the above it will be readily seen that the apparatus is equipped to handle large quantities of slag from which many advantages may be gained as a means of heating water and generating steam.
I claim:
1. An apparatus of the character described, comprising a steam boiler and means for confining a quantity of hot slag around the same for realizing a heat gencrating effect from the slag said means capable of being removed from around the bottom of the boiler for'releasing the slag boiler sections.
2. An apparatus of the character described, comprising a steam boiler and means for confining a quantity of hot slag around the same for realizing a heat generating effect from the slag said means capable of being removed from around the bottom of the boiler for releasing the slag confined thereby and comprising a series of boiler sections each of which adapted to be selectively displaced from around the said steam boiler.
3. In an apparatus of the character described a relatively long steam boiler, a series of boiler sectionssurrounding the same in spaced relation to the circumference thereof, the space between said boiler sections and the steam boiler adapted to contain hot slag, some of said boiler sections adapted to be withdrawn from around the steam boiler to release the slag.
4. In an apparatus of the character described a relatively long steam boiler, a series of boiler sections surrounding the same in spaced relation to the circumference thereof, the space between said boiler sections and the steam boiler adapted to contain hot slag, some of said boiler sections being fixedrelative to the steam boiler and other of said sections adapted to be withdrawn from around the same to release the sla In an apparatus of the character described a relatively long steam boiler, a series of boiler sections surrounding the same in spaced relation to the circumference thereof, the space between said boiler sections and the steam boiler adapted to contain hot slag, some of said boiler sections being fixed relative to the steam boiler and other of said sections adapted to be withdrawn from around the same to release the slag, the said fixed sections being supported above the movable section but in close proximity thereto to provide an unbroken channel around the steam boiler. i

In an apparatus of the character described a relatively long steam boiler, a series of boiler sections surrounding the same in spaced relation to the circumference thereof, the space between said boiler sections and the steam boiler adapted to contain hot slag, some of said boiler sections being fixed relative to the steam boiler and other of said sections adapted to be withdrawn from around the same-t0 release the slag, the said fixed sections being supported above the movable section but in close proximity thereto to provide an unbroken channel around the steam boiler and a pair of spaced parallel troughs arranged longitudinally of the apparatus adapted to introduce the slag around the steam boiler from a suitable source of supply. v-
7.'In an apparatus of the character described and as set forth in claim 6 and in which the movable boiler sections are withdrawn from around the steam boiler by steam plungers, one of which being provided for each one of the sections.
8. In an'apparatus of the character described and as set forth in claim 6 and in which the movable boiler sections are withdrawn from and returned to the said steam boiler by steam plungers, one of which being provided'for each one of the sections.
