Be it known that L'doHN McDoNALD HA'rrnnsLEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 57 County Chambers, 66 Corporation street, Birminghamin the county of Warwick, England, have invent-v edr a certain new or Improvedl Folding Stereoscope, for which I have iled an ap* plication in England, Patent No. 159,243, AOctober' 9, 1919,),and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact ldescription of the same.
This invention relates to stereoscopes of the folding type and' has for its object to provide an .improved and simplified con'- struction. l y
A stereoscope constructed 'according to the present invention comprises a hood or eye lieee carrying a pair of lenses, and a mem r adapted to carry the cards or pictures, which member is attached to the hood by lazy tongs or their equivalents so that 'it can be 'moved toward or away `from the forward end of the hood or may be made to engage with said`c1tdg'to forma closure therefor. g I.:

In the construction illustrated upon the accompanying drawings, the hood or eye plece 1 is made of sheet metal and has both` ends open, therear end 2 being Shaped to fit around the forehead and face adjacent the eyes. -The edge ofthe hood adjacent to the face may be padded as indicated at '3 with leather or the like or this edge may be beaded over.
A pair of "lenses 4 are carried .by two members, one 'of which 5 extends transversely across the interior'of the hood 'and supports the rear faces of the lenses. 'lhe other member 6 is centrally disposed with respect to the member 5 and has recessed portions adapted to receive and support the front and sidel portions of the lenses, ,the member Galles tongues 8 or their equivalents adaplted to pass through slots in the member 5 whereby the former is secured.

The forward -member 10 of the lstereoscope. which is adapted to earrythe cards or pictures 11 indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 1s shaped so that it is adapted. to lit onto the forward end of the hood and to form a closure therefor. For this purpose the forward member has a fiange 12 at its edge adapted to lit overthe forward edge v13 of the hood member in the manner ,of a
' hood member and at the same time to preserve a steady support. 1f lazy tongs are 'employed as in the' 'construction illustrated these may be adapted to fold up and fit Within the hood member in a sheet metal casing formed by a plate 26 which is bent to channel ysection at the bottom thereof as shown at Fig. 3. The lazy tongs may be ate tached to two pivoted arms 16 connected to a sheet metal platev 17 forming part of the picture carrying member, while near the forward end the lazy tongs may be connected to said plate by a pin' 18 which engages with a slot in the-plate.
The rear end of the lazy tongs has a pair of arms 22 pivoted on the plate 26secured within the hood portion, the plate having a slot 23 which is engaged by a pin 241 on the' links or the lazy tongs.
The card or picture carrying member is provided with means whereby a card or picture may be supported therein in the required position'which in the construction illustrated takes they form of a pair of arms 18 pivoted on the aforementioned plate 17, the said arms `projecting outwardly when the device is extended but adapted to fold` inwardly so-as to be with the hood portion when collapsed. .The ends of the said arms' in relation to the hood member.A The pic- .ture may be supported at the vertical edges by two bracketsincluding channel section members. i i
AS previously stated the picture carrying member normally forms a closure for the forward end of the hood member, but when required for use this picture carrying member is moved away from the forward end of the hood and a picture is inserted. The distance betweenv the picture and the lenses carried by the hood can then be adjusted as desired;
Instead of using lazy tongs, equivalent, jointed or telescopic or expansible members may be erar-I oved. c
Vhat l claim rnenis -l- 1. A folding stereoscope comprising a rigidhood member, a flange on the forward end of Said hood iinember, a lens carrying member within said 'hood having a pair of lenses, a rigid 'pli ture carrying member corresponding in shape with the hood memfber, a flange on the rear end of said Dicture carrying member adapted to fit around the flange on the" hood member and form a closure therefor, and extensible connecting means secured to said hood and to said picture carrying` member whereby the picture carrying member can be extended for use.
2. A folding stereoscope comprising a rigid hood member, a flange 'on the forward end of said hood member, a lens carrying member within said hood having a pair of lenses, a rigid picture carrying member corresponding in shape with the hood member, a flange on the rear end of said picture carrying member adapted to tit around the flange on the hood member and form a closure therefor, lazy ltongs secured to Said hood and to said picture carrying member and having an independent pin and slot connection with a plate disposed within said hood and said member whereby the picture carrying member can be extended for use, and a fixed pa rtition member within the said hood having a slot adapted to receive a projection on the lazy tongs. A foldingl stereoscope comprising a rigid sheet metal hood member, a flange on the for 'ard end of .said hood member, a sheet metal lcns carrying member within .said hood having a. pair of lenses, an abutment carried by the hood adjacent the top of the lens carrying memberadapted to support -tho top thereof, a partition memberwit-hin the said hood, tongues carried by said partition member engaging with slots in the bottom of the lens carrying member to .secure the bottom end thereof, a rigid sheet metal picture carrying member corresponding in shape with, adapted to fit over and form a closure for the forward end of the hood iember. a flange on the rear end of said picture carrying member adapted to tit around the flange on the hood member and form a closure therefor, lazy tongs secured to said hood and to said picture carrying member, and having an indepemlcnt pin and .slot connection with said partition member and with the picture ci'xrrying member, whereby the picture carrying member can be extended for use.
