Referring to these drawings, 10designates the shank of the wrench having thereon the handle 11 and provided with the fixed jaw 12. of a button 24. The spring 18 bears against this lockin plate and urges it toward the butt end of the handle. When the locking plate is free and is shifted by the spring into the position shown in Fig. 2, thewalls of the perforation 25 in the locking plate bind on the rod 15, and the greater the pressure onthis rod 15 and on the jaw 14 tending to move the jaw toward the handle, the greater will be the binding action of the locking plate on the rod 15. Thus it will be impossible to shift the jaw '14 toward the handle with the locking plate in the position shown in Fig. 3. When it is desired to shift the locking jaw, however, the button 24: is forced toward the jaws, which turns the lockingjplate into a position at right angles to the axis of the rod 15, and under these circumstanc s the rod 15 can shi t 51110 3 and easily through the looking plate, thus eluding a shank having'a handle portion and 1 a fixed jaw at its end remote from the handle portion, a movable jaw slidably mounted on} the Shank formovement toward or frOm-the v jaw, a rod attached to the movable jaw and permitting the movable jaw- 14 to be ad justed longitudinally upon the-shank. soon as the bIIttOD Q L is released, the spring 18 will urgethe lockingv plate againinto angular relation to the rod: and latch on lock the rod.
' Inasmuch asthe. principle of this device might be embodied in manyforms, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction except as defined in the appended claims. The use of the device will be obvious from what has gone before. f
