' GUM-TAPE-CUT'I'ER AND Moiscrnn'm;
' rAppli cation filedlTune10,1919. Serial No. 303,151.
To all whom it moy concemf Be'i-t known that I, ROGER I. Boss, a cit zen of theUnitedState s, residingat Troy,
in th county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new .anduseful Improvements .in Gum-Tape Cutters and Moisteners, of which the-following is a specification. I
I This invent onrelatesto adev ce for outtlng and IIlOlStBIllIlg gummed tape, and the object thereof is tofeeda stripof gummed tape over a moistener'and to cut 0ft the moistened portion.
Another object is' to a device adapted to feed a strip of tape from a roll over a moistener and a cutter for cutting off the moistened strip from the roll, the feed-,
ing means being adapted to actuate the ,cutting means.
A further object is to provide a device adapted to feed gummed tapefrom a roll over a moistener and a cutter forcutting off the :moistened strip, the cutter being adapted to be actuated when .the feeding of the tape is interrupted.
A further object is to provide a device for feeding tape from a roll over a moistener and to cut off the moistened portion of the tape from the roll and means whereby the length of the moistened portion may be regulated at will.
With the above and the related objects in view this invention comprises the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, a preferred embodiment whereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and is embraced within the scope-of the appended claim.
In the said drawings:
Figure 1' is a side elevation of my cutter and, moistener partly in section to disclose the operating means; j
Fig. 2 is a central section of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a reverse side elevation of my device; I
Fig. 4 is a front elevation thereof, and
Fig. 5 is a detail showing an adjusting device in connection therewith.
Referring more particularly to the drawings for a detail description of my invention, 6 represents a frame provided with bearings for a reel 7 and with a tank 8 opposite said bearings. Intermediate the bearings and tank the frame is provided with a gear chest 9. The chest 9 is provided with abearing for a shaft 10 which I Specification of I ietters Patent.
f Patented Oct. 4,1921,
carries an intermittent gear 11. The intermittent gear is in mesh;with a pinion 13 mounted on a shaft 14: carrying a roller 15. A- roller 16 is mounted on a shaft 17 parallel with the; shaft 14. On the shaft 10 is 'also n 1ounted a spur, gear 12in mesh with I plIlloIl l mounted on .a shaft 20 supported by bearings of the tank 8. ,On the 'sha ft120 between the sides of the tank is mounted a pulley 21' driving a belt 22 running over. idler s23. On the frame firearwardly of the tank8 and in fr0nt .of the roller .15 is fixedly mounted, a knife edge 24.
A-knife edgei25 adapted to cooperatewith the knife'edge 24 is fulcrumed at one end on a bracket 26. A rod 27 is pivotally connected at 1ts upper end with the free end of the cutting edge 25 and is projected" through and slidingly supported by brackets 28 and 29. The rod 27 carries a coil spring 30 connected therewith at one end and with abracket 28 at its opposite end,
and is provided with a pin 31 intermediate the brackets 28 andi29. The shaft 10 is adapted to be operated by a crank 32 provided with a" handle 33. On the shaft 10 between the frame 6 and the crank 32 is mounted a sleeve 34: provided with an arm and with ears 36. The ears 36 are provided with bearings for a pin 37 carrying a latch 38 adapted to register with a recess 39 of the crank 32. 1
The operation is as follows :The free end of a gummed roll of tape 40 mounted on the reel7is passed between the rollers 15' until the'portion of the gearll free of gear teeth begins to roll over the pinion 13 which interrupts the feeding of the tape. This coincides with the arm 35 in position to engage the 'pin 31. The further movement of the crank 32 causes the arm 35 to bear against the pin 31 which forces the rod 27 downfeed between said roller 15 and the roller 16 wardly compressing the spring and causing the knife edge 25 to register with the knife edge 24 shearing off the strip fed through it from the rest of the r0111 During the rotation of the shaft 10 the gear 18 in mesh with the pinion 19 mountedon theshaft 20 causes the pulley 21 to rotate and drives the belt '22 through the water of the tank 8 which wets the surface and as the wet belt moves under the strip of tape it moistens it.
From the above it will be understood that during each revolution of the crank 32a strip is paid outand moistened and cut off and that at the time when the cutting oif takes place the feeding is stopped since the cutter is'operated during the interval when the smooth portion of the gear 11 is in mesh with the pinion 13. If a longerstrip is to be cutoif the-latch 38 is forced out of the recess 39an'd the sleeve 34 will be free to .move on theshaft10 so that the turning of the shaft will not transmit any motion to the the shaft 10 will cause-the arm 35 to force the rod 27 downwardly until the arm is forced ofl said pin when the spring 30 causes the rod to resume its normal position and move the-lmifeedge awa from the knife ed e 24.-
aving thus described the invention,
what is claimed as new, is: g
The combination, of a frame, means for feeding a strip over the frame, means for moisteningthe strip, a cutter pivoted at one end at one side of the frame and extending across the frame between the feeding means 1 and the moistening means, a rod sl-idab-ly mounted .on'the opposite side of the casing and connected at its upper end-tothe free end of'said cutter, yieldable means for hold- 5 ing saidrod normally raised; a pin projecting laterally from the said rod, a crank mounted upon the side of the frame, a tappet arm carried by said crank and adapted to p impinge against said pin; and means driven moistening means; V
