Description

W. G. DUNHAM.v
HEAD FOR-DISPENSING VESSELS.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 10, 1921.
Patent-ed Sept. 27, 1921.
IN V EN TOR.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM. G. DUNHAM, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM J. KEITH, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
' HEAD FOR DISPENSING VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 27, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. DUNHAM, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at New Britain, in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heads for Dispensing Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to perforated heads or tops for boxes, cartons, bottles, or other vessels for dispensing powder and other materials.
Heretofore the contents of the vessel, such as powder, has sifted'through the cooperating perforated plates of the head even when the perforations have not been in registration with each other. It is a purpose of the present invention to overcome the above defeet; also to thoroughly conceal the operating connections; to facilitate the operation of the device by a natural and usual movement of the hand; and to attain these results in a simple and inexpensive structure.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification- Figures 1 and 2 are a top plan view and a side elevation respectively of a head for dispensing vessels embodying my invention,
Fig. 3, an enlarged section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4, a section on line 4l4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5,11 top plan view of the device with the cap removed, and
Fig. 6, a like view of the same with the cap and valve removed.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
My device in its present and preferred form of embodiment consists of a cover 10 comprising a side wall or flange 11 preferably provided with a thread or spiral cor- 1 rugation 12. and a body 13 provided with an annular lateral swell or shoulder 14 integral with the attaching portion 11. The body is provided with an annular series of holes 15, and upon its upper face with an incomplete annular rib 18 whose ends 19 form stop shoulders or abutments. A valve member is provided consisting of a circular disk 21 whose thickness equals the height of the rib 18. The disk rests upon the cover 13 with its peripheral edge in rotary contact w th the rib 18. This member is also provided with an annular series of holes 23 whose radial distances are equal to the radial distances of the holes 15. Upon the periphcry of the disk is a radial lug 25 extending between the stop shoulders 19.
A rotatable cap 27 comprises a body 28 engaging the rib 18, and a flange 29 loosely embracing the shoulder 14. Upon the body 28 is an internal incomplete annular rib 30 whose ends 31 form operating shoulders.
The space between these shoulders 31 is substantially the same as the space between the shoulders 19. The rib 30 is of slightly greater diameter than therib 18, so that the inner face of the former slidably engages the outer face of the latter, and the bottom of the rib 30 rests upon the cover body 13. The lug 25 extends into the path of the shoulders 31. The exterior of the flange 2-9 has a. milled or corrugated surface 36 for manual engagement. The body 28 of the cap is provided with an annular series of holes 37 whose radial distances are the same as those of the holes 23. The spaces between the holes 37, 23, and 15 are the same.
The device is operated by circularly moving the rotatable cap 27 through the contact of one Or the other of the shoulders 31 with the lug 25 whereby the disk 21 is rotated at will between the stop shoulders 19. In Figs. 3, 4, and 5 the three series of holes are shown in full lines in registration, so that the contents of the vessel to which the cover is attached may freely escape. With the parts as shown in open position the openings are closed by rotating the cap 27 in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 4 as follows. The left hand shoulder 31 advances into contact with the lug 25 which throws their respective holes out of registration with each other. The shoulder and lug now continue to rotate together until the lug 25 strikes the right hand stop shoulder 19. as shown in broken. lines, and this movement throws the holes 15 of the cover out of registration with the holes of the cap and valve. Thus the holes of all three members are staggered relatively to each other, and thoroughly closed.
I claim 1. In a head for dispensing vessels, a cover provided with dispensing holes. a cap provided with dispensing holes rotatably engaging the cover. an incomplete annular rib tion of the cover, a disk valve provided with dispensing holes rotatably mounted on the cover and embraced b the rib a ca inclos- 10 ing the valve rotatab y engaging t e cover and provided with dispensing holes, an incomplete annular rib on the cap, and. a peripheral lug on the valve extending between the ends of both ribs.
