embodying curved spring spokes.
The principal object of the invention is to greatly simplify the constructions of spring wheels of this kind whereby the same may be cheaply and easily manufactured as well as readily assembled for use with the various parts durably connected.
, Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, 4
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a spring wheel constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the wheel shown in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a fragments view partly in section along line III--I I of Fig. 2 and rawn on a larger scale,
Fig. 4. is a face view of the spoke carrying hub plate,
Fig. 5 Is an edge view thereof,
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4 of the spoke retaining hub plate, and
Fig. 7 is an edge view of the device shown in Fig. 6.
Referring more in detail to the several views, the invention embodies a spoke carrying hub plate 5 having a central axle receiving portion 6 of tubular form surrounded by an inwardly projecting annular flange 7 which is disposed between the inner and outer edges of the plate. The plate 5 is provided around its margin and upon its inner face in spaced concentric relation to the annular flange 7, with a plurality of inwardly projecting lugs 8, said lugs 8 being uniformly spaced apart to pro- 5 vide slots asst 9 for receiving the inner ends of the curved spring spokes 10 which are formed of suitable 'sprlng metal and whlch are of suflicient thickness to tightly fit within the'slots 9. As shown clearly in Fig. 1, the inner ends of the spokes 10 are flanged as at 11 to engage the inner faces of thelugs'S, whereby outward movement of the spokes relative to the plate 5 is prevented for holding the inner ends of the spokes within the slots 9, inward movement "being prevented by 11 with the annular flange 7 of the plate 5.
engagement of the flanges Another hub plate or disk 12 of similar diameter to the diameter of the plate 5 is rigidly fastened against the. end faces of the lugs 8 by means of bolts 12 or the like which pass through openings 13 in the disk 12 and similar openings 14 provided in the disk 5 and lugs 8 thereof between the slots In this way, the inner ends of the spokes are held from lateral displacement out of the slots 9, and the cap plate or disk 12 is provided with a central hub portion 15 which acts as an axle receiving portion and which is alined with the axle receiving sleeve 6 of the disk 5 when said disks are bolted together. The outer end of the hub portion 15 is threaded as at 16 for reception of the usual hub cap 17.
The spring spokes 10 are preferably bowshaped or substantially bow-shaped as shown in the drawing and their outer ends are detachably fastened to the inner face of a felly 18 of any desired form, the felly being held normally concentric with the plates, 5 and 12, and the fastening means for attaching the outer ends of the spokes 10 to the folly primarily consisting in a bolt 19 passing through the spokes and through the felly as wellas through a suitable metallic rim 20 fastened on said felly, a nut 21 being threaded upon each bolt 19. I
The spokes 10 are each provided with an opening adjacent its outer free end as at 22 for reception of a radially extending bolt 23 whose outer end is smooth and reduced as at 24 for reception within a socket 25 provided in the inner face of a removable rim 26 which is fitted around the rim 20 and which carries a suitable cushion tire 27. The bolts 23 coiiperate with the bolts 19 for relieving the spokes of turning or rotational strains in addition to the function of securing the detachable rim in place.
From the foregoing description, it Will and is capable of being cheaply and easily manufactured as well as readily assembled for use without the requirementof special skill.
It is believed that the construction and operation as well as the advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
Minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the in-' vention as hereinafter claimed.
What is claimed as new is:
A spring wheel including a spoke carrying hub section the spokes of the hub section being formed of curved sheet metal, a felly having a permanent rim secured thereon, a bolt passing through the outer .ing provided with sockets in its inner face,
and a removable bolt passing through the free end of each spoke and through the felly and permanent rim, said detachable bolt being provided with a reduced smooth outer end seated within asocket of the detachable rim.
In testimony whereofI afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL KOSTEGKI.
