UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFICE WILLIAM'M. YTAP'LIiT, or sT. Louis, MISSOURI,` AssIGNoRor ONE-HALF rro CHARLES' SCHROEDER, OF'ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
sAsnl-FASTENER'.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. TAPLIN, a citizen of they United States, andvresident vof St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Fasteners, of which the following isa specification containingv a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the acforming a part thereof.
'My invention relates to an improved adjustable burglar-proof window-Ventilating sash-fastener, and it consists inthe novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and distinctly pointed out in the claim found at theend of this specication. Y
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device for adjustably locking together the sashes of windows, to make the windows practically burglar-proof, and yet permit the sash to be partly or fully opened for purposes of ventilation; and which will be of very low cost in manufacturing and attaching the lock, owing to the simplicity and ease of application thereof.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a horizontal fragmentary section of a window and the sash thereof, having my invention applied thereto; the section being taken on the line 1-7-1 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is an inside front elevation of a portionof a window and the sash thereof,
illustrating the same parts that are shownv in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 isan enlarged detail vertical`sec-A tion, take-n on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged (or rather a fullsized) detail plan-view of the clampingbracket, detached.
The numeral 1 designates the windowframe, in which are arranged Vthe usual sashes having the horizontal meeting-rails 2 and 3.` vertical side-rails, and (in some cases as here shown) a vertical center-rail which separates the glass.
Fixed. to the lower portion ofthe said vertical center-rail 4, or to the lowerportion of one of the ,side-rails of the sash, and extending upwardly a suitable distance, above the meeting-rail 2 of the upper sash, is a Yvertical locking-plate 5.
Said locking-plate 5 is provided upon its back with a series of lugs or projections 6, and a tapered or conical perforation 7 ex- Specification of Letters Patent. Patenitd Sept, 20, 19,21,v
7,1921. serial No. 443,205.
tends through said plate and through each of said lugs. Y
Said locking-plate 5 is secured to the sash by means of common screws 8, which pass through said/conical perforations 7 in both plate Vand the lugs 6, and engage the sash, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3.
Said lugs 6 act as spacers, to hold said plate 5 a distance away from the vertical sash-bar 4, and permit the action hereinafter described.
The locking-plate 5 is provided with a vertical row of horizontal serrations, or is knurled, or otherwise made rough at 9, leaving the edges of said plate smooth, so that said edges may freelyvslide in the space 10,
between the body 11 and the integral opposite overhanging clamping-jaws 12 of a clamping-bracket.
Said clamping-bracket 11 is secured to the upper side of the meeting-rail 3 of the lower f sash, by means of screws 14 passed through countersunk perforations 15 formed in said bracket, so that when the sashes are adjusted up or down the said llocking-plate 5 may move freely in the said space 10 between the body of the bracket and said clamping-jaws 12 thereof, past the projecting spacing-lugs 6 and screws 8, and run out of saidl space 'and off of said bracket, whenever the sashes are opened a greaterdistance than the length of said locking-plate.
A horizontal integral boss 16 is formed upon the upper-side of the said clampingbracket 11, and a long thumb-screw 17 is threaded completely through the said boss, vas well as through the body of said bracket, so that theattenuated inner end of ysaid thumb-screw will engage said serrations 9 of said locking-plate 5, in locking the two sashes together.
By tightening the said thumb-screw 17, the sashes will be securely locked together, and it will be impossible for a burglar to move the sash andv enter the house when Y said thumb-screw is firmly set against the I claim l l The improved sash-fastener, comprising a clamping-bracket having'inte'ral opposite jaws with a spacing-lug-passage between themselves, and there being a locking-plate space between said jaws and the adjacent inner end of said bracket; means for securing said bracket to the meeting-rail of a sash; a
vertical slidingv locking-plate provided on its lugs to pass up and down in the said spacinglug-passage between said opposite jawsof said clamping-bracket; screws for securing;VV
the said plate to the sash; and a thumb-screw threaded horizontally through theV body of said clamping-bracket, the Vinner end of said thumb-screw being attenuated, to rengage said locking-plate and force the same into contact'v with said' opposite jawsjof said clamping-bracket, and lock said plate inthe space between'said jaws andthe body of the clamping-bracket.V Y Y Inl testimony whereof, I have signed my naniefto this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
