Specification of Letters Patent.

T 0 ally) ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST II. MEINERS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at St.
after particularly described and distinctly claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved cylindrical reinforced concrete manhole and sewer-inlet casing, have a truncated upper section surmounting a series of body units that are semi-cylindrical, and locked in place one above the other, and the entire structure supported upon a base-plate when in use.
A further object of my invention is to manufacture each of the several units (or sections) above mentioned, elsewhere than in the position in which they are to be used, as by so doing a large number of each unit may be manufactured at a suitable plant and held in stock, and removed from stock and set up at the point of actual use, as required; as I have found that such knockdown construction possesses great advantages in cost and labor of erection over the brick and concrete manhole casings, and sewer-inlet casings, that haveheretofore been primarily built up from the raw materials, on the ground where they are to be permanently located and used- In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side-elevation, partly in section, of a manhole casing constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar vlew of the invention 1n a modified form,
known as a sewer-inlet casing, and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of two semi-cylindrical sections, having their ends placed together to form a cylindrical layer, and one of said sections being broken away to show the reinforcing steel embedded therein, and apart of an overhead section resting upon one of the lower supportingwhich Shall molds and pour the concrete at the point of actualuse of the casings.
As shown, the intermediate sections 2 are placed in pairs, with their ends abutting, to form a layer, and the joints of all of the layers are broken, and relative rotation of the superposed layers is prevented by a metallic L-shaped step or ladder hand-hold 5 embedded partly in opposite registering recesses in the two sections, at the joint between them.
Said metallic steps 5 project upon the interior of the casing, and may be used as hand-holds, and as a ladder, in descending into or in ascending the interior of the easing, in cleaning it, or in building and repairing the parts.
The outer arm of said L-shaped steps stands in a vertical position and bears against the exterior wall of the adjacent section, and assists in laterally holding the sections in place, as well as prevents the latter from' being pulled inwardly and detached.
In the manhole form, shown in Fig. 1, the lowermost sections 2 are cut away at 6, to form openings for the sewer or water pipes 7 which are located in said holes.
In the sewer-inlet casing form, shown in Fig. 2, the conical top-section 1 is cut away at 8, to form an inlet-opening through which the surface water from the street may enter the casing and pass out of same through the usual trapped discharge-pipes 9, suitable openings 10 being formed in the sections 2 for said pipes. r
I claim A knock-down reinforced concrete manhole and sewer-inlet casing, composed of a series of ready-made layers of semicircular sections having their end-joints overlapped by adjacent sections, and the ends of two sections of each layer being abutted; there being opposite registering recesses. in certain sections at the joint between them; and metallic L-shaped steps placed partly in the recesses of the under sections, and partly in the recesses of the section immediately above it, the outer arm of said steps being in a vertical position, and in contact with the exterior wall of the adjacent section, to laterally hold said sections in place, and prevent inward movement of said steps.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST H. MEINERS.
