WATER-TUBE BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 20, 1921.
Application filed February 21, 1921. Serial No. 446,700.
' exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
-My invention consists inthe novel const'ruction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly described and distinctly claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved water-tube boiler, for high or low pressure service, and forany other de sired purpose; and which boiler'shall'be of simple construction and low cost, as well as durable and eflicient'i 1 In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a rear vertical section I of a boiler constructed in accordance with my invention, the section being taken on the line 11 of Fig. 2. Y Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, taken through the same boiler on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional side-elevation of the boiler, and i Fig. 4 is a fragmentary enlarged detail section of the mating flanged tube-sheet and its cover-plate, illustrating the manner of connecting said tube-sheet and cover-plate by means of anchor-bolts and stay-bolts.
In the present form of my invention, I provide headers composed mainly of front and rear mating flanged tube-sheets '1 and cover plates 2, each of which is made with a marginal flange 21. I H
' The diameter of the flange on 'the said tube-sheets 1 is slightly less than that of-the said cover-plates, so that the flange of the latter will slip over the flange of the said tube-sheets, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4;.
A series of water-tubes 3, and a steamdrum made of larger'pipe or tubing, 9, have their ends expanded or otherwise secured in a well-known manner in holes formed in the opposite tube-sheets 1.
The front tube-sheet is set higher than the rear one, as shown in Fig. 3, so that said water-tubes and steam drum will be inclined upwardly from their rear to their front ends, to facilitate the circulation of the liquid as well as to permit the steam to be readily discharged at-the'upper ends of said parts.
The ends of said Water-tubes 3,and the outer ends of said steam-drum 9, are in communication with a space 22 between each of the tube-sheets 1 and its cover-plate 2, so that there is a clear and unobstructed passage for the circulation of the water and steam from said tubes and drum into said space.
In building the boiler, the said water-tubes, 3 and the said drum 9 are placed in the said tube-sheets 1, of course before the said coverplates are placed in position.
Said cover-plates 2 are readily detachable, and may be quickly placed in position and removed, as may be required for cleaning or IGPELHS.
A steam -tlght and water-tight joint is I made between the adjacent flanged tubesheets 1 and cover-plates 2 by means of a suitable copper-covered or other common gasket 4 that is located in the space between sheets and the mating cover-plates. Fig. 4.
A proper number of stay-bolts 5 and anchor-bolts 6 are arranged .to detachablyconnect the said cover plates 2 to the said tubesheets, thestay-bolts being arranged at a suitable distance apart between the ends of the Water-tubes 8, so as to fully stay and reinforce the flat surface of the cover-plates, and avoid all danger of damage to the latter by the pressure exerted upon their inner surfaces. I
Said anchor-bolts 6 are arranged symmetrically in a circle near the flanges 21 of the cover-plates and tube-sheets, and close to the said gasket 4, so that sufficient-compression may be thereby exerted upon the latter to make an efficient and durable joint between said plates and said sheets.
The body of said stay-bolts 5 and anchorbolts 6 is slightly'tapered, or made conical, at'a point adjacent their heads 23, and the holes in which said tapered portions are fitted are correspondingly conical or tapered, and a driving fit is made between said bolts and their tapered tube-sheet holes, thereby insuring a water-tight and durable joint at all times in that place, without the use of gaskets or packing.
Said stay-bolts 5 and said anchor-bolts 6 are screw-threaded as shown, from the said tapered portions to their outer ends, and permanent lock-nuts 24 are set firmly against the outer edge of the flange 21 of said tubethe surface of said tube-sheets 1 after being threaded upon said bolts, within the said water-space 22 between said'sheets and their adjacent cover-plates.
Spacingnuts 25 are threaded upon said stay-bolts 5 in contact With the inner surface of said cover-plates, to space the latter and the said tube-sheets 1 apart, and to receive the strain or thrust of cap-nuts 26 which are threaded upon the outer ends of said stay-bolts Said cap-nuts 26 have closed outer sides or ends, and are set tightly against'the outer surface of said cover-plates 2, Without gaskets, so as to form a tight joint with said surface, and prevent leakage thereat.
' Cap-nuts26 are also threaded upon the outer ends of said anchor-bolts 6, for securely clamping the.-cover-plates into contact with the said gaskets 4.
The boiler, constructed as just described in detail, may be set in any approved or desired manner; but inthe present illustration of my invention I have shown it supported in an inclined position fore and aft upon suitable front and rear vertical walls 14 of a fire-chamber at the base of which a con1- monarrangement of gas-burners is mounted and supplied with gas through the usual gas-cock or valve 10; but, of course, my boiler can be fired with coal, coke, oil, gasolene, or any otherfuel, by displacing said gas-burners with grate-bars or some other -appropriate heat-producing devices.
Suitable air inlets 13 are formed in said front and rear walls 14, for permitting a supply of air to the said gas-burners 7. V
The sides of the fire-chamber are formed ofasbestos orfire-clay material 11, in the present case, and the same material is 'extendedupwardly and over and around the top of the boiler, so as to inclose the said Water-tubes 3 and the said steam-drum 9 at the top of the boiler, except at a point near the rear end of the boiler, where an opening is made in said inclosing material for the passage of a smoke-pipe19, and also at a point about midway of the length of the boiler, where another opening is made for the passage of a steam-pipe 8.
Said smoke-pipe 19 is in. communication with the said fire-chamber, and carries ofl the products of combustion after the flame and heat has passed upwardly through the spaces between said water-tubes 3 Said steam-pipe 8 has its lower end connected to an elbow or T 16, which forms a part of the said steam-drum 9, so that the steam or vapor generated in the boiler may be conducted to the steam-engine or other device in which the steam is to be used. A sheet-metal casing 15 incloses said material 11. V
A common safety-valve 18 isattached to said steam-pipe at a point near the boiler,-
for an obvious purpose,
The usual Water-column 17, is provided with the well-known glass water-gage and try-cocks, and a steam-gage is also fitted to the upper part of said column; all for. obvious purposes.
The numeral 12 designates a door-opening in the front wall of the fire-chamber.
The numeral 20 designates common baflies,
understood without further description.
Iclaimzwe A water-tube boiler, comprising two cylindrical headers, water-tubes connected to said headers, and each ofthe latter com-v prising a circular tubesheethavinga marginal flange, a removable cover-plate-therefor having a marginal; flange adapted to telescopically engage the said marginal flange of the tube-sheet, a seriesof anchorbolts passing through said tube-sheets and through their cover-plates, as well-as through the Water space of said header, said bolts being arranged near said flanges and being adapted to removably clamp the parts to I,
gether, and make a tight joint between said tube-sheet and cover-plate, stay-bolts de-i' tachably connecting the tube-sheet and cover-plate, and arranged at suitable intervals within the space bounded by the said anchor-bolts, and detachable nuts on the outer ends of said anchor-bolts and staybolts, whereby the said cover-plate may be removed for cleaning and repairs. I
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses. v WILLIAM coUNoEL; Witnesses:
