To @ZZ 'whom z' may concern Be it known that we, JOHN LYNCH. CHARLES MCGUIRE, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city lof Seattle, county of King, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump-@hopping Machines, of
which the following is a specification.
.vention is to provide ra portable, stump chopping machine which operates after the Afashion of a pile driver, andV vwherein the chopping, or cutting, blade isliXedat the lowerV end of a .heavy reciprocally mounted shaft that may be mechanically raisedV and then dropped, so that the .cutter will cut,
vide a device of the above described character, comprising means wherebythe cutter carrying .shaft mayL be .moved rotatably within its support while inv action,'so. as to adjust or, regulate the direction ofthe blade to accomplish the best results, and other means. whereby thechopping shaft may be inclined to .different positions to best reach; the'object against which it may be directed.
It is also an Iobject ofthe invention to provide a machinel of the above character that maybe used for other work outside of destroying stumps, such as for hole drilling purposes,.post driving, chopping, etc.'
In accomplishingthese and other objects of the invention, we have provided Vthe. improved details of construction, the'preferred forms of which are ,illustrated in the r ac-A *empanying drawings, wherein'- Figure .'l'isfa side elevationof a stumpj chopping machine embodying the' present invention. To swing theshaft todifferent positions in theverticalplane, we have provided the following mechanism: y

Threaded 'on the shafts 58 and-59 at opposite sides ofthe chopping shaft sleeve 22, are blocks69 and 70 into which are pivotally extended the trunnions 71 and 72 of a ring 73 ythat is slidably mounted, about; the sleeve 22. v
This construction provides that rotation of the shafts 58 and 59 will cause similar` shifting ofthe blocks 69 and 70 therealong andthis will cause the lower end of the sleevetob'e swung inwardly or outwardly to adjust thedirection of operation o f the chopping shaft accordingly. i
In operation, the base is IInovedup to a stump as shownin Fig, 1, the choppingv shaft .isthen raised and is inclined,by operation of the crank 67, tosuch position that it Vwill be directed against the., stump. Ina machine of the character described, a base, a .frame structure erected upon the base to extend forwardly thereof a ring member supported by trunnions at its opposite sides, at the upper end of the frame to swing` about a'horizontal axis transversely of the base, a guide'sleeve suspended rotatably from its upper end within said ring, a chopper shaft slidably keyed within said sleeve, a cutter blade at the inner end of the chopper shaft, means for raising and dropping the chopper shaft, a collar slidable on the lower end of said sleeve having laterally extending trunnions thereon, threaded shafts extended along opposite sides of said sleeve, yblocks mounted on said shafts and having said trunnions mounted therein, sprocket wheels on said shafts,- a crank shaft fixed in the lower part of the frame, aY
sprocket wheel on said shaft and a chain belt extended over said sprocket wheels Vwhereby rotation of the crank shaft effects adjustment of the sleeve for the purpose set forth.
