To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL IB'AoH, a citizen of Germany, who have declared my intention to become a citize of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Hub-Cap-Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hub cap locking devices,
The object of the invention is to provide hub cap-locking devices which are simple, economical to manufacture, and efficient in operation.
Another object of my invention is to provide a locking device for a hub cap which is housed within the nut and so mounted that no openings are, left through which dirt and moisture can get into the interior of the hub.
Another object of this invention is to provide a hub cap-locking device which is so constructed that the latch will be automatically retracted when the hub-cap is screwed into place by hand. i
A further object of the" invention is to provide means for locking the detachable wheel upon its carrying hub, the locking means being released by the application of a spanner or other suitable tool to release the clamping nut.
Further objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location, and relative arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown in the accompanying drawing, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is'a view in end elevation partly in section taken on the line 1, 1, Fig.2, and looking in the direction of the arrows of a hub structure embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2, 2, Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a broken detail view similar to Fig. 1 showing the locking means of a right hand wheel.

The same part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it appears throughout the several views.
In structures of vehicle wheels such as are employed extensively in connection with motor vehicles, and particularly with wheels of the wire spoke type it is desirable to provide means by which the wheel may be readily detachable and removable from its hub and quickly and easily applied thereto, and securely clamped in place in such man ner as to be locked in position when applied. It is also desirable to provide means to prevent the accidental disengagement or release of the locking means employed by reason of the backing off of the clamping nut usually employed i connection with locking devices, through jolts, shocks, or otherwise. It is also desirable to provide a hub structure for detachable or demountable wheels which is simple, economical to manufacture and efiicient in operation. It is among the special purposes of my present invention to provide a hub structure for detachable de mountable wheels which secures the advan-. tages and desirable characteristics referred to by means of the characteristic features of constructio as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawing Reference numeral 1 designates the outer shell which forms a part of the wheel proper. The hub cap 2 which in the form shown is preferably made in two pieces of pressed steel suitably secured together is provided with interior threads 3 adapted to screw on cooperating threads of the hub shell not shown, but which is well known in the art. The outer shell'l is flared outwardly at 4 to form a pocket 6 extending circumferentially around the hub cap 2 in which is located a stop plate 7 provided with teeth 8 which forms part of the locking mechanism. In the outer shell of the hub cap 2 is located a slot 9 at right 1 angles to the face of the hub cap. A brass safety latch 10 provided with a tooth 11 is located in this slot and is pivoted at the rear end of said slot or at a point farthest from the face of the hub'cap as'indicated at outer surface of the hub cap and out of en-.
12. At the front of the latch is a lug extension 13 which is rounded to receive the wrench pin as will be more fully hereinafter explained. The hub cap is provided with two holes 17 and 18to receive the wrench pins 28 of the wrench 29. A rounded spring 30 is secured to the latch 10 and is anchored in the hub cap to normally force the same outwardly from the center of the hub cap so that the tooth 11 is projecting into the pocket 6 formed by the outer shell 1 to thereby engage teeth 8 of the stop plate 7. When the pin 28 of the wrench 29 enters the hole 17 it engages the projection 13 of the latch 10 causing same to rock about its pivot 12 thereby bringing the projecting portion 11 of the latch 10 flush with the gaging relation with the stop plate 7 thus permitting the cap to be removed as will be readily understood. lVhen the wrench is removedit is obvious that the spring 30 will again force the latch into its locking position as shown in Fig. 2. As stated I prefer to'make this latch of brass, and the advantages secured by this structure are apparent, When the latch is seated in the slot in its locking position it ca not be injured by pressure on the stop plate teeth as the sides of the slot tend to hold it in position, and the pressure on the latch is transmitted to the side of the slot rather than against the pivot pin of the latch. It is apparent with this structure that the wrench is not needed in starting the cap on the hub as the top ofthe latch is depressed by engaging with the edge of the opening on the outer hub shell asthe hub cap is turned on. ,It will also be seen that I provide in this structure a surface contact between the safety latch and the teeth of the stop plate as distinguished from the line contact where the pivotal movement of the safety latch relative to the stop plate'is in a plane parallel to the end surface of the hub cap.
It will be noted that the hub cap, 2, is sopositioned with respect to the hub, 1, that the convex end face, 4, of the hub forms substantially a continuous surface with the end face of the hub cap. In other words, the end face of the hub cap is substantially flush with the end face of the hub. Whenever, in this specification or claims, I use the term flush with reference to the'relative positions of two surfaces, I mean that said surfaces are so positioned relative to each other as to form, in appearance, .a substantially continuous surface, as, for instance, in this embodiment, the convex end face of the hub cap, 2, forms, in appearance a substantially continuous surface with the end face, 4, of the hub 1.
Having now set forth the object and nature of my invention and having shown and described a structure embodying the charat its acteristic features thereof, what I claim as new and useful and of my own invention,

In a device of the class described, the combination of inner and outer hubs, said outer hub being removably mounted on said inner'hub, a hub cap screwed on one ofsaid hubs and engaging the other to hold the two hubs together, the side wall of said hub having a slot formed therein, a latch pivotally mounted in said hub cap and swingin in a plane radial to the axis thereof, said latch being pivoted to said hub cap at its forward end and having a tongue projecting through said slot and a cam surface, a keeper member mounted on one of Said hubs in line with saidtongue, the face of said cap being provided with a hole in line with said cam surface and adapted to accommodate means for engaging said surface to rock said latch on its pivot.
3. Ina device of the class described, the combination of an inner hub, an outer hub removably mounted thereon, a hub cap detachably and removably mounted onone of said hubs and engaging the otherhub to hold said hubs together, said hub cap having a slot formed in the side wall thereof, a latch pivoted at its forward end in said hub cap and having a cam surface at its rear end, said latch swinging in a plane radial to the axis of said hub cap and having a tongue projecting from its central part through said slot, a keeper member on one of said hubs in line with said tongue, and means adapted for rocking said latch.

In a device of the class described, the combination of an inner hub, an outer hub removably mounted thereon, a hub cap screwed on one of said hubs and engaging the other to hold the two in engagement, said hub cap having a slot in its side wall lying in a plane radial to the axis thereof, a latch housed in said hub cap and pivoted at its forward end thereto, said latch having a tongue extending through the slot in said side wall and a laterally extending arm rear end, provided with a cam surface adapted to be engaged by a wrench applied to rotate the hub cap, and a keeper member mounted on one of said hubs in'line with said tongue.
'5. In a device of the class described, the combination of an inner hub, an outer hub removably mounted thereon, a hub cap screwed on one of said hubs and engaging the other to hold the two in engagement, said hub cap having a slot in its side wall lying in a'plane radial to'the' axis thereof, a latch pivotally mounted in said hub cap at its forward -endand having a tongue extending through the slot of said hub cap,
and a laterally extendin arinhaving a cam pivoted at its forward end in said hub cap and swinging in said radial plane, said latch having a tongue extending through said slot and a keeper member mounted on said outer hub in line with said tongue.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of an inner hub, an outer hub removably mounted thereon, a hub cap formed of two telescoping sleeves, the forward ends of said sleeves being secured together and the rear parts thereof being spaced apart to form a chamber between the two sleeves, said inner sleeve being screwed on the inner hub and said outer sleeve having a bearing against the outer hub to removably hold the same in place on the inner hub, and a latch disposed in the chamber between said sleeves and cooperating with a keeper on said outer hub to lock said hub cap against rotation onsaid inner hub.

In a hub structure, the combination with a hub shell and an outer shell, of a hub cap adapted to fit on the hub shell to hold said outer shell thereon, and provided with a slot therein at right angles to the plane of the face of said cap, a stop plate" carried by said outer shell to extend circum-V v ferentially around said cap in the plane of the forward end of said slot, a latch pivotally mounted at its end in the-rear end, of said slot, and provided with a portion adapted to extend out of said slot into engaging relation with said stop plate, and an angularly projecting portion at its free ,end, said cap being provided with apair of holes,

In a device of the class described, the combination with an outer hub and an inner hub, of a hub cap formed of two telescoping cup-shaped members secured together at their bottoms, said inner cup shaped memher being ,threaded to screw on the inner hub and said outer cup-shaped member bear- I the outer hub to removably hold ing against said outer cup-shaped member it in place,

11. In a device of the class described, the
combination of an inner hub, an outer hub removably mounted thereon, a hub cap detachably mounted on one of saidhubs and engaging the other hub to hold said hubs together, said hub cap having a slot formed in the side wall thereof, a latch pivoted at its forward end in-said hub cap and swinging in a plane radial to the axis of said hub. cap, said latch having a portion projecting through said slot, a keeper member on one of said hubs in lin with said portion, and means for rocking said latch.
12. In combination with the hub of a wire wheel, a cap for said hub with its face substantially flush with the end face of the hub, alocking device carried by said cap and accessible at its face and housed by said hub, and meansfor normally holding the locking device in looking position, said locking device being such as to enable it to be operation of the wheel by centrifugal force.
