Specification offLetters Patent. Pii'migil Soph 20, 192i',
Application filed .Tune 12, 192)a Serial No. 388,627.
To all w fiom t m olz/ cancelar f Be it known that DEAN illumini CAnLsoN, a citizen oi' the United States, and residing at li'ianette, in the county of Kitsap and State of lVashington, has invented certain new and useful improvements in iliutomatic Switches, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in electrical Switches of the type generally known as plug switches adapted for frictional engagement with terminals' of; a circuit, as in an electric iron or the like.
The present invention is directed particularly Yto providing a switch of this type, wherein means are arranged for automatically opening the circuit under a predeterniined heat condition, in order to protect the utensil being heated. The particular switch to be described and claimed is specilieilly constructed With a view of providing for convenient renewal of the fuse member, when replacement is required.
In the drawings* Fignre l is a View showing the improved switch in section, and connected to the ter ininais of an electric iron. A
Fig. 2 is ay section on line 2-2 of Fig, l.
lille improved switch comprises a casing;r l of insulating material, formed usual with. the independent interior channels 9. and 3 conxmunicatingi with an opening si through the endof the easing through which the conductors 5 'find 3 enter the casing. The opening` 4 is enlarged at its inner end and provides a' shoulder 7, and the usual 'flexible metallic cablel covering the wires is enlarged at l) to fit in said. enlargement Y, to thereby hold the saine with relation to 'the easing at all times.
@ne of the conductors 5 leads to a split socket' l() seated in the open end of one of the casing channels ns 2-, the other conductor il leading! to a contact il removably secured 4 3 as by a screw lil. The contact l1 has a lateral projection i3 adapted to seat in a recess 14 in the wall of the casing dividing the channels 2 and 3, to there@ hold said contact 11. with a projeetion l5 in line with the channel and presenting:D1 a square bearing face 16 tansverse the channel. A socket piece 17 is arranged in the terminal oi the channel 2 and is formed near one end with a lateral projection 18 adapted to seat 1n a recess 19 in the .Wall ol` the channel. rlibe socket l? is longitudinally split at 2O ior the greater portion of its lengtln. the natural resiliency of the socket holding it locked in the channell through cooperation of the projcctionl and recess l), the split formation permitting suflicient relative movement between the split section to disengage the lock when it is desired to inove the socket.
The socket l? terminates in a reduce niember il in line with the nieinber of the contact 1l, and interpimed between these members is a ifuse including' a cylindrical section more or less snugly tilting the channel 3 and having vits end Walls prvjivided with contact tern'iinals :2&5 connectell by a fusible strip 2i.
From the construction it is apparent that the fuse constitutes a line connection in conductor S, and that the fusible element will, under the predetermined degree oi 'heat interrupt or brealr said connection.
'W hen it is necessary to introduce a new fuse the old usehand the socket .member 17 may be readily removed, the nen.v fuse inserted, and the socket member replaced. The improved switch is here shown applied to the heatingr circuit terminals 25, :2G of an electric iron though it is obvious that any appropriate terminals maT be engaged, the sockets being interiorly i'ornied lo coope ate with the particular terminals.
l. A plug,I switch including a casing; having spaced terminal receiving channels, a contact ineniber arranged .in one of said clnlnnels andy held against inoveincnh a socket member removably secured in said channel, and a fuse strip arranged in said channel and bearing between the socket member and contact member.
A switch including a casilinj`r a fuse carn rier l'lidably fitted in the casing, a Contact member removably secured wit-hin the casing and. adapted to be engaged by the fuse carrier, and a socket member slidably nlonnted in the casing and formed for locking" cooperation vwith the casing', said socket niember when in' locked position conlining the nsccarrier between. the Contact member and the end oi such socket member.
3. A casing divided longitudinally to forni channels. a contact member remov'abl);r lined in a predetermined position in one oi said channels, a socket member .slidable in said 5 :ge :L lmtch in the CaSigf-Wa to ok h@ f kei member in the channl, mul a fuse carsidaohfitting in Said channel and held by the socket member when in baked posi iO-g1 o maintain electrical continuity be- 'wsn said Contact member and socket memv n testimony whereof afix my sglmilu m the presence of awo witnesses.
