Description

L. BEAULIEN.
Washing-Machines.
FG' isglo' Patented May 20, 1873' VVITNESSES. INVENTOH.
i MMM/wf@ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI BEAULIEN, OF WOONSOGKEQ RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,107, dated May 20, 1873; application led April 29, 1873.
reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to thel letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing isa representation oi' a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is'y a sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to washing-machines; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement, in a semi-cylindrical or curved-bottom tub, of the different semicylindrical washers or rubbers, independently piv oted to the walls of the tub and to arms projecting into the tub, and operated by levers connected by pitmen with cranks of the operating-shaft, having such angular relation to each other that the movements of the washers will be made in different times, or successively, thereby avoiding the crowding of the goods at one end of the tub.
In the accompanyin gdrawin g, theletterAindicates the tub ofthe washing-machine, provided with suitable standards B and the side arms C. This tub is, preferably, semi-cylindrical in form, and has a double wall formed by securing the sheet of zinc a to the edges of the side pieces D and to the outside of the boards E, and a sheet of corrugated or luted zinc, F, to the inside of said boards E. From the end to which the arms O are secured the boards G project into the tub and partly across the same, and are slotted vertically, as at b, to serve as journal-seats for the journals of the rubbers.
To the upper edges of one or more of these arms, and to one or both walls ofthe tub, are
pivoted the bridges c. oi' the arms or boards G are illustrated, forming, with the side walls of the tub, bearings for the journals of three independent washers, H.. Each of these washers consists of two semicircular cheeks, d, connected by a number of rounded slats or bars, e, and a center board, g, through which passes the upright bar h, which is stepped in the central rubbingbar e at one end, and at the other or upper end is pivoted to the pitman k, by which it is connected .with its independent crank Z of the crank-shaft z. 'Ihe crankshaft is journaled in suitable seats in the arms G, and its cranks are arranged in angular relation to each other, so that the rubbers or washers H will be moved backand forth in different times in the tub, thereby avoiding the banking or packing of the goods being washed in one place.
I/Vhen it-is desired to remove the goods from the tub the washers are raised and the bridges c are thrown transversely underneath to support the Washers above the goods and out of the tub.
Metallic bands a are used to bind the lower zinc bottom a iirmly to the end boards E ot' the frame.y
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a tub having the inner arms G parallel with its side walls, of the independently-journaled washers H, levers l1, pitman k, and crank-shaft z, having several cranks, Z, one for each washer, arranged in angular relation to each other, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claimy the above I have hereunto'subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: LEVI BEAULIEN.
EDWARD BEAULIEN, GEORGE A. WILBUR.
