CIGARETTE HOLDER.

PATENT OFFICE.
CHIQAGO, ILLINOIS.
CIGARETTE-HOLDER. v
' Application filed. June as,
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, DAVID PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigarette-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cigar and cigarette holders, and has for its objects the provision of a holder into which the article may be readily and quickly inserted and lightly but securely held without danger of injuring the paper or wrapper, and which is so light in weight that it may be left upon the cigar or cigarette while the cigar or cigarette is held or supported between the lips of the smoker without the additional weight being perceived. Another object is the provision of a holder that is made of asingle or integral piece of material and so formed that it may be readily latched or released with one hand, if desired, and whereby a spring loops is provided for clamping the cigarette. By closing the spring loop the holder will readily conform to the shape or. size of the cigarette-by reason of the interposition of the'comparatively long standard and arm between. the holding portion and the latch, and will lightly compress the filling material so that'the loose ends will be prevented from working out of the end of the cigarette into the smokers mouth. Also, I have provided the spring loop with a flattened or weakened portion rendering the same more flexible to avoid rupturing the wrapper and permitting the more complete conformation to the cross-sectional contour of the cigarette. Other objects will be ap" parent a ter a more complete understanding of my invention'is had, and I prefer to carry outthese diversobjects in substantially the manner hereinafter fully described, and 'as particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings that form a portion of this specification which, in a sense, are merely diagrammatic for the purpose of illustration.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder showing the'sa'me in use with a cigarette. 4
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the holder showing the arms latched,
ig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 showing specification. Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 20, 1921.
1920. Serial No. 392,255.
the arms released for the insertion of a cigarette.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental view slightly. enlarged of the upper or looped portion of the holder. j,
Similar reference characters are employed to designate the same parts throughout the view of the drawings, and by referring to the latter it will be seen I form my improved "holder of a single or integral piece of wire of either round or 'fiattened cross-section, one end whereof is bent into a circular or ring-shaped finger grasp or handle 1 by which the device may be easily grasped between two of the smokers fingers. From the handle 1 the remaining portion extends outwardly or upwardly in a radial direction to provide a standard 2 that is substantially straight (see Fig. 3), and at its outer or upper end the standard is shaped into a single loop 3 that is closed at its outer segment, as shown, and is preferably elliptical in outline.
After forming loop 3, the wire is continued downwardly into another straight piece or arm 4, corresponding substantially.
with standard 2 and at its inner or lower end is bent around and laterally into a small hook or latch element 5. Th plane of the body of hook 5 is preferably slightly oblique to the plane of the holder structure,
- so that an entrance or mouth to loop 3 is provided between the adjacent portions of standard 2 and. element or arm 4 and the and when in position, shown in Fig. 3, this cigarette is guided between the sides of this month into the loop after which arm 4 is moved back toward and past standard 2 so that the latch 5 may engage the'latter,
and thus hold or "clamp the cigarette in the loop. For the purpose of rendering this loop more flexible, besides provldin standard 2 and arm 4, which give considerable flexibility, I have also reduced the thickness ofthe wire, as at 6, by flattening it or otherwise which permits the loop to engage the cigarette and 'more readily conform to the shape thereof.
I am aware that holders have heretofore been made wherein the loop is open at its outer portion and is adapted to be constricted into a gripping position by a movable or slide ring, but my structure has a much more resilient and secure grasp and is. free from the liabilit of rupturing the paper or wrapper of t e cigarette or cigar with the outwardly opening ends of the loop.
What'I claim new 1s: v a 1. A cigarette holder comprising an elongated piece of metal bent ntermediate its ends to provide a resilient loop to receive the cigarette, the portions of the metal extending from the loop forming respectively a standard providing means wherebg' the de-' an arm vice may be held by the smoker, an having a latch element whereby the same may be engaged with the standard to retain the article in the loop.
2. Acigarette holder comprising an elongated piece of-metal bent lntermediate its ends to provide a resilient loop to receive the cigarette, the metal forming the loop having flattened areas to increase the resiliency of the loop, the portions of the metal extending from the loop forming respectivel a standard providing means whereby
