GUILD-MEASURING INSTRUMENT.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUS K. Snails, a citizen of the United States, residing at California, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in an An lar- Measuring Instrument, ofwhich the followin is a specification.
The ob ect of the invention is to provide an instrument particularly adapted for the lay out of bolt holes in flan s and other round work. To this end t e instrument comprises two beams one of which carries a rotractor and the other a pointer, the two eing pivotally connected at a point concentric with the protractor. The pivot bolt of the two beams is provided with means for positioning it one. spotted center of the work and the centers of the desired holes laid out by means of the two beams after they have been properly positioned with respect to each other by means of the protractor.
Aside from providing for angular measuring, the device is adapted for scribing circles on the circumference on which the angular measurements may be made for the proper positioning of the center of the holes to be drilled or bored.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, durable and effective in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other and further objects appear in the following description wherein the invention is set forth in detail.
To the exact construction in which it is set forth, the invention is not to be re-' stricted. The right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes or alterations are compatible in s irit with the annexed claims.

As shown the invention comprises a pair of beams 1 and 2 both of which are formed Specification of mm Patent- Patented Sept. 13, 1921. Application fled July 14,

with one tapering end as indicated at 3. The beam 2 at the end opposite the tapered end 3 is formed with a lateral projecting semlcircular portion 4 on one face of which and adjacent the edge suitable divisions 5 are made dividing the peripheral edge of the portion 4 into degrees and fractions of degrees as indicated. The beam 2 from the semicircular portion to the tapered end 3 is on one ed e divided up into linear units as indicated by the divisions 6.
The beam 1 is designed for pivotal connection with the beam 2 and to this end there is provided a bolt 7 formed preferably with a square head 8 from the face of which opposite the screw, there projects a pointed conical member 9. The bolt 7 passes through the beam 2 at a point concentric with the circular edge of the semicircular portion 4. This bolt also passes loosely through the beam 1, a washer 10 being place over the bolt and on top of the beam 1 and a thumb nut 11 being thereafter at tached to the bolt and serving to force the Washer 10 down against the beam so that when set with reference to the beam 2, it may be rigidly held in such position. The beam 1 at the and remote from the tapered end 3 is formed with a pointer 12 reading over the scale 5 of the protractor.
A hollow tubular slide 13 is provided for attachment either to the beam 1 or to the beam 2, being shown secured to the latter in the present instance. This slide attached to either beam stands in surrounding relation to the same and once set in a desired position, is held in place by means of a set screw 14 having a knurled head by means of which it ma be turned for seating against the beam. he slide on one end of the face opposite throu h which the set screw passes, is formed wit a scribin pin 15 for the purpose of scribing arcs 0%0110185 and making other marks necessary in use of the invention.
The device is articularly adapted for 1a ing out bolt ho es in flanges and the like. Tli e center of the flange is first located, whereupon the conical member 9 is positioned above the center, the two beams being set the desired angular distances from each other as indicated on the scale 5 by the pointer 12. The tightening of the wing nut 11 holds these two beams in their desired relative positions and radial lines may thereafter be marked off by means of the two beams, these lines being the desired angular distances a art for the location of the bolt holes. Previous to making these radial lines, however, itis preferable that a circle be first drawn around the face of the flange the desired distance in from the periphery thereof. The points where these radial lines cross the circle are the points Where the bolt holes are located and may be accordingly spotted and drilled.
Accompanying the device there may be a scale indicating the number of degrees apart which the beams 1 and 2 are to be set to secure the desired number of holes for any flange on a round piece of work with which the device is used.
The beam 1 is divided in the direction of its length in the linear units by means of the scale 16, just as is the beam 2. The slide 13 may therefore be set any desired distance from the pivot points of the device which is the axis of the bolt 7 and when the conical member 9 of the device is positioned on the desired center, the scriber 15 of the slide may be employed for making the desired are or circle, the device in this manner performin the functions of a compass.

The invention having been described, what is claimed as new anduseful is:
1. An instrument of the kind described names:
comprising a pair of beams one of which is formed with a protractor element and the other with a pointer movable over the scale of the protractor, a bolt securing the two beams together at a point concentric with the arc of the protractor, whereby the two beams may be set any desired angular distances apart as indicated by the pointer and the protractor, and a movable slide attach; able to either beam and formed with a scribing point.
2. An instrument of the kind described comprising a pair of beams one of which is formed with a protractor and the other of which is formed with a pointer reading over the scale of the protractor, a pivot bolt connecting the beams together at a point concentric with the protractor, the said bolt being formed with a. conical portion for positioning the center of the device on a center from which measurements are to 'be made, a wing nut engageable with the said bolt, whereby the two beams may be moved with respect to each other to attain a desired angular distance between them and thereafter locked in position to retain this setting, and a slide attachable to either beam and having means for lockin it in position on the beam on which it is p aced, the slide being formed with a scribing point for the purpose specified.
