Description

H. K. POWERS.
COMBINED ANTISEPTIC CASE AND SURGICAL KNIFE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 4, 1920.

HENRY K. POWERS, OF NEW KENSINGTON; PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED ANTISI BPTIC CASE AND SURGICAL KNIFE.
Specification of Letters lPatent. Patented Sept, 13 192 1 Application filed September 4, 1920. Serial No. 408,290.
To all to 1mm, it may concern. y y lie it known that I, HENRY K. Pownns, a citizen of the United States. residin at NewKensington; "in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lombined Antiseptic Cases and Surgical Knives, of which the following is i a specification. reference being bad therein to the :u-companying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements .in combined antiseptic case and surgical knife, and the object of which is to provide an antiseptic containingcase and a knife blade with a head and screw-threaded projections at opposite sides of the head, whereby the knife blade when not in use is immersed in an antiseptic liquid within the case and can be removed therefrom and the case used as a handle for the blade combined with means tor making a liquid-tightjoint when the knite is within the case and is removed from the case, and also the provision of means for protecting the outer screw-threaded projection when the blade is within the case.
In the accompanying drawing-- Figure l is a side elevation of my novel antiseptic case and surgical knife, the knife attached to the case leak-tight and ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section through the case showing the knife within the case and immersed in an antiseptic liquid and closing; the case leak-tight and a protecting cap for the outer screw-threaded projection.
F ig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of Fig. 1 on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. i is a detached perspective view of the case with the knife-bladc removed.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the knife blade removed from the case and detached therefrom.
F ig. 6 is a detached perspective View of the internal screw-threaded cap.
In carrying out my present improvement I provide a hollow case 1, having a closed end 2. and its opposite end provided with a threaded plug having an internally screw-threaded and longitudinal opening 4. This hollow case is substantially filled with any desired antiseptic liquid 5.
An elongated surgical knife blade 6 i is provided, and this will be made of any de* sired crosssectional shape and any desired end of the hollow case length. The butt end oi the bladetl is provided with a head 7, which has a cross-sectional contour corrcsponding to that of the hollow case 1. The inner end oi? this head I provided with an inuuirdly extending pr'oj -u tion 8, of a (.lian eter greater than the width oi the blade (5, and the outer end of the head 7 has an outwardly extending external screw-threaded projection 9 ol the same diameter and the same thread as the projection 8. A protecting cap 10 has an internally screw-threaded opening 1]., adapted to screw upon and protect the outwardly extending screw-projection 9 when the knife is not in use and within the hollow case 1.
A washer 12 is located at the inner end of the head 7, and a washer 13 is located at the outer end of the said head. The washer 12 serves to make a leak-tight joint between the inner end of the head 7 and the adj acent 1, when the knife blade is not in use and within the case 1., while the washer 13, serves to make a leaktight joint between the outer end of the head 7 and the adjacent end of the case 1, when the knife blade is removed from the case and attached to its end for use.
Bv means of an instrument of this construction a physician or surgeon can conveniently carry in his vest pocket a surgical. knife blade which is automatically made antiseptic and which can be removed from the case without touchino the blade and attached to the case for immediate use, and after the use can be placed in the case and in each instance a leak-tight joint is effected between the head 7 and the adjacent end of the liquid containing case 1.
The externally threaded projections 8 and 11 are of a size and of a thread pitch to fit the opening 4:, so that the foregoing operation of the parts is readily accomplished. \Vith an instrument of this construction, it is very little longer than the case when the knife blade is not in use and the screwthreads on the projection 9 are protected against damage by the short cap 10.
The case 1, head 7 and projections 8 and 9 may be made of any desired material, but vulcanized rubber would probably be found to be the most suitable. Likewise the knifeblade 6 can be made of any suitablematerial and of a desired length and of a desired cross-sectional shape, the limitation in this last respect being that the cross-sectional width of the blade must not exceed that of the projection 8.
. Having thus described inyrinvention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Acombin'ed antiseptic case and surgiail knife, comprising a, case containing anti- 2. A combined antiseptic case and surgical knife, comprising a flat sided case having an integral bottom and top, a case containing antiseptic liquid. one end of the case having an internally screw threaded opening, a blade having at its butt end a head, the head having inwardly and outwardly extending externally screw threaded projections, the blade smaller in cross sectional area than the head, washers around the screw threaded projections at the opposite ends of the head, and a short cap adapted to receive the outer screw threaded projection, the parts combined and operating for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature.
