Application filed January 10, 1921. Serial No. 436,178.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM S. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county ofISt. Louis and btate of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spotlight-Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to auxiliary lights for automobiles and has special reference to what is commonly known as a spot light.
The principal object is to produce a novel form of mounting for such a light, which is exceptionally simple and convenient of operation.
Another object is to provide a novel means of holding the spot light in any desired position.
Still other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the further description thereof.
'Referring to the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a spot light embodying the present. invention and illustrating it as attached to an upright portion of the automobile;
Fig. 2' is a sectional view on the line 2-2, F ig. 3, looking outwardly in respect to the automobile; and
Fig. 3 is a combination vertical section and side elevation of the spot light showing a modified form of manipulating means.
1 represents an upright portion of an automobile as for example a portion of the dash board or the wind shield, as the case may be. In the member 1 is formed an opening 2 in which the support of the light is mounted, this support comprising two preferably circular disks 3 and 4:, each being provided with a like central opening or hole about which are formed outwardly projecting raceways 5 and in which raceways, intermediate of the disks when spaced apart as for example when attached to the member 1 as closures on either side of the opening 2, is held the hollow ball 6. The disks 3 and 4 are held tightly against the member 1 by suitable through bolts 7, and, in the upper portion of the disk 4 is a partially cut out portion 8, that'is the port-ion 8 is severed from the adjacent portions of the disk for a distance outwardly from the opening in which the ball is mounted and thus becomes yieldable independently of the remainderof the disk, and throughthis cut out portion and the opposite disk 3 is installed a screw threaded bolt 9 upon the end of which, inwardly in respect tothe member 1, is mounted a wing nut 10. This novel feature is for the purpose of providing simple means for holding the ball in any predetermined position and also to steady the action of the ball when being adjusted as well as to prevent rattling of the attachment.
Diametrically through the ball 6 is installed the light supporting tubular spindle 11 which may be made of two sections, if desired, each section screwed into the ball from opposite sides, or of a single continued piece of tubi-ng,'as shown in Fig. 3. The spot light 12 is attached in any desired manner to the outerend of the spindle 11, and, upon the inner end of the spindle is attached the means for manual manipulation of the light, which, as shown in Fig. 1, is an adjustable hollow handle 13, having a cut out portion 14 adjacent the end which is attached to the spindle 11, and through this end of the handle 13 are formed two longitudinal elongated slots 15 opposite each other, there being a transversely disposed pin 16 through the spindle 11 adjacent the end thereof and which pin protrudes on either side into the slots 15 acting as a cooperative holding means for the handle. By this attachment the latter may he. slipped up on the spindle 11 and the latter universally adjusted, while, when not in use, it may be drawn back toward the operator and allowed to depend in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. a
The wire connections for the lamp may enter the spindle 11 at any place desired intermediate of the handle connection therewith, as shown at 17 in the drawings.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of handle which comprises a simple knob 18 rigidly fixed to the inner end of the spindle, said knob having a centrally disposed push button 19 therein, as is common in similar devices.
From the foregoing it is evident that I have devised a simple universally adjustable ball and socket support for the spot light which is particularly well adapted for use for those engaged as linemen in electrical in- Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a spot light of the character described, mounted upon a spindle within a rotatable ball held intermediate of two clamping members for frictionally engaging ;same, a separately adjustable portion of one of said clamping members engaging the ball, means for manually adjusting said portion for rigidly holding the ball in any predetermined position, a transversely disposed shaft through the innermost end of the spindle, an adjustable handle mounted upon the innermost end of the spindle for adjusting same and having elongated slots through the sides thereof in which said shaft is engaged-and a cutaway portion in the innermost end wall of the handle whereby the same may be allowed to depend therefrom or be slipped over and onto the end of the spindle for adjusting the light when the independently adjustable means for holding the li ht in fixed position is released.
2. l n combination a spot light of the character described mounted upon a spindle within a rotatable ball, an upright support having an opening therein in which the ball is mounted, two spaced clamping members surrounding the ball, attached to the support and forming a closure to either side of the opening therein, a separately adjustable portion in one of said clamping members engaging th ball, and a handle on the spindle for adjusting the spot light.
