SAFETY DEVICE FOR ELEVATORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, Enos J. FETTINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Branch, in the county of Gibson and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Elevators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety mechanism for elevators and has for its primary object to provide simple substantial means operated upon the breakage of an elevator rope, to clamp the elevator to its guides, thereby preventing the elevator from dropping to the elevator pit.
An object of the invention is to provide means so constructed that the efliective grip thereof for holding an elevator will increase in proportion to the increase in load.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view of a coal type of elevator showing my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the mechanism removed from the elevator.
Fig. 3 is a section view showing the catches in one position.
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the catches in another position.
Fig. 5 is a detail view.
Again referring to the drawing illustrating one manner in which the invention may be constructed, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary coal elevator, the rope 2 of which is connected to an operating lever 3 pivoted to the frame as illustrated at 4. One end of this lever has suspended therefrom a weight 5 while the other end is pivotally connected to a link 6, which in turn is connected to a pivot lever 7. The lever? is connected by link 8 to another lever 9 acted upon by weight 10. This lever 9 has a pivotal connection 11 with a slide 12. The slide 12 is connected to a pair of catches 13 and 14 mounted for sliding movement within a block 15, which moves parallel to and embraces an elevator guide 16 which is provided with notches 17. Each block 15 is provided with cam surfaces 18 adapted to force the teeth of the catches into engagement with. the notches of the guide when the catches are moved over the cam surfaces.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that upon the rope 2 breaking the weight 5 will move the lever 3 in a direction to. operate the link mechanism, which in turn moves the slide 12 in a direction to force the catches over the cam surfaces.
Attention is called to the fact that when the teeth 19 engage the notches the weight of the elevator through the action of the cam surfaces will forcibly hold the catches in engagement with the guides.
It is of course to be understood that the elements which form the invention may be constructedin various other manners, and associated in other relations, and therefore I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
What I claim is A safety device for elevators comprising in combination with a notched elevator guide, an elongated channel-shaped slide block embracing and slidable upon the guide, spaced notched catches located within the channel-shaped slide block and capable of independent sliding movement therein, notches formed in one face of the catches for engagement with the notches of the guide, means located upon the outside of the slide block and connecting the catches, means connecting the catch connecting means with the elevator rope for holding the catches against movement and out of engagement with the guide and cam surfaces located'within the guide block in the path of movement of the catches when the latter is released by the breakage of the elevator rope to force said catches into engagement with the guide;
