UNITED STATES PATENT QFFHCE.
WILLIAM H. DILLET, 0F RALSTON, OKLAHOMA, ASSIGNOR- OF ONE-THIRD TO JAMES. M. HARP AND ONE-THIRD TO WILLIAM 'I. HARP, BOTH OF RALSTON, OKLAHOMA.
Application filed March 5, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLiAiu H. DILLET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ralston, in the county of Pawnee and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gate-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an end gate fastening device, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which eliminates the use of rods and wherein the gate can be readily detached from the wagon.
Another object is to provide a device of this character wherein the end gate is disposed between the sides of the vehicle body, and wherein means are disposed between the end of the gate and the body for detachably connecting the gate to the body. I
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a pair of standards supported by the wagon body and means carried by the end gate and disposed between the standards and the wagon body for detachably connecting the end gate to the body.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a vehicle showing the end gate applied and locked in position,
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a vehicle with the end gate removed,
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. A is a section taken on the line 4- 1; of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the gate.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a vehicle body such as a truck or wagon including sides 5 and 6 and a bottom 7 Disposed inwardly of the rear of the body A are supports 8 and 9, each support consisting of a plate 10 having a hook 11 projecting from the outer longitudinal edge of the plate adjacent the top of the plate. A lug 12 projects from the outer longitudinal edge of the plate beneath and in alinement with the hook 11, the lug 12 being provided with a slot 13, the purpose of which will be here- Specifieation of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 4%,629.
inafter described. T he longitudinal edge of the plate adjacent the upper face of .he lug 12 is cut away to permit ready application of the end gate. The upper portion of the plate 10 adjacent the inner portion of the hook 11 is cut away to provide a sloping shoulder 14 which terminates adjacent the recess of the hook.
In applying the parts, a spacing plate 15 of any suitable material is disposed between the inner face of the side of the body and the supporting plates so as to hold the hooks 11 and lugs 12 in spaced parallel relation to the inner surface of said sides, the plate 15 terminating inwardly of the outer longitudinal edge of the plate 10 so as not to interfere with the application of the end gate. By this means, the plate 15 cooperates with the plate 10 and the side of the body to provide a groove inwardly of the end of the body. Extending transversely of the vehicle body adjacent the rear end thereof is a brace 16 having a flange 17 projecting cownwardly and inwardly of the body from the inner longitudinal edges of the brace, a slot 18 be ing provided in the upper portion of each of the plates 8 and 9 for the reception of the end portions of the flange.
The end gate 19 is adapted to be disposed inwardly of the rear end of the be: y of the wagon, the length of said gate being less than the width of the wagon body so that the ends 20 terminate in spaced parallel relation to the inner surface of the sides 5 and 6. Carried by each of the end portions of the gate is a holding member 21, the length of said holding member corresponding-to the width of the gate. Each of said holding members consists of a plate 22 adapted to be secured to the outer surface of the end portions of the gate.
The outer longitudinal portion of each plate is extended from the intermediate portion of the plate in angular relation to provide a flange 23. The plate 22 is intended to be secured to the end gate in such a manner that the flange 23 will be disposed in spaced parallel relation to the end of the gate so as to form a channel 24. An opening 25 is provided at the upper portion of the plate adjacent the junction of the flange with the plate, While a similar opening 26 is provided at the lower end portion of the plate. The opening 25 is smaller than the opening 26, the opening 26 corresponding to the size of the lug 12, while the opening 25 is intended to receive the bill of the book 11, the upper wal of the opening 25 being adapted to en gage the bottom of the hook 11 to prevent disengagement of the gate. The upper portion of each of the plates 22 is provided with a recess 27 adapted to receive the upper portion of the plate 10 adjacent the shoulder 1; when the gate is being applied. A latch 28 is provided, for each of the holding members 21, said latch includinga locking bolt member 29 and a handle 30. An openis formed in the locking bolt portion 21") and is adapted to receive a pivot pin 81 carried by the plate 22 adjacent the opening 26. A spring 32 is disposed between the plate and the head of the pin so as to constantly urge the latch into engagement with the outer suriace of the plate 22.
In applying the gate, the. outer portions sition, so as to permit said gate to be swung.
into a vertical position, whereupon the lugs 12 will pass through the openings 2G. The latches 28 are then swung toward the sides of the vehicle body and into the recesses 13 of the lugs 12 so tiat through the cooperation of the hooks l1 and the latches 28 the gate is prevented from accidental disengagement from the vehicle body.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention providesa novel fasteningdevice for end gates wherein the entire fastening mechanism is disposed substantially between the ends of the gate and the sides of the vehicle body. Another important'feature of the device is that the hooks l1 serve as pivot means for the gate when it is beingapplied and removed in addition to preventing disengagement of the gate when thelatches 28 are applied to the lugs 12, and as the flanges 23 of the plates 22 are disposed between the plates 10 and the sides of the, vehicle body, they cooperate with the. plates l0'to properly brace the sides of the vehicle body when the sides are under pressure from a load within the vehicle body.
lVhat is claimed is: v 1. An end gate fastening device comprisinga standard "carried by each side of a vehicle body and supported in spaced relation to said side, each standard having hook members xtending in spaced relation to each other, an end gate disposed between the standards, a holding member carried by each end of the gate, said members being disposed between a portion of the standards and the sides of the vehicle body and hzwingopenings for the reception of the hook memhers,.and; fastening means carried by the holding members for engagement with the hook members.
ing supporting members secured to a vehicle body, ach supporting member having a hook projecting fromthe upper portions thereof, and a lug projecting from its lower portion, said hook and lug being substantially in alinement, an end gate'having holding members disposedin spaced relation to the ends of said end gate, said holding members having openings for. the reception ofwthe hooks and lugs, the hooks of said supporting members being adapted to engage the holding members, and fastening means carried by the holding members for engagement with the lugs of the supporting members.
In testimony whereofl hereunto aflix my signature. r
