UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY W. WILLIAMS, GRINNELL, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILER ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138.974, dated May 13, 1873; application filed October 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. WILLIAMS, of Grinnell, in the county of Powesheik and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in an Attachment for Wash- Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a bottom view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
' This invention has relation to a falsebottcm to be placed in wash-boilers, and it consists in constructing a false bottom, with an upper plate having an opening in the center traversed by metal bars, which prevent the clothes from falling through; also with a lower plate to cause the water to boil up at the sides, and to be drawn down by the vacuum created in the center of the washer; and also with ridges or guards on the bottom of said lower plate, to prevent the water from passing around the washer; all substantially as hereinafter described.
The principal objection to a false bottom is, that the bottom parts are open by apertures in such a manner that the water boils up in the center as well as around the sides of the boiler; but by the plan adopted, as herein described, the water is continually forced up at the sides only, thus creating a vacuum in the center, and causing the water to be drawn down, thereby more thoroughly cleansing the clothes.
Referring to the drawing, A designates an oval concave plate, having an oval opening, B, in the center, across which rest plates 0, designed to prevent the clothes from falling through. D designates a lower plate attached to the upper plate by posts or otherwise, al-
lowing about three-quarters of an inch space between the two plates for the water to pass through easily. The water when boiling is forced up at the sides of the plate, and is drawn down by the vacuum created at the centre, sent hollow partitions and supports running lengthwise and transversely, as shown, under the plate 1), to which they are attached, and which when on duty rest on the bottom of the boiler. They are intended to serve as supports for the attachment, and also as partitions to prevent the water from flowing around it, to the end that such water shall be forced to flow directly inward as far as practicable between the upper and lower plates. 1 also leave the ends of these hollow partitions open to allow the water to circulate therein freely.
1 am aware that devices somewhat similar to mine have been in use especially that wash-boiler attachments having cross-bars for holding the soiled garments, and a perforated plate thereunder, are not new. I therefore do not claim such devices;
ut I
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The wash-boiler attachment herein described, having plates A. and 1) connected, as described, together with the aperture B, guards U, and supporting partitions D, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY WARREN WILLIAMS.
