Be it known that I, CLARENCE LE ROY PARKS, a citizen of the Unitedv States, and resident of the city of Seattle, county of King, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photoprinting-Boxes, of which the followin is a specification.
y invention relates to photograph printing boxes of that class wherein artificial light is employed to make prints from roll or pack films; the principal objecteof the. invention being to provide a device of this character whereby printing may be done in a rapid' and expeditious manner and prints and negatives may be released from printing positionv and discharged separately to provide an easy separation.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a numbering .mechanism that will operate `in conjunction 'with the printing mechanism 4so that each print will, at the ntime of printing, be given a number which may be made to correspond to 'a number given a printing order so as to provide commercial printers with 'an easy means of identifying work from different customers.
In accomplishing these objects I have provided improved deta'ils of construction, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a pers ective view of a photograph printing mac ine constructed accordig. 2 is arvertical section of the same particularly illustrating the platen operat-v ing mechanism. Specification of Letters Patent.

properly through the glass to effect the printing; the lamps being electrically connected with a source of electricity, as will presently be described, so that light is furnished at the proper timer by certain operations of the mechanism.4
Hingedly attached to the cover 10 above the opening llvis a film holding clamp 4 comprising relatively long and short legs 10mm, respectively, which are` hinged at their .upper ends in such a manner that the leg 40 extends along one side and adjacent the edge of the` printing opening, while the leg 4l terminates adjacent the upper edge and at the opposite side of the opening. The twov legs are connected by a transverse bar 42 which serves, with the lower portion of the leg 40, as means for holding a film, which may be placed thereunder, in proper position for printing.
When a film is placed in the machine for printing its upper and one side edge are held beneath the matted edges of the clamp 4 byV the weight of these members, and when printing is finished the film is released by a slight raising of the clamp and it slides from osition so that another film may be inserted before the clamp is lowered.
Raising through mechanism which is connected wlth of the clamp members is donea knee 'lever 6 that is pivotally fixed at one side of and adjacent the front of the table in such position that it may be actuated outwardly against the pressure of a spring 61 to draw on a cable 62 which is extended over suitable rollers 63 to the outer end of a lever 64 which is pivotally suspended from the under side of cover 10. The inner end of the lever supports a post 65 which extends through the cover 10 and engages the under side of the clamp leg 40 in such a manner that, through the mechanism just described, actuation of the knee lever will raise the clamp sufficiently to release a film held thereby and permit the insertion of a new film.
lVhen the film has been placed properly beneath the clamp member and the plate 5 has been adjusted to a position to give the print a desired margin, the print, or sensitized paper is placed thereon; the latter being placed closely within the angle of the leg 40 and bar 42. The means for holding the paper in this position before the platen is lowered comprises a small leaf or finger 7 mounted on a short rocker shaft 70 that extends through the leg 40and at its outer end has a crank arm 71, to which is attached a tension spring 72 which acts to hold the leaf against the paper. The leaf is set within a notch in the cross bar 42 so thatv it will not interfere with movement of the platen to and from position. y Y
Pivotally mounted on a cross rod 73 which extends between the legs 40-41 of the clamp member are the ends of straps 8 which carry a platen 8O that may be moved to compress the paper and film against the glass and after each printing operation automatically moves to open position.
The means for operating the platen consists of a foot levery 81 that is pivotally supported from its forward end and at its vfree end has a cable 82 attached 'thereto which extends over a roller 84 fixed to the lower corner of the box 1 and rollers 85 mounted between spaced standards fixed at the rear of the table, and at its end is attached to a link 86 which comprises the outer end of a series ofk links whereby the platen is moved to closed position. The link 86 being pivotally fixed at its lower end between the standards and at its upper end is hingedly connected by a. short link 87 with a lever 88, mounted on a block 89 which is hingedly Vconnected through avshort link 83 with the platen. It will be seen by referring to Fig. 2 that by applying pressure on the foot lever 81 the v link 86 will be carried upwardly at its free end'fand through the lever 88, an'd short links 87 and 83 will move the platen on its mountings to its closed position. Y Fixed on the upper side of the platen is a V upwardly curved and rearwardly extending Hnger 74, which is adapted, when the platen nears its complete open position, to engage .the box. ydoor 15 which is normally'held in open posithe central crank portionA 7 6 of a cross shaft mounted between the legs 40-41 of the clamp 4, so that the said shaft will be rocked in such a manner that a crank arm 77 at its outer end will be carried rearwardly and, through a link 78 which connects the arm '77 and the arm 71 of the shaft 70, will similarly revolve the latter vshaft to raise the print holding finger 7 to open position. It being apparent that with this connection the finger will release a print as the platen moves to open position and will close when the platen has moved but a short distance toward closing position which enables the operator to place the print and remove his hand before the platen closes thereover.

lVhat I claim as my invention is:
l. A photograph printing machine coniprising a supporting table having anopening in its top and a print receiving conipartnient below said opening, a door for said compartment adapted to close said opening and means for holding said door normally in open position, a lamp box mounted on said table provided with an inclined cover, film and print holding clamps mounted on said cover, means for releasing the print holding clamp to deliverl prints into said compartment and means for simultaneously releasing the film clamp and closing said compartment door.
2. A photograph printing machine comprising a supporting table having an opening in its top and a print receiving compartment below said opening, a door for said opening and means for holding said door normally in open position, a lamp box mounted on said table provided with an inclined cover having an opening therein, a translucent plate for said cover opening, a film holding clamp mounted adjacent said cover opening, a print holding member on said clamp, a platen and mechanism for operating the same toward and from said.

3. A photograph printing machine of the character described comprising a printing box provided with an inclined cover having an opening therein, a translucent plate for said opening, a hingedly mounted platen..
adapted to move toward and from said opening and mechanism for operating the same comprising a lever pivotally supported between its ends from the box`cover, a relatively short link hingedly connected at its ends to the platen and outer end of said lever, a second lever having a pivotally fixed end and a movable end, a. second link hingedly connecting the movable end ot' the second-lever with the inner end of' the first named lever and a cable fixed -to the second lever to swing the same on its pivotal mounting vto rock the first lever on its mounting and thereby aetuate the'platen toward said opening.

A photograph printing machine of the character described comprising a printing box provided with an inclined cover having an opening therein, a translucent plate for said opening, a hingedly mounted platen adapted to move toward and from said opening and mechanism for operating the same comprising a lever pivotally supported between the ends from the box cover, a relatively short link hingedly connected at its ends to the platen and outer end of said lever, a second lever having a pivotally fixed end and a movable" end, a second link hingedly connecting the movable end of the second lever with the inner end of' the first named lever and a cablel fixed at one end to the second lever and atits opposite end to a foot lever and operating over guide rollers to draw upwardly on the second lever -as said foot lever is depressed to move the y platen to a closed position, and a spring attached to the first-named lever and to saidV a printing paper over said film, a platen movable toward and from said opening, and a type carrying member yieldably mounted in' said 'platen and lmovable therewith for the purpose set forth.
