Description

- UNITED STATES PATENTOFFICE-v IIIACII J. FOWLER, or IioANoKE, VIRGINIA.
LocoMo'rIvE SANDER'A'ITAGHMENT.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, yMACK J. FoWLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Roanoke. and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locomotive Sander Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sanding devices especially designed for use upon locomotives, an object of the invention being to provide a novel form of nozzle for discharging the sand, wherein the amount of said supplied to the rails may be regulated as required.
Another object is the provisionof a nozzle for the above purpose in which the discharge opening may be kept free from obstruction so as to insure proper operation at all times.
. With theabove and other objects in view, the invention `furtherincludes the following novel features and details of construction., to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed Vout in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure l is a fragmentary sectional view of a portion. of a locomotive Vsanding apparatus showing the improved nozzle.
Fig. 2 is a detail vertical sectional view.
Fig. 3 vis a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a supply pipe which has one end connected to a suitable container, such as the sand dome 11 of a locomotive.
The opposite end of the pipe 10 is detachably connected to the improved nozzle, the latter being indicated at 12. This nozzle is shown as substantially L-shaped and in.- cludes a vertical arm 13 and a horizontal arm 14:, the former communicating with the pipe 10 so that the sand will. be deposited into the bore 15 of the arm 13. The arm 12 is provided with passages 16 and'17, the inner ends of which are spaced apart and communicate with the bore 15. The passages 16 and 17 are of different diameters and their outer ends merge into a common discharge passage 18, which communicates with the pipe 19 for the discharge ofthe sand. An additional passage 20 has its inner end in communication with the'discharge Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Allg'. 23, 1921. Application mea April 2s, 1921. s,
passage 18, while its outer end has secured therein one end of a pipe 21 which communicates with a suitable air supply.
Extending within the bore 15 are air nozzles 22 and 23, the former being of greater size than the latter land being positioned in a line with the inner end of the passage 16, but spaced therefrom. The nozzle 13 is positioned in aline with the inner end of the passage 17 which is relatively. close to the said passage. The nozzles 22'and 23 are removably secured in nipples 24, which are detachably connected to the 'arm 13, while supply pipes 25 are also connected to the nipples 24 to provide-means for supplying air to the nozzles 22 and 23. A plug 26 is removably positioned within the bottom of the bore 15 to provide means for cleaning-.the latter.
In supplying sand to car rails, it is necessary to supply a proper amount under different conditions, to :obtain a proper traction. When the locomotive starts, a relatively` when the locomotive is under way this amount should be reduced, as it not only wastes the same through an over supply, but the said over supply acts to retard in some large 'quantity of sand must be supplied, but i measure the movement of the locomotive. v
This, the present form of nozzle overcomes.
In the operation of the invention air is supplied to the nozzle under pressure and may be controlled by any desired means, for example, by means of a three-.way air valve (not shown). This valve upon its initial opening supplies air through the pipe 21 and the passage 2O and serves to force out any obstruction within the discharge end of the Y nozzle and to keep the same thoroughly clean for the free passage of the sand. A further movement of the valve would then supply air to either the nozzle 22 or 23 as desired so as to force the sand which lies within the bottom of the bore 15 through either of the passages 16 or 17. As the distance between th-e inner end of the passage 17 and the nozzle 13 isrelatively small, only asmall quantity of sand islocated before the passage 17, so that for this reason andv due to the rstricted diameter of the said passage 17, a relatively small quantity of sand will be ejected. The amount of sand between the of the passage 16 and the size of the said passage permits an increased quantity of sand to pass through the nozzle When the air is directed therethrough.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make suchV changes as properly :tall Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention What lis claimed is 1. The combination with a sanding apparatus, of a discharge nozzle comprising a substantially L-shap'ed member including a vertical leg and a horizontal leg and adapted for connection with a sand supply, channels provided in the horizontal leg, said channels being spaced apart at their inner ends and having their outer ends communieating with a common outlet and ,air nozzles extending Within the vertical arm of the L-shapedmember and arranged to discharge air into the inner ends of each of the channels.
2. The combinationwvith a sanding apparatus, of a discharge nozzle vcomprising a substantially L-shaped member includinga vertical leg and a horizontal leg adapted for connection With a sand supply, channels cic different diameters provided in the horizontal leg, said channels being spaced apart at their inner ends and` havingV their outer ends communicating With va commony outlet and air nozzles .of relatively diilerent sizes extending Within the vertical arm of 3. The combination with a sanding apparatus, of Va' discharge nozzle comprising a substantially L-shaped member including a vertical leg and a horizontal leg adapted for connection With a sand supply, channels of different diameters provided in the horizon- 'tal' leg, said4 channels being spaced apart at their inner ends and having their outer ends communicating with a common outlet and air nozzles of relatively different sizes eX- tending Within the vertical arm of vthe L- shaped member and vspaced relatively different from the inner ends of the channels to discharge air into the latter.
4. :The combination Witha 'sanding appara'tus, of a discharge nozzle comprising a substantially Lshaped member includingr a vertical leg and a horizontal leg and adapted for connection -vvith a sand supply, channels provided in the horizontal leg, said channels being spaced apart atitheir inner ends and having their outer ends communicating With the common outlet, air nozzles extending Within the vertical arm of the Leshaped memberV and arranged todischarge air into the inner ends of `each of the channels and.
